that was actually pretty straight forward ;)
He put on a turn-down collar, a black bow, and wore his Sunday tail-coat. As such, he looked spruce, and what his clothes would not do, his instinct for making the most of his good looks would.

Thor_Saytyr Escribi:

im so glad they seem to have gotten the last big pay cheque out of the way with ptb and actually are starting to expand.

That's not a very logical statement. If the chems supposedly are after big cheques, why would they change a winning formula and expand? Or do you think the chems were really greedy right up until PTB but now have completely satisfied that desire?

like surrender, i hope this new record pisses alot off because its new and exciting and not what people WANT to expect from a chems record.

I think some of the fans are so grateful to the chems for their past achievements that they accept just about anything the chems offer today. The problem with this is that pleasing us fans is not a very motivating factor if the reaction is the same whether the chems spend months working on complex and subtle arrangements or whether they spend an hour lazily sampling a broken vacuum cleaner.

I think we have to be a bit more critical as a whole and be able to voice our concerns without getting a page full of disclaimers where n! fans say that they still like the new album despite a particular poster did not.

The new record might piss a lot of people off (and it is practically guaranteed to piss some people off, it always happens) but even if it does you still will not hear about it on these forums. Unless there is a surge of new people who register here just to complain. :-D

Why do people always talk about them making music as " I hope the fans will like it "

Offcourse the Chems make music that hopefully we will like - Offcourse they dont only make it for themselves - but lets see it from a different way - the selfish point of view in making music. They dont only make what pleases the fans - they make music that excites them , that they like , that they want to hear out in a club. The Chems might one day dissapoint us ( Wich is not really possible imo }:-) ) but they will always make music that they 100% love , that they think is great and that excites and moves them.

I'd rather have a record made by Tom and Ed that the fans dont really like BUT that they think is wicked and that they are proud off and that they have not one doubt about - than a record that the fans will love ( Or not the fans maybe but just people in general ) and that leaves them with a feeling off "I wish we wouldve done that and that differently"

Offcourse this doesn't apply to the here and now - i'm just saying "IF"

Tom and Ed have exactly the same taste as us - hence that we are such big fans of their work!

Even if they would make a record I dont like , i know Tom and Ed will ALWAYS make a record that comes straight from their heart and soul and they put so much emotions in it - that they can NEVER dissapoint me because a record is so much more than just "Music"

Just my two cents. Hope i made any sense ;)

I think you are actually right!

I started to think about what my motivation to make music really is and it is true, I started to really make "serious" tracks for selfish reasons. (When I noticed that nobody was offering me the sort of music that I really really really would like to hear.) What inspires me to make music is often just hearing a track that I find offensively bad and thinking that "this is no good, it could be so much better, I'll go and make it so".

But then again, I'm never totally happy about my own tracks. I think it has to do with being able to imagine better music that I can actually produce. And I think the same thing happens for a lot of people, maybe also for the chems. This is where the input of other people really helps.

When I'm producing stuff I'm always sort of naturally progressing towards something that I imagine to be really nice but at some point I hit this sort of wall where I can't progress much further. (Any step further seems to take exponential time.) Even just a little bit of relevant feedback here is enough to shake me off the track and give me a chance to go further on a different path and thus reaching further into what I'm imagining.

It's not that much about pleasing others but to sort of get perspective on how to do things differently.

(If the feedback is always the same it doesn't help a thing.)

the chems are popular and work under a large label. they must maintain a certain status quo to keep public and label bigwigs happy. they must keep a certain sound and style to there work so its noticable. face it, they have to keep making chemical music to stay where they are. to me ptb was the pinnical of that ideal to where they catered mostly to what is popular, to gain support, to re-establish that large base of newcomers. i do enjoi some trakcs from ptb very much, but most of it rubs me wrong.

ive come back because ebw8+9 sound awesome-o, and to push some buttons while im at it griping }:-)

i forgot how easy it was to get this board all RAWLED up and ready to go! full of chemical patriotism.

That's all fine and good, it's OK to get riled up - then there's discussion and debate which is good to keep the forums active. It's healthy, and we're up for a challenge - fandom and everything that goes along with it can't and should not be measured. We're here and we're fans, all in our own way even if we stray off the path every now and again. For the record I don't believe in the notion that there are levels of patriotism and allegiance to a band. ;) Either you like them a lot, you like them a little, you like them sometimes, you like them when the mood strikes you. Some of us are geeks, others are just passing by. If there music does something for you - then great!

Although there's a lot to be known and said about what the label expects from an artist, I've always gotten the impression that the Chems have a fair amount of freedom artistically. I think if they didn't have this freedom they would have either hopped labels or gone on to explore different things. We don't know the details of the Chemical Brothers' musical contract so it's hard to base assumptions on what the label expects. There's also different perspectives depending on where you're from. Come With Us didn't do so hot here in the States sales-wise. And also it's been noted by the Chems that that album was a result of making music based on fans' expectations. Whether the results were loosely or tightly based on those expectations is only for the Chems to know. To the best of my knowledge they never expanded too much on that aspect. What's done is done.

As for the rest, the Chemical Brothers are not above criticism. But admittedly it's hard for me not to be defensive even though logic tells me that music is subjective and everyone hears things differently. To be fair, there are some Chemical Brothers songs I don't care for (*gasp* hard to believe, I know). Or there's been times when songs have had to grow on me. I've been critical before, hurtful even, but it's pretty much water under the bridge at this point. Me not liking a song here and there is not enough to put me off the band. There's always the future.
be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle
