I'm sure there are more to be found, but I was listening to Ferry Corsten's album L.E.F. and happened to notice that the track "Freefalling" sounds uncannily similar to "Chico's Groove". The drums and bass line are almost identical...check it out.

I do hear elements of both Chico's Groove AND One Too Many Mornings in that track (mostly One Too Many Mornings). I just chalked it up to the fact that there is slightly less that can be done with downtempo.

No matter what the case is, Exit Planet Dust came out in '95 while L.E.F. came out last year in '06. It doesn't say too much for Corsten, does it?

One track I really do like from that CD is Into The Dark featuring Howard Jones. It didn't get much hype and it's not a particularly stompin' track, but it has a great vibe.

TJ: You're definitely spot on... It's one too many mornings that I'm hearing, but chico's groove is there too. (I agree with satur8).

I've never beena huge fan of corsten. While he has some good tracks, a lot of his stuff just feels contrived and very packaged... if that makes sense. The fact of imitation alone just goes to show how timeless the chems are. :)

Lionrock copied the exact drum beat from Leave Home, and then Beck copied that drum beat off of Lionrock! Funny how things get aroung!

and what the fuck is that supposed to mean??

He put on a turn-down collar, a black bow, and wore his Sunday tail-coat. As such, he looked spruce, and what his clothes would not do, his instinct for making the most of his good looks would.

I like downtempo. I especially like a lot of the work the Chems have done in the genre, as well as DFA's version of The Boxer.

When done right, downtempo can have a lot of great elements and layers and is very enjoyable. I usually listen to downtempo on headphones in order to appreciate the little nuances that make it great.

However, in my opinion, softer music with a lower BPM isn't usually as dynamic as something faster with an exciting buildup. I think there is a lot more room for adventure and diversity in a faster track.

There are, of course, many exceptions to this. Cafe Del Mar by Energy 52 sounds equally good in both a fast DJ mix and a chill set.

So although there are standout tracks, for me the downtempo style by different artists in different genres tends to sound more similar than the faster stuff usually does.

That's what it's supposed to fuckin' mean. Do you think you could have found a better way to ask me?

I love discussing music, regardless if the people I'm speaking with have similar or different opinions. I'd assume that someone that likes downtempo would have a more chilled, laid back attitude. Perhaps now you can tell us your opposing views on downtempo instead of just simply coming at me again.

Bloody ell. That is, as you say uncanny. The bassline seems like a 1:1 copy....under the influence!

...imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.

And why exactly isn't Ferry Corsten allowed to use the Chems as a inspiration?

I'm cool with inspiration .. even some level of imitation, but given the beat and the bassline are identical -- it seems a bit too much. Unless he just coincidentally made the song without knowing about "one too many mornings", but I doubt that. My theory is his memory of "one too many mornings" probably subconsciously surfaced as he made the song. Then again, I'm probably being too analytical here...
