cool, thanks. I'm going there (chester exactly) in 26 days for a business trip. I don't think I'll have much spare time at all but is there anything I definitely should've seen, anywhere I definitely should've been?
(ps. was in Buffalo last time which was quite disappointing so I am actually hoping it will be much better in Philly)

Cool. You live in Germany near the French border? Is it beautiful out there? Okay, I'm not going to lie here. Sadly, some of my friends around the country jokingly call Philadelphia "Filth-a-delphia"; that being said, Chester is the un-bathed relative we hide in the closet when neighbors are coming over.
All joking aside, Chester is about 25 miles south of Philadelphia. It is mostly a ghetto that is trying to rebuild itself with the assistance of Widener University, a relatively new Harrah's casino on the waterfront, and the beautiful new PPL Park, Philly's MLS soccer stadium. The season is just starting; by chance is your work involved with the Philadelphia Union? Whatever the case is, I give your company credit for working in an area that is making a serious effort to infuse itself with industry and climb out of a hole.
Other than the stadium, I don't know of anything else in Chester worth visiting. The casino is..well...a casino and the University is on the small and plain side (I worked there for a short time). Make sure you get to Philadelphia (it's better than Buffalo!). The most efficient to get to Philadelphia is on the Septa Regional Rail line. It goes directly into Center City (Philly). It's a 20-25 minute train ride at around $6 or $7 dollars one way. I've provided a link for your schedule and station; you will want the schedule for the Wilmington/Newark Line. Don't walk to or from this station by yourself at night. Seriously.

For Philly, I am very out of touch with the nightlife. I couldn't tell you where to go for a good club crowd or DJ. I'm sure this is what you really want to know. FAIL on my part. Philly's 'City Paper' usually is the best starting point to find what you're looking for.

If you're looking for a bar scene, you may want to hit South Street. About 20 years ago it was our little version of NY's SoHo; these days it is somewhat diluted by corporate America (thanks McDonalds and The Gap), but it can still be an interesting slice of Philadelphia. Oh yeah, Fluid nightclub is up that way too. As I recall it's pretty okay depending on the night you go.

If you're looking for a day trip or something more refined, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is a must stop for those that like such things. Also, Philadelphia is rich in history regarding the Revolutionary War (War for Independence from Great Britain). There are walking and carriage tours for Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and the like. Additionally, despite the Filth-a-delphia joke above, our city has some unique and beautiful architecture, particularly in Old City. Along with Boston, Philly is special for housing modern buildings such as the Comcast center in addition to historic colonial homes and cobblestone roads. Speaking of Center City, it does house a few notable open space areas such as Love Park and Rittenhouse Square.

One last thing. Short of a bar, buying booze in Pennsylvania is a pain in the arse. It is not sold in grocery stores. You must go to a bar to buy a six pack of beer, otherwise you must buy a full case from a beer distributor warehouse. If you want wine or spirits, there is a separate store for that, too. Beer and hard liquor are not sold together. If you have a car, you're also about 20 minutes north of Delaware. There are several suburban multiplexes and malls for tax free shopping right over the border. They also have civilized laws on purchasing alcohol. Let me know if you need more info on this key piece of traveling.
Enjoy yourself if you do get some leisure time. Let me know if there is anything else I can help with. You can also email me: satur8 AT gmail.com

We are actually going to Widener University, it is really cool that you know it and also have worked for it. They host a big conference for university students (politics and law) and as I work for university here (indeed, close to the French border - it's about 5 km away, but the grass is always greener on the other side: I like France and can't stand this part of Germany, grew up in the North, close to the sea, this is where I belong) I (alongside with some colleagues) am in charge for a group of my university's students. I am really looking forward to it and meeting new people at a place I've never been before.
so again, thank you very very much, also about the buying-booze info. very useful. strange system that is, however.

I've been messing around lately with my bookcase lately because it has my turntables and my mixer on it, so I might try to mod it a little more with a better DIY laptop stand and some LED lights. It's somewhat a unusual hobby for me! Here's my present setup.

Not too much exciting going lately for me. Just work, relaxing, watching a lot of curling on TV.
I am, however, excited to be going to Miami for Ultra Music Fest and, of course, catching the legendary Chems experience live again. Has anyone here been to Miami before and, if so, what else should I be trying to see around the city for the week that I'm there?
Also, there are a lot of parties going on in Miami that entire week and I'm curious what you lot would go to if you were in my shoes. The list of parties is at: http://ultraweek.blogspot.com
Thanks as always for your feedback and input.
