So this topic is back eh? I guess the reason must be the increase in anticipation of the new album since the tom interview.
I pretty much said before that this new live tour needs to be changed significantly in terms of visual presentation and songs.
I know I might get criticised for this, but I think the last 'PTB' tour didn't have as strong impact as the live tours before. I think for a lot of people it just felt as a bit of a 'same old, same old'. And I think there were two reasons for this.
First, visually the tour looked like it took the step backwards - they just had bare equipement infront of a screen with two lasers (sometimes two smaller screens depending on space). Now this still looks amazing if you live in 1996, but in 2005/2006 it was nothing to write home about (every single dj has a screen and a bunch of lasers, even the one at your local pub).
Now, we know that Chems are basically just two guys messing with synths, mixers and drum machines, so the visual aspect is very important in order to elevate the live experience. Just look at the recent Daft Punk tour - now do you think people would be talking so much about it in amazement if they were just standing behind a dj desk with one screen behind them? - I don't think so either. I don't think Chems need to have some stupid pyramd (it doesn't suit them anyway), but I think a slight change and visual upgrade is due.
Secondly, when it comes to song playlist, the last tour felt like 'Surrender' tour with a few new songs put in, and the issue was that these new songs (galvanize, big jump, come inside, surface to air) just did not have a massive impact as the new songs in previous tours - except for maybe 'Believe'. As good as 'Push the Button' album was, it just didn't have that 'massive, oh my god I have to listen to this til' my finger bleeds from pressing play and neighbours die from heavy synth overdose' track. It didn't have that 'Leave Home', 'Block Rockin' Beats', 'Hey girl, Hey Boy', 'Star Guitar' moment.
So I think creating an excellent new album with a few visual upgrades is esential for success of the new live tour. I know that a lot of the people who saw them for the first time during the 'PTB' tour might not agree with me, but those poeple who saw Chems several times over several live tours will understand what I'm talking about.
Do not take this wrong, I still love Chems as I did the first day I heard them, and I can't wait to see them live again, I just want them to keep that 'wow' factor forever.
