Actor Daniel Craig named as next James Bond, follows Pierce Brosnan in role JILL LAWLESS
Fri Oct 14,12:12 PM ET
LONDON (AP) - Blond. James Blond.
Daniel Craig, a 37-year-old, sandy-haired Englishman, was introduced Friday as the new James Bond, ending months of speculation. He'll star in Casino Royale, directed by Martin Campbell, due out next year. "I had a couple of martinis when I found out," said Craig, who replaces Pierce Brosnan in the role of the suave spy.
Craig is the first blond actor and only the second Englishman to star as Agent 007 in the movie series. His selection was revealed as he was whisked down the Thames River on Friday aboard a military boat to a waterside news conference.
"It is a huge iconic figure in movie history, and those things don't come along very often," Craig said.
Producer Michael G. Wilson said 200 actors had been considered for the role, but Craig was the only one who had been offered it. Craig said he only found out Monday that he definitely had the part.
Speculation about the new Bond had also included Clive Owen, Ioan Gruffudd, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Gerard Butler, Ewan McGregor, Colin Farrell, Hugh Jackman, Heath Ledger and Eric Bana.
At the packed press conference inside a Royal Navy facility on the Thames, the new Bond fielded questions from newspaper and television reporters, tabloid gossip columnists and a journalist from the Ministry of Defence magazine.
Craig brushed aside questions about supermodel Kate Moss and actress Sienna Miller - both tabloid fixtures whom he has reportedly dated.
"I'm not going to get into that," he said.
"I understand that doing this doesn't help" preserve his privacy, Craig added. "We'll take it one day at a time."
Of the other five actors to play 007, only Roger Moore is English-born. Sean Connery is Scottish, George Lazenby is Australian, Timothy Dalton was born in Wales and Brosnan is Irish.
Relatively unknown outside Britain, Craig appeared in the landmark 1990s British TV drama Our Friends in the North and in films including The Mother, Enduring Love and Layer Cake.
His screen credits also include Road to Perdition, Sylvia and this year's thriller The Jacket with Adrien Brody. He is now filming another thriller, The Visiting, with Nicole Kidman.
Ian Fleming's first-ever Bond novel, originally published in 1953, Casino Royale is one of the few Bond adventures not to feature the MI-6 gadget-maker Q. It was previously filmed as a 1967 spoof starring Peter Sellers.
Campbell - who directed Brosnan's first Bond film, GoldenEye, in 1995 - said the movie would be "tougher and grittier" than previous films, with "more character and less gadgets." He said the story would begin with Bond first becoming a "00" agent.
"It is really the arc in which he becomes Bond," Campbell said. "He starts out just having earned his double-0 stripes and comes out at the end the Bond we know and love."
"A lot of the embryonic Bond things will come out in the film - how he gets the Aston Martin, how he mixes a martini."
Casino Royale is due to begin filming in January in the Czech Republic, the Bahamas, Italy and at Pinewood Studios near London. Campbell said the budget will likely exceed $100 million US

No idea who he is, but finally they're gonna get this one under way. Was hoping for Jude Law or Clive Owen myself, but.....

I'm kind of old fashioned in that I like the Sean Connery and Roger Moore James Bond over Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan kind.
I used to watch them a lot when I was a kid, and I remember my best friend at the time and I went and saw The Living Daylights at the movies. It was a lot of fun, since it was Roger Moore's last hurrah the crowd were totally into it and Grace Jones made a great villian. They're good fun popcorn flicks. And you know... every woman secretly wishes she were a Bond girl. X-D
The ones in recent years I just can't get into. I think the last one I enjoyed was the flick with Timothy Dalton, Liscense to Kill - was good fun.
But that one with Madonna in it, Die Another Day, was horrible. Horrible, I say! And the theme song was crap, too.
So what's the deal with Aston Martin's - are they bringing them back into the films? I hope so, because those cars are plush and they are a character as much as the actors and actresses are. I mean, come on, the Aston Martin is synonymous with Bond, James Bond.

Daniel Craig? I'd have thought he'd look too old to play Bond just out of training! I thought they'd go for someone younger like Matthew Goode.
Wait a sec, the guy who directed Goldeneye is doing this? Could be great then. I hope at least that it's set around the 50's/60's like it should be!!! Just have to wait and see.

Going to be a heretic and say that Dalton is the best Bond, and The Living Daylights is the best Bond film. It was a return to form for the series after several goofy and characterless films. Serious plot and character driven story and my favourite of the Bond cars. Goldeneye is my second fave 007 film and so I have high hopes for Casino Royale, with Campbell directing.
I really like Brosnan as Bond, but Die Another Day was beyond dismal. The producers in particular lost the plot completely. A return to character over gadgets is well overdue.
(Think I might get the From Russia With Love game for PS2. Actually features Connery's voice as far as I know.)

I really like the old Bond movies with Sean Connery and Roger More. They're not like todays action movies, always bang bang boom! You know what i mean. Old Bond movies had humour and action on a good level.
I don't like any of the newer Bond movies exept Goldeney, wich was great.
The new Bond does'nt look like the old ones (i'm comparing to Sean Connery and Roger Moore) but as he is suposed to be a much younger Bond i guess he's allright... I'm looking forward to Casino Royale, I hope it won't be such a dissapointment as Die Another Day was.

anyone seen l4ayer cak3? or layer cake for you losers who havnt seen it.
No layer cakes for me.
That was a great film, totally unexpected... was not expecting how things happened. Which always makes for a great film when you're thrown for a loop like that.
And I dig how FC Kahuna, I think it was Hayling (?) was used at the beginning.
