I remember when the meltdown happened - how tragic it was and the horror the event left in its wake. I was around 14-15 when it happened, at an age where I was becoming more aware of current events and stuff - the most horrific were those news shows like 60 minutes that did specials on Chernobyl and seeing those orphaned children with deformities because of the radiation poisoning... :( I remember it so well, because in 1986, the US was still immersed in a Cold War and there was a lot of fear going around; lots of tv specials on nuclear war, lots of Soviet this-and-that in the local news. I also live about 25 miles or so north of a major nuclear reactor - so needless to say there was a lot of hypothetical reporting in the media and it was talked about a lot at school. It's enough to make anyone feel helpless.

The part that got me about this website was the old man who continues to live there, drinking milk from his cows and eating the food from his garden - he'd rather die at home than die in an unfamiliar place of homesickness. I think Elena is very brave for doing what she does. Carefree or not, she's doing her part to make sure that Chernobyl isn't forgotten.
be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle

I would have thought the radiation level would be, although not back to normal, at least safe to enter by now. Maybe not to live in, but to ride through, I wouldn't have thought it was too dangerous.

I'd leave a sample first though, not too sure the prospect of kids is on the table after that! It might be safe as in won't kill you, but what it does to fertility is anyone's guess!
