Message From Ed

Hi Everyone!

Ed is locked out of his account (crazy, right?) but wanted to pass along this message to you all:

Dear Forumites,

I just wanted to drop by with a message. We both really understand your frustration and sadness around the end of this version of the forum. A new album is upcoming and we have decided to create a new website for this grand occasion. Tom And I were not really aware that a forum in its current form was unsustainable for various reasons...hence the slightly confused reaction on Twitter.

We both really appreciate the lively discourse here about all things Chemical. I've been particularly moved by the friendships, meetings and night outs that have been inspired by this space. Our music is about bringing people together so this has been wonderful to see.

We will miss this space just like you and it is a shame with new material and shows arriving sooner than later that we wont be able to check in and see what you all make of it. I know that our web designer and technical gurus are working with some of you to ensure that there is a space for you to continue your dialogue.

Warm Regards to all of you and thank you for such passion, it means so much to us..I think you will love the new music...

Ideas And Suggestions For A New Forum

Hey chemical sisters and brothers,

Since Whitenoise has already come up with some great points and Whirls invited us to do some brainstorming and discuss suggestions for a new type of forum, let's focus and pool all our ideas in one thread.

whirlygirl, on 17 April 2015 - 2:00 AM, said:

Hey kids!!

OK, here's the deal. All is not lost. But to be clear - The way the forum is now and the way the website is now is a hot mess, and will not work going forward. We all know how outdated and buggy the forum is in its current state (so imagine the cluster on the backend too).

Solutions and ideas are being sought. KEEP THE IDEAS AND SOLUTIONS COMING! And real world feedback. It's very important and the bit about the off topic reddit dealie and its limitations are something that wasn't considered but now is, thanks to this thread. I also threw out there the idea of a sort of "official unofficial" type fan forum, based off the solution in the other thread. So please, keep hope alive and throw out ideas that would bring this community into the modern age.

WhiteNoise, on 17 April 2015 - 3:24 AM, said:

In summary because I got really rambly:

1. Feel free to cut any complicated forum features, if a simpler forum means less upkeep. It just has to work, we don't need fancy things like fonts or file upload. At bare minimum, all we need is the ability to post, edit, and reply, and of course our post counts.

2. Feel free to unload upkeep responsibilities onto the community. If we're going to have to build our own forum, we'll know how to run it, and if we're provided with a new forum, documentation and training can guide us, and you won't need a paid staff constantly on hand. We're here 24/7 - let the residents help keep the house from falling apart!

3. If you're looking to modernize, let people log in with their Facebook accounts. Lots of popular sites have FB account integration. A like feature for posts would be cool. Also, official updates on Facebook/Twitter could automatically be made new forum topics, and the Facebook/Twitter post can link to the associated forum topics so new users can jump in.

Full post:

1. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that if the forum needs to be streamlined and simplified so it's easier to upkeep on the administration side, it would be 100% worth it. At least half the features of this forum don't get used. File attachment is useless, I don't think anyone has touched their bloated about-me pages since 2012 (especially the statuses!), the search function is pretty limited (I for one google "site:forum.thechemicalbrothers.com [search term]" when I'm looking for something), and I'm sure many of us could even go without embedded media (youtube/soundcloud) if need be. Heck, many of us handled a forum that didn't even have editing for 8 years! We can do it again. Forums don't need to be feature-rich, we don't need font effects or smilies, so whatever makes it easier to upkeep, the better.

2. If even a streamlined forum will be too much to upkeep, consider this: Many of us are here on a daily basis, and could easily take on moderator and even sys-admin responsibilities. There's really no sense in having a large paid staff on hand constantly, when us forumites can spot and fight spam faster than the 3ev team did. Besides, there's Kosek, Ben_j, Krisper and I who all know a thing or two about websites. With proper training we could casually but consistently assist with the responsibilities of whatever invisible system administration is going on in the background of the forum. The "official unofficial" forum idea would be a fully fledged example of this. With the control entirely in our hands I don't doubt we'd do a clean job running things, as users, and as the people who built the forum from scratch/kit. All we'd need is a link or endorsement from the official site itself to keep the traffic coming in and the forum relevant to new users (it will always be relevant to us, that needs not be said!)

But I think the best set up (in the "official/unofficial" genre) is a joint partnership - you guys provide the server/hosting space and forum as a part of the new official Chems site, and we handle the day to day upkeep of the forum on our own. So it's an "unofficial" fan forum hosted on the real site. Basically, you guys set the forum up, then 'hand the keys' over to us. Or if that's too much to ask to make a new forum, give us the responsibility of programming / setting up the new one. If possible, we could try to fix this forum, gut all the features and problems from it as most of it still works. I might be naive as to how much work that'd take, but it's an idea. In any case I'd be absolutely happy to work with the powers at be to keep the forum in line with their vision for it.

This isn't an attempt for me to amass internet power or whatever as a mod - it's been said that being a mod is like being a janitor, if you enjoy your job you're not doing it right - but as a devoted fan I'd be happy to assist in running the official Chems forums, free of charge. I doubt I'm the only one, especially if it means the difference between a forum and none at all!

3. As far as modernizing the forums, if there were some way for users to log-in with Facebook accounts that would make for an awesome convenience. Connect via Facebook, and new users could ask questions and participate without having to make a proper forum account. A like system for posts would also be really welcomed. You could also enable Facebook announcements to automatically be posted as new topics, and link to them in the FB post, so that Facebook users can jump right into the discussion instead of just commenting on Facebook. I am trying to think of some way to integrate Twitter but it's so far removed from the forum format I can't think of any good ideas. I have more ideas but they have more to do with how the new forum would be organized and set up, they depend on confirming that we having a forum at all.

If I Started A New Forum Would Anyone Use It?

*** UPDATE ***

I'm going to tentatively go forward with this whole fan forum idea here. The project will start slow at first since the future is still murky (and could result in not needing a new forum), and I'm still finishing up classes. But the plan is to have something for everyone by the time the first new show happens in June!

Explud, can you email me at c h o n e g g e @ p u r d u e . e d u ? (remove the spaces of course)

Ben_j, Krisper, Whirly, can you email me too at the above address? I want to CC you on this since I know y'all will be able to help here and there as well. No obligations, just eavesdrop at the very least.

Literally anyone else who wants to chip in or just listen to how the projects going, feel free to email me! I'll throw you in. Anything from design/photoshop skills to IT and web administration will be a huge, huge help. Even memes to keep the spirits up.

At some point I will make a mailing list to inform you of when the new forum goes up, regardless of where we are. If this does not happen, I'm 80% sure the forum will be at www.thechembase.com, so check there if we don't get each other's contact info.

***

I'm absolutely willing to put the effort and time in, but if it's just me and Csar discussing the decline of communication in social media, I'll just email him

What do you all think?

I've already archived all significant user's post counts and join dates (if your post count is over a certain count and you've logged in since 2010, or if you've been active recently). So no matter what our high scores won't be lost. There's about 110 of us btw.

All Good Things Must Come To An End

Hi Everyone,

Long time, no post. Well, I did chime in the other day but that's beside the point.

There are indeed plans to update the site in anticipation of the upcoming album. Most likely the site will go down for a bit (there will probably be a 'coming soon' type landing page) while the new site is being developed.

However it should be known that the forum is not a part of those plans. This type of platform is antiquated, cumbersome, the farthest thing from mobile friendly, and as long as we're being real here - the decision to call for its end has has been a long time coming. And soon - I'm not exactly sure when - our little corner of the universe will unceremoniously cease to exist.

So what to do?

Some of us have our little group on Facebook, and there's another larger group on there as well. But as those groups tend to be exclusionary (and not everyone particularly enjoys Facebook) that's not the way forward in carrying on our discussions and love of all things Chemical, and Chemical related things (or loosely related things, like bullshit chat)

The most viable option at this point to carry on our discussion would be reddit. There is already a sub-reddit for the Chemical Brothers r/chemicalbrothers - though I don't know if there will be an "official" one made. Will keep you posted.

The nice thing about reddit is we can be ourselves, yet still maintain the anonymity we have here with our usernames n'all. We can participate without having to post, we can upvote, downvote.

Anyway brothers and sisters, please feel free to cry, vent, share ideas, have group hugs, etc, etc.

Love is all, til the end of ends.

Hello Brothers and Sisters.

If you didn't see anything for the film "It Follows" that came out Friday, no fret. I didn't know it existed till I went to the art house movie theater and had to ask if the line around the block was for "What We Do in the Shadows", so I could politely turn around and return home. Turns out, it was for this awesome looking horror movie that is apparently the best thing to happen to horror since "Cabin in the Woods", which I absolutely love.

Ah yes... and the soundtrack is quite excellent and there are parts that remind me of the Hanna soundtrack.

Amon Tobin - Dark Jovian

A new Amon Tobin is coming for record store day. Dark Jovian will be a limited 2 x 12", which means it will be at least 4 tracks, but it's not clear whether it's a whole new album, an EP or something else like a compilation of other tracks with a new one...

Amon Tobin apparently teased that record on twitter last month, posting anagrams of "Dark Jovian" :
"Vodka in jar"
"Kid jar nova"
"Java or kind"
"Void ark Jan"

Once again Record Store Day brings goodness :D

EDIT: it will be 5 new tracks with 3 reworks from other artists
I am looking for more fan-made, extended mixes while we wait for a long EBW 11 to be released. CB music is simply best when it is allowed to take at least 10 minutes. Enjoy listening and let me know what you think of the songs/this project!
So, it begins !

What's your bet on which track it will be ? I reckon it's one of the tracks they played in their sets, since I don't see them releasing an EBW without testing it before.

I'm not gonna front, I actually credit the Chems for helping me discover other indie acts as a result of either their remixes or collaborations.

Got into New Order (yes, it was Out Of Control that got me into them), Primal Scream, Beth Orton, The Charlatans, Mercury Rev, Spiritualized, Manic Street Preachers, and Midlake as a result. Ironically enough, I had no idea Midlake was a local band (since I used to attend University of North Texas in Denton during my undergrad and currently work in Dallas) until AFTER their collaboration on The Pills Won't Help You Now.

Still find it crazy that a local act was able to collaborate on the track with the act that ultimately got me into electronic music.

Don't Fight Control

(I did a site search but couldn't find anything. Apologies if this has been discussed before.)

So this mash up of Don't Fight It Feel It and Out Of Control keeps popping up in Chems DJ sets. Presumably it was put together by the Chems themselves. Apparently it's been around for years as it has a vinyl release date of October 2007 on Discogs.
Although the 2007 version isn't the same as the one T&E are currently playing out, it sounds professional enough (to me) to have been an earlier version of what they're playing now. If the current version was put together by the brothers, does that mean this white label was quietly released by the bothers too?
Re: the current version of the track, this appears to be it on Soundcloud. Where did this guy get this? Have y'all got this version?
I'm liking the addition of Denise Johnson's "Rama-lama's" and the sound effects from Like A Motorway. Definitely better than the '07 version. How do I get it?

New Years Eve 2011 - Lamacq Live At Heaveny Social

Hey there.

So remember on New Years Eve in 2001 when Radio 1 broadcast The Chems DJing at The Heavenly Social?

Yeah. The internet doesn't seem to remember either.
Apart from this place nowhere seems to have any idea that it happened.

But it did. I recorded it on cassette. And listened to it to the point of physical disintegration.
Now I'm trying to piece together all the music from the show.

It's a long shot but does anyone have a full tracklist for the 3 sets?
Scratch Perverts played first (Plus One to be accurate) then FC Kahuna then The Chemical Brothers.

I'm actually looking for the Scratch Perverts set mostly (as the Chems set was very similar to In Glint and I have the absolute best song that FC Kahuna played).

I know they/he played the J Majik version of Spaced Invader by Hatiras. Along with a version of Ante Up (Remix) by MOP.
The track I'm really keen to find though is a magical version of the Aquasky vs. Masterblaster remix of Lord of the Null Lines by Hyper on Experience. The standard AvsMB remix has the same sounds and samples in but is way different.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And anyone who owns a decent recording of it and would like to share can have all of my monies.

Hey everyone. Some of you (who may be lurking) have reached out for help with account access - password and login page not working, captchka resetting etc. My guess is the forum is glitchy which, well, isn't surprising. ;) As for admin power I'm limited and not sure how to solve the issues with account access. I apologize for that. I will research a bit more and see if there's anything I can do but fear unintentionally banning or deleting accounts and posts right along with it. Last resort, I will try reaching out to other sources to see if the login issues can be resolved.

Hopefully with a new album underway means a fresh new 'do for the website and the way we communicate with each other.

Best Live Shows 2014

What were your favourite live shows of 2014 ?

Mine were :

1. Portishead (Rock en Seine festival, Paris)
Hands down one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Beth's voice was perfect, the band was perfect, just perfect. And this video still gives me shivers :

2. The Prodigy (Rock en Seine festival, Paris)
They delivered as usual. Full on energy for an hour and a half

3. Bonobo (Les Folies Bergeres, Paris)
If you've never seen Bonobo live and you have the occasion, just go ! The guy does his albums all by himself, but he tours with a dozen (very talented) musicians, and the rendition of his music is incredible !

Hey Boy Hey Girl V I Sit On Acid

Disclaimer (or something): I searched the forum for Lords of Acid / I Sit On Acid before starting this thread. Couldn't find anything. If it's been discussed before...sorry!

So, I've been catching up on series 1 of the BBC's The Wrong Mans this week. It's quite entertaining as um, comedy-thrillers go.
I noticed that Emilia Fox was part of the cast, and had a quick Google to remind myself which CBs vid she was in. (I know I could have used this forum but...I didn't).

I (wrongly) ended up on the Wikipedia page for HBHG where I spotted something interesting down the bottom. An allegation of plagiarism: In an interview with BELPOP, Lords of Acid founder Praga Khan confronted The Chemical Brothers backstage over the techno beat used in "Hey Boy Hey Girl" that is identical to "I Sit On Acid 2000" released by Lords of Acid. Their response to the allegations was "Everyone steals from everyone."

There's also a link to the BELPOP interview video on youtube at the bottom of the Wikipedia page. I think it's in Flemish, so all I can understand is the bit about Mr Praga Khan meeting Mick Jagger. Can anyone else understand him? The "2000" at the end of I Sit On Acid's title interests me. You can probably guess why.

I was familiar with "I Sit On Acid" from "As Heard on Radio Soulwax pt 2". But that's a Soulwax remix anyway, and doesn't sound like HBHG. So I had a listen to "I Sit on Acid 2000" on youtube (splendid video!), and obviously there are huge similarities. But of course this track is dated after HBHG. So, I also had a listen to an instrumental of the original 1988 version here:

It sounds kinda messy but maybe there's something in it (I'm not very good at chord spotting but some of you might be). Thoughts anyone? Other than the obvious ones about the lyrics, that is!

Incidentally if I have learned nothing else from this uh "investigation", I have at least learned that the guy who made a cheesy old rave fave of mine, Injected With a Poison also made I Sit On Acid.
