I know it's so typical to come into this thread and say "I'm listening to the Chemical Brothers!!"
But it must be said today: I'm listening to Hold Tight London from Trafalgar and it's so lush and beautiful and brilliant. Having this song in my life is a good thing.

I'm not listening to it now, because it gave me a splitting headache. But I was listening to MIA Kala on my way home. More like, skimming through tracks because I just couldn't bear it.
Seriously. What the fuck? I'm bummed. I tried listening to it when it first came out and I had to shelve it and come back later. I came back today, and nothing's changed. Maybe this isn't the right thread for it, but that album just falls apart at the seams. It's a tangled mess - a bit knotted and chaotic like a bunch of necklaces that got clumped together, or like racks full of clothing that are half falling off their hangers.
I love MIA, and when I love an artist I like to feel it's a life thing for me. I loved her first album so much and it's still fun to listen to so it's weathered the time rather well. I really wanted to say the same about Kala, but I can't. I don't know what it is exactly that bothers me so much about Kala - perhaps it's the way the songs are constructed. Everything sounds so loud and bombastic, up at the forefront. She can't sing and I don't think she makes any bones about that. Her style works for her and it works on Arular, bu it just doesn't transfer over to the shambles that is Kala. It's too much of an aural assault, as if she was trying to embellish on a good thing that worked on the last album. But too much of a good thing makes it not-so-good which just pains me because I dig MIA and think she's cool and she's got great ideas. There's some great sounds that just get buried in the mess. For example. I noticed some cool didjeridoo sounds in one of the tunes but everything including the kitchen sink comes in and eventually after a minute and a half you realize a headache is coming on so you need to skip to the next track and pray it's better.
There are 2, maybe 3 decent tracks worth listening to. There's a song called 20 Dollar which is rather interesting - a slow grind take on the Blue Monday melody, a sultriness and fucked upedness about losing your mind that works well with the dark vibe of the track that I find appealing. Another good track on this album is Paper Planes. Yeah, there's some studio magic that was put to use to help her carry a melody, but I like the track (and dig the rhythmic gun shots goin' on).
But some incredibly bad tracks are: Bird Flu is barely listenable. It sounds like a jungle orgy of mixed animal breeds gone terribly terribly wrong. The Turn, though interesting sounds which hapahzzardly go off in several wrong directions. And worst track in my opinion Jimmy - which is some horrid fucked up quasi-disco quagmire. Even the track Timbaland produced isn't as good as it could have been (though it is one of the better tracks on Kala).
So there's my rant. I'm disappointed, still. Maybe I'm just having a shitty day. I hate to say anything bad about MIA cuz she'll probably come kick my ass now, but hopefully her next album will be better. Like I said I like her, just not this album.
