yeah, I'm really going for having a small amount of synths with huge capability, so like the ms2000br i got has made life great. It can make such twisted sounds. I had the microkorg, which is the same engine only a crap control and didn't really dig it... but now!

Anyway, back to the dx200, I way eyeing that cause vintagesynth was saying it was an easy-to-use alternative to synths like the dx7, which is a living hell. I guess what I am looking for, like i said with the ms2000br is really unlimited capabilities of creating new sounds.

Just bought a Korg polysix on ebay. Looking foward to getting it cause I was watching a youtube video and it looks great. I used to have a juno and was tempted to get another (there's a million around here!), but since I was so attached to my now dead mono/poly, thought that synth would be a good middle point of the two.

@ Biff, do you know much about FM synthesis?

It's an entirely different beast that typical subtractive...

Okay, so, as it turns out, I'm trading the mc-505 for an electribe es-1 mkii with some cash. In all honesty, I never really figure out how to use that thing. (I can't have people saying bad things about gear I haven't gotten rid of yet, though  )

The ES-1 is a weird one, effectively it's a drum sampler. I'm sure mips will be able to describe the difference better than me, but it can't pitch samples to make melodies (as I understand it). You have to multisample and then trigger the different samples. But it's got LOADS of effects on it

Actually, there are programs that will tweak the pitch shifting for you and effectively let you use it as a monosynth.

:)

Next friday I am going to embark on a long and expensive journey to build a modular synth composed primarily of Doepfer units, until I get cheap...

Good luck Biff ! What will you get first ? I guess oscillators, since you can't do any noise without that

yeah, that's the plan. Probably the power stuff first, then just down the chain of events/processes. Plus I was going to build the shelves since I have some great power tools, should be safe fun- haha. Hopefully I'll get the basics done by summers end. It works out better for my budget, I've found to buy a new piece every paycheck, rather than being in poor-ass broke for 2 weeks after a check when buying an entire synth that will be limited in ability. And like I was saying, I am going for open-ended machines regarding sounds and modulars are going to be the best answer. I'll keep pictures as it goes along...

yeah, I did a presentation on samplers, computer music, synths and all that stuff at school. The mellotron was the first sampler, it used magnetic bands of 8 seconds. Each key of the keyboard triggered one band.

yeah the mellotron uses tape loops. hence why they sound so wobbly and don't age that well.

they're recorded or 'sampled' sounds but as far as I know you couldn't record on to the mellotron and expand the sound set - could be wrong mind. the first sampler as we know was the fairlight I think..

the mellotron was used by the beatles a fair bit in later years. strawberry fields is a classic bit of mellotron action.

there's a decent vst emulation. the m-tron.

Hey Biff, any chance you'll hook us up with some samples once the project's a bit more underway? Which filter modules are you looking at? The Wasp Filter, Morphing Filter, and Triple Resonance all look awesome.

I was definitly eyeing that wasp filter, that thing really has some character I like. Probably aside from the power supply/bus that was the first thing I was going to get. Figure in the mean time I could run my ms-2000 through it until I get a vco. I'll definitly post samples here as it comes along

Hey guys. What do you think of a Behringer BCD2000? Is it worth it checking out?

I wanted to get one some time ago... It looks good, but I'd prefer 2 CDJ800s instead

2 CDJs are easier in terms of most venues will have them, so you only need to bring CDs with you. As opposed to laptop, MIDI controller and loads of cables.

The BCD is alright, but it's a bit lacking in some areas. I assume you're looking at it for DJing - Rich & I DJ using Ableton Live, and the controller we use is the UC-33, made by Evolution I believe. It's nice, loads of knobs & sliders on that one.
