okay it is about a year ago since 'Come With Us' was released - and when i listen to the album today i am still disappointed.

lets have a look at the trax:

(points from 0-10)

Come with us:

it has some good element and works very well as the opener live. but get's a little boring in the long run. 6/10

It began in afrika:

crappy trance/techno-ibiza-tune, stupid safri duo drums etc. etc. gets better at the end. 2/10

Galaxy bounce:

was already released -year before the album on a soundtrack. The version on the album is a little bit to radio-version-like (3:27min.!!). 5/10

Star guitar:

This is the master piece ! True chemical reaction: 'innovation' mixed with good old tekno-tricks + nice vocals. Outstanding live! 10/10.

Hoops:

i love the guitars and vocals - but the drums sound(s?) like they were made in Rebirth in 10 min. 6/10

My elastic eye:

arhhh, accident: short, boring zzzzz. ok screams in the refrain...2/10.

The state we're in:

I would prefer if chem. bros. was a 100% dance band, but i must say that they make som truly beautiful trax with Beth. 7/10

Denmark:

my home country, but not really a graet track. too much happy-disco- feeling and boring bass line for my taste...5/10

Pioneer skies:

100 % b-side suff...and even worse cos the brothers make some of the grates b-sides in the world (freak of the week!!!). 3/10

The test:

Embarrassing mid-90'es big beat meets brit-pop track. but actually a great tecno track in its live version. 2/10

.....what do you think? am i wrong?

Lets just get one thing clear: track length doesn't mean shit. 8 minute tracks get radio play. Now, let me start on the track-by-track breakdown:

1. Come With Us. Agreed, excellent live opener. However, I completely disagree on the "boring" bit. This track is super cool and stays that way. Definitely better than Leave Home and Block Rockin Beats (excluding that opening sound in BRB) as an album opening track....... 8/10

2. It Began In Afrika. I say that its (much) better than the type of tracks you compare it to. And the conga beats are real nice....... 8/10

3. Galaxy Bounce. Who cares if it was released before???? Wicked bassline....... 6.5/10

4. Star Guitar. Now this should be the one that is compared to ibiza tunes - at first I thought I was listening to shit. However, after a while of growing on me, I've decided that the melody and harmony and beats absolutely own....... 8/10

5. Hoops. I really like that main tune. the drums are cool, but for a better version of the drums, see: EBW6....... 9/10

6. My Elastic Eye. SUPER! SUPER! SUPER! SUPER!...... 10/10

7. The State We're In. Too long, a couple minutes shorter and it'd get an 8....... 6/10

8. Denmark. I like it, I don't know why....... 8.5/10

9. Pioneer Skies. Top track on the album. This track is amazing. its better than the great "freak of the week". This is one of those tracks I'll love for a long long long time....... 15/10 :D

10. The Test. Its not too amazing until the last couple minutes. 6.5-7/10

This album (IMO) is a brilliant album, I like it more than DYOH, but DYOH better. I really love Surrender (always).

Thats what I say...

cheers

freak of the weak guy is kinda dumb(grate???)i think the track cwu is good as any first track on any chems album.afrika is a bit formulaic,g.b is good old style chems tune.star guitar is best song they have ever written!elastic eye is brilliant-this is where freak....really misses the point this is a really excellent song hes just got to listen to it .hoops is great inventive very different-the danish guy shows his ignorance with his reference to rebirth-im sorry but thats an 808 it did exist as a classic instrument before some crappy swedish software ,+you would find it hard to get that weight off just rebirth +you couldnt get that off beat sound in the drums(also in ebw6).state is agood beth tune, denmark is funky and cool, the test is brilliant love ashcrofts voice.overall i think the cd is as good a epd but not as good as the other two :D

Come With Us

Great opener, even better than "Leave Home" was on EPD. I really like the part when that funky guitar comes in. Still a bit repetive. (8/10)

It Began In Africa

Ca-Ca-Ca-Ca-Can anybody tell me why they get so excited about that track ? It's strange and fast, ok, but that said, my car is as well. (3/10)

Galaxy Bounce

A shame that they did not include the version from the Tomb Raider OST, but the album version still rocks the house. (7/10)

Star Guitar

I must agree, this is a definitve grower. Didn't like it that much at the beginning, but it got better and better with time. (7/10)

Hoops

Nice track, nothing wrong here. And still there is something missing for the last point... (9/10)

My Elastic Eye

Great track, original reason for buying the album. Perfect work! (10/10)

The State We're In

Nice track. I really like the vocals, as I do with all female vocals on the Chem's albums. No real ending, though... (8/10)

Denmark

Usual Chem's track, not more, not less. (5/10)

Pioneer Skies

Could be a bit longer, but it's ok. The piano at the end makes the perfect ending. (7/10)

The Test

Well, I already wrote that I like this more than TPPR, and that should be a good song then. }:-) (10/10)

After all, this would be my overall album top list...

- Surrender

- Exit Planet Dust

- Come With Us

- Dig Your Own Hole

I don't get how people can slate Afrika for being a trance tune, then call star guitar God's gift! They are both pretty soft (for want of a better word - I mean the opposite of hard techno), not a bad thing, but I love both. I can't be bothered to do the whole album now, it's takes a lot of thought! Besides, I've got a lecture in like 10 minutes.

piku writes: "hoops is great inventive very different-the danish guy shows his ignorance with his reference to rebirth-im sorry but thats an 808 it did exist as a classic instrument before some crappy swedish software..."

- i know the 808 drum machine, released in 1980, (i love 808state!: newbuild). My point is just that the way they use the 808 sound on hoops is just boring and one big clich - if they will use the 808 machine they could at least have used it like Baby Ford, 808state and the hole acid scene: dirty, deep and hard. on hoops it sounds like a bad electro track...the Roland 808 sound dose'nt really fik with the mood of the other samples in the hoops track....

I agree with c-Row and anType about Afrika(kao)...it is the worst chem track ever!

Star guitar cannot at any point be compared to the hole trance-ibiza-scene. First of all: Star guitar is an intelligent track; thrilling structure and samples. Second: The mood of the track; it's mysterious lyrics etc - not even near the mood of a trance track.

my fave chem album is Surrender - which also has the best b-sides.

...it would actually love to have the real 808 machine...

I didn't say that it's the worst track. What I said was it's not that great.

The worst 3 tracks by Chems IMO are:

1) Be That Thing

2) Studio K

3) Dope Coil

studio k is a good enough, nout wrong with it. if you want a bad track pick on buzz tracks or let forever be

Come with us: A genuine starter, its a great song for build ups - 7.5/10

It Began in Afrika: I dont see why almost everybody in this forum hates this song, it IS the best song on the CD. The best drums I have ever heard - 9.5/10

Galaxy Bounce: Best bass line in CD, but it could lose the chick screaming shit (little short but no big deal) - 6/10

Star Guitar: I dont hear the big deal in this song. Dont get me wrong, its awesome, but it could be a little less ennoying and more drums - 8/10

Hoops - What can I say, its awesome. A real sign of originality. - 9/10

My Elastic Eye - Very good buzzin' synth. I dont like the fact that it needs more sounds and diversity in it - 6.5/10

The State were In: Horrible, for the exception of the perfect 'wow' effect in Beths voice. Greatest mix into a song in a while - 4/10

Denmark: Loving the beats, hating the repetativness and boring bassline - 6.5/10

Pioneer Skies: Its great for some crazy synths and b-side mixes, but, its ennoying bitterness to the song drops marks - 5.5/10

The Test: This actually compares to the best CB's song ever made (The Personal Psycadelic Reel). One problem, ASHCROFT! This song would be perfect without him 'singing'. I love it, but its alot like Sunshine Underground - 9/10

i don't understand why people don't like afrika. i was lucky enuff to hear the chems drop it in there dj set a couple of times, a whole 12 months before it was released. it is an awesome tune, but it works best in a club, listening at home doesn't have the same energy. also i have never heard a chemical brothers tune played by so many dj's at so many nights, if you were at any of the dance festivals in the uk in 2001 you could not miss it . it was truely one of the biggest tunes of 2001.

Not that you guys care but still here is my break down.

Come with Us - Very energetic and i just love the ending of the song. One of their best work. 7/10 8)

Galaxy Bounce - Doesn't really sound like chemical brothers. It is good song when you are working out or something. 6/10 :o

It began in Afrika - Yes it is indeed the best African style song that i 'ev heard. If compared to leftfield's Africa Shouxx and other African dance songs it is a winner. 9/10 :P

Hoops - The most powerful and one of the greatest songs made by CB. Just love the barking dog sample in the song(EBW 6 is amazing too ). 10/10 :D :D :D

Star Guitar - What is the deal with this song? Can anyone explain it to me ? I don't like this one very much. It sounds so simple when you first hear it but after a while you realize that has something. I just like the vocals in the song and the video for it, that's about it. 5/10 8O

My Elastic eye - This song gives me the feeling of being in a rock concert or something. 8/10 :)

The State we're In - What the hell is this :-? :-? :-? Poorest track on the cd. Some parts are good though. 4/10 }:-@

Denmark - Happy Techno. I love it. It remindes me of 70's car chaseing scenes. 9/10 ;-)

Pioneer Skies - I never listen to this song very often so no comments on this one. 6.9/10 :-//

The Test - I love the vocals and the ending. Very cool. 8.7/10 :?

The thing about this song is just as Mr. Rowlands puts it. The combination of a brilliant melody and heavy beats, tied together by perfectly harmonizing. It took me a while to get this because at first I wasn't listening to it. When it slows down and all you hear is whirring (and a 4/4 beat), then you notice the organ harmony in the background that you just took for granted before. For best results: maximize bass, without reducing any treble or other tones.

Oh, and listen to pioneer skies again, at night, in the dark, with volume at max.

Pioneer Skies is indeed a good electronic track. I have to admit , esp. at night with max volume.

I don't get the deal with star guitar - it is ok but the bass is very poor. It's missing something. But then you don't want all chemical music to sound the same.

I disagree with you when you say "Come with us" is better than previous albums opener tracks!

I like CWU, but LH is very very "typical" from the CB, I think; and BRB is perfect, in my opinion.Maybe this all a sign of changing times; I don't know why, but "Come with us" is less particular than a lot of other tracks. I don't like CWU album as the previous ones, maybe this influences my opinion. Listening Exit Planet Dust I really had delight }:-) , with this last album I just had a little enlightement with Star Guitar and Pioneer Skies. I think there is something very very very little that doesn't work... :? C'mon Brothers!
