Whats a sampler do?

Production-wise, it basically records snippets of audio which you can then play back whenever you want to. It used to be the primary tool of most breakbeat-style electronic music production. You use them to record drum hits, breaks, synth notes, orchestral samples, and whatever the hell else you feel like. You then assign the sample to a voice, edit it however you want with whatever the sampler offers (filters, effects, cutting, looping, ..etc)then sequence it to be played back whenever you need the sound. Some are all-in-one sample/sequencing deals, but many of the older kind can't sequence themselves. These days, the sampler has been, for the most part, replaced by the computer. I wouldn't recommend spending much on one.

Any "DJ-sampler", "phrase sampler", or whatever probably has absolute minimal editing/sequencing/production functionality with more emphasis on simply recording things and playing them back always with included looping tools and is probably better labeled a "looper". They look fun, but not very practical.

It's a nice read, but I wouldn't say it's helped me much at all. Oh well, it's probably still worth it.

On another note, I've got new vinyl coming in today or tomorrow! I'm excited!

:D

@Foxboy: What style of music do you plan to mix?

All kinds of crap. Im pretty undecided. Electronica if that makes any sense? Some techno/house/dnb/hip hop/turntablism/acid - it just depends what mood im in.

cmon get something from the 80s!
He put on a turn-down collar, a black bow, and wore his Sunday tail-coat. As such, he looked spruce, and what his clothes would not do, his instinct for making the most of his good looks would.

Hey all - I have been looking around for advice on where to get myself a decent set up and was talking to a guy i know who is a local DJ here in N.Ire. [www.jordanx.com] and he told me to get CDJS but I was still on the look out for a set of Technics. He came back to me later on in the week offering me a set of technics for 300 and was willing to throw in a pair of orthofon needles and a 4channel mixer too for 350. He said he didn't use them anymore and wanted rid of them. I was really excited about it, I don't know much about it like but I think that is an amazing deal. Only thing is I've no money and he's looking to get rid of them ASAP - My birthday is this Sunday and I'm going to try and pull together some money tap my folks for some extra funding to get them cause I think for that amount of money it would not only be good value but a good start too.

What do you guys think?

2007 Winter NAMM Show: Korg announced its latest software synthesizer offering, the Legacy Collection - Analog Edition 2007. It pairs the “MS-20″ and “Polysix” soft synths from the original Legacy Collection with a newly created version of the classic “Mono/Poly.” The Legacy Cell software synthesizer plus MS-20FX and MDE-X effect plug-ins are also included.

Each soft synth utilizes Korg’s proprietary CMT (Component Modeling Technology) to perfectly reproduce the sound and response of the original. CMT also reproduces the character and response curve of each parameter, for results that are completely faithful to the original model.

Yay ! Mono/poly in da computer

good work foxlad.

things to look at for:

turn the deck on and make sure the pitches are at zero. look at the light coming out from under the on/off knob. see where the circles are moving round on the platter? if they are set up/pitched corectly the circles should be still. if they are moving at all, it means they arent pitched correctly. the faster they are moving the bigger the correction is needed. this sort of thing can be fixed/tuned so dont panic if they are moving slightly, but use it to bargain the price down (though to be fair its fairly cheap already)

make sure the weights arent screwed right down - i hate it when peopel have there decks set up like this - it wears your records out and sounds rubbish.

centre the pitch and have a record playing. move the pitch off the zero so the green zero light goes off. if u hear a large jump in speed it prob means the pitch control is fairly knackered and may need replacing.

good luck and have fun! ::D
