I am going to be very controversial, I was going to start a new topic, but this album, after listening to it enough and all of the "growers" settling in has become my favorite chems album, replacing surrender **Biff quickly goes into position to shield from being hit by stones.

Here's why:

1. Concept Album: WATN has a good consistency, the instrumental songs like WATN, BG, and MMC all have very similar vibes and give it a good fast pace. No Path having the Willy Mason lines sink in gives a wonderful intro, although I was really hoping that song they used for the intro of the last live show's would've been on here, would've prob sound good going into WATN.

2. Non-Single Tracks: This i though was a big flaw with PTB, the lesser know tracks on the album weren't quite up to par with others. While I enjoyed them, I thought Marvo Ging, Big Jump, and Come Inside weren't the best compared to ones on an album like surrender. WATN has no tracks for skipping and songs like Harpoons and BG have the emotional power that massive Star Guitar and TPPR had.

3. Variety: Good variety, think Das Spiegel being next to Salmon Dance speaks enough to that.

Hmm... yes, well...

As it stands right now:

  1. DYOH

  2. SUR

  3. WATN

  4. CWU

  5. EPD

  6. PTB

It's a hard choice, I like the first third of PTB alot still, however the rest has lost its appeal. EPD is awesome but I usually don't feel like listening to it. CWU is the same for the most part, except IBIA is still amazing, etc. I'm trying not to over-listen WATN no matter how much I want to, and then my 2 favorites are pretty much a tie at the top. Really, this is fairly pointless.

PS. I have over 500 posts if you include my old account that was messed up in the transfer...

I personally think that A Modern Midnight Conversation is not only the best track on the album, but one of the top 3 tracks by Chems - it's absolutely fucking mindblowingly BRILLIANT. I love it SO SO SO SO SO much I can't even express it. Wasn't too impressed with some tracks though, but they might turn out to be growers. Burst Generator is our generation's Cowgirl - sounds bloody destructive in a good sense of the word. And... The Salmon Dance... or Float Downstream, as it appears on Japanese release for some reason... WTF is that about??? It's not that it's bad, but it's plain weird. And somehow, I'm not a fan of The Pills Won't Help You Now... sounds like some washout emo-pop band's top hit. Do It Again seems to be Hey Boy Hey Girl's weak brother... repetitive minimalist pop-house with catchy lyrics, but it sounds really empty. One of those "fun until you get sick of it" kind of tunes. No Path To Follow - really no idea what's the purpose of this intro, since it's also repeated in the beginning of Battle Scars. It's probably just to underline the 'psychedelia' of the album... kinda "ooh let's put this hypnotizing acapella in the beginning and not scare the listeners with the 2nd track's explosive noisy intro"... Harpoons is a very amorphous intermezzo. Doesn't seem catchy or something from the "essential listening" pile, but I think it just serves the purpose of changing the mood of the record from 'dancey' (Battle Scars) to 'so emotional its gonna make you cry' (that Pills track).

All Rights Reversed - now that's classic Chems. Rock-y, Big Beat-y sound that we all love. Great vocals and lyrics here as well. We Are The Night is also fantastic... 100% psychedelia, rocking tune.

So, the top picks from the album are:

1) A Modern Midnight Conversation

.

all this spacing is to show how better the song is compared to others... not that the others are bad, but this one shines like the sun among other smaller stars

.

2) Burst Generator

3) Das Spiegel

4) We Are The Night

5) All Rights Reversed

Im having a hard time understanding why people are comparing this to dig your own hole. In my opinion this album is very different from the previous albums in a way i can't explain, a lot of the songs are sparse without being minimal and as ed said it sounds very electronic not much sampling going on i think? I also think it's a grower as only a few songs grabbed me right from the of but upon listening to it again without the initial exitement i found myself liking the electoness of the songs more. Im suprised i like the salmon dance so much as i don't like jokey tracks but it really brings a smile to my face.

slipvin n noobs - please take all the shite to the special noobs corner. PLS!

anType - thanks for your post, but I don't agree with most of the negativity, somehow I think otherwise on all those pts, I'll come back to em.

everyone - seriously - what's the bloody point in comparing a dig u'r own hole or an exit planet dust to something made 13 yrs hence? they'r all brilliant albums, imo, and there's no reason to compare, the world's changing, the drugs are changing, music's changing, even tom n ed are changing!

i maintain i went beserk when ptb came out, and it's no way a bad album - i'm prolly gonna hear just this album for the next 3 months, but i'm gonna come back to spinning all of them at differnt times, in differnt moods, again. they'r all fuckin ace!
