well i was wondering what you guys think of this. I own a pair of traddtional turntables but im thinking of buying pioneer cdjs.

Now days increasingly when you are go into a club less and less djs use vinyl and are switching to use cd and mp3. Is the turntable gonna die. I would like to think not because it is a major simbol in dance music but saying that we do need progression and the intro of new technology increases the possibilitys when mixing. what do you think?

Well originally I thought only self respecting DJ's used vinyl, but then sneaker showed me to the light that is CD DJ'ing. Being able to take mixing to a new level with effects and so on.

I HATE the 'DJ's' who have a PC, and just select tracks from there, they don't use any skills, but talk between the tracks so as not to notice their attempt at mixing the tracks together.

I don't think the use of vinyl will ever die in DJ'ing, it's all a matter of preferance I think.

the future of djing will soley rely on the future of intuative and creative technology.

its no coincidence cd mixing has taken of as it has the last 3 years. taking the best bits of vinyl, like the user interface of a plater that emulates a vinyl surface. but giving massive creative options. most top djs are cd only now because the cd is a superior format in many ways.

its hard to see where the next step is. a lot of djs are talking about ableton live 4 software. its a great bit of software!! but i cant see this software entering dj booths around the world. who wants to go and see a dj play with a mouse and a laptop, its to sterile and uninspiring. i think ableton live is gonna be used more for creating mix cd, like sasha who used it on his involver mix. having said that sasha is involed with a company to develope a hardware interface to run with ableton live.

also the advent of dvd turntables is an exciting prospect. i think the idea of having visuals accompanying the music in a club will add a new dimension. i must say the rise of visuals is hear. the festivals i have been to this year have all had a person producing visuals. although not as part of the music, more as an add on. then again i know a band thats have always tied the music down with visuals ;-). but the problem with dvd vdj is that if you want to put a set of underground house tunes together then you need to make the vidoes for each individual track. and for the price of 2 dvd turntables you could buy a brand new samll car. this side of the future of djing seems a little outta reach for most people. i don't know if this is really gonna have an impact on the dj for the near future.

one thing for sure pionner will be at the forefront of dj technology. they are always one step ahead of the competition. and while everyone else is playing catch up pioneer go and develope something completely mind bendingly new. they live up to their name, true pioneers!! the only company i know that have an array of djs working for them and helping them with their research and development. i look forward to seeing their new products james zabiela has been helping develope.

DEATH TO CDJ DECKS

I haaate them. I have a real problem with machines that try and emulate another (vinyls) machines sound. Emulation leads to nothing new being created. I've posted before extensively about how every generation of music medium (aka tapes, vinyl) have lead to some sort of effect that has influenced the music world with the exception of CD. If you go down the road of "scratching" on CD then you narrow yourself to a road with no branches or turn offs. I also find that the sound of digitally emulated scratching doesn't sound the same.

EBW you do like to talk outta your crack!!

what?? the major part of why cdj have been so successful is the whole creativity of the decks, taking mixing to a different level. anyone on here who heard my 2 chemical brothers mixes i mixed on the cdj's, will of heard mixing that isn't possible on vinyl. the chems do not make traditional dance music that is easy to mix. but with my setup i can craft mad mixes. you can do now what 4 years ago people could not even dream about doing live. what are your experiences of djing, what experience have you had on cdj's, which ones did you use??? i have never me anyone who has not fell in love with cdjs after using them a bit. your perfectly entitled to preffer vinyl, but to rubbish cdjs just sound like you dont know what your talking about.

anyway

the dvj are awesome, i got to play on some for 5 minutes and they really are fun!! the concept of scratching a visual is mad.

as for the technics dlz-1200 i dont like them, i may be a bit biased but i cant justify my dislike. the technics are billed as the true vinyl evperience but its not true. say the tune you are mxing in is slightly lagging so you just want to adjust it to speed it up. on a vinyl deck you would you just tweak the adjustment on the spindle or wind the record on the very inner of the label. but on the dlz-1200 they have put the screen in the middle of the platter, so the old school way of winding the record on is not possible!! a spinning platter is not necessary in my opinion, its just an interface that helps the transition between vinyl to cd mixing. the way i mix on a cdj has totally changed as i have got used to them. i used to start a tune the like you would on vinyl, on the platter back, forth, back throw. now i use the cue and tap the beat and hit the start on the first beat of the bar.

the other thing bad on the dlz is its key correction. on my cdjs i have a 'master tempo' button which keep the the pich of the tune correct whilst altering the tempo. this is useful when you make a slight pitch correct on a tune with sustained notes, you dont get those pitch warbles you can get with you slow or speed up the tune. but on the dlz when you got the key correction on it produces horrible digital distortion.

these are problems that most people comment on about these decks. i found them to be true when i tested them out. but the best thing to do if you want to buy some deck is to go to the shop and try them out. just bear in mind what i have told you.

and surely all these djs cant be wrong!!

Pioneer's CDJ (1000) & DVJ-X1 are the Most Desired Products by DJ Magazine's Top 100 DJs!!

Each year an ever-increasing number of people from around the world vote on-line for their favorite DJ in the world renowned DJ Magazine's online poll. This year, the magazine received an amazing 100,000 votes from around the world with the results displayed in the Oct-Nov issue. A series of interviews and DJ profiles follows the ranking from the illustrious number 1 to 100.

When asked the key question; "What is the Best Technological Development For DJs in Recent Years?", an astonishing 46 out of 100 either quoted or drew reference to Pioneer's top CD turntable or the new DVD spinning hybrid, the DVJ-X1.

The No. 1 DJ for the third consecutive year was Tiesto, who made history this year by playing to a record audience of 4.6 billion people watching the Olympics from across the globe. So what product did this hugely influential ambassador of dance music say was the best technological development of recent years? Yes, you guessed it, the Pioneer DVJ-X1.

This year's comment from leading DJs showed a big increase in those embracing CDJ decks as the current and future source technology in replace of vinyl. Radio 1 DJ Seb Fontaine stated, "I probably play 10% from records. If I like a record I burn it straight to CD now." Another influential DJ Danny Howells said, "In the last few years even the most hardcore acetate users have made the switch to CDs".

The Pioneer CDJ-1000 was quoted by 18 DJs as their favoured technological development, five of which were in the top 20. The Pioneer DVJ-X1 was cited by seven big name DJs including Tiesto, Marco V and Anne Savage. Quite impressive considering the product has just been launched.

Other Pioneer products to receive endorsement as the most influential product of recent times included the DJM-909 mixer by ATB, who came in at no.13, and the EFX-500 effects unit by DJ Vibe.

Another startling observation was the support from other DJ's such as no. 11 DJ Carl Cox who quoted the CDJ-1000s saying, "They (Pioneer) have got it right and have really opened things up for DJs". No. 10 DJ duo, Deep Dish, also answered the above question with, "Pioneer CDJ-1000 ? game over!"

When asked his oddest moment of 2004, James Zabiela cited his experiences at a test room in Pioneer's headquarters in Japan as engineers and 'bigwigs' looked over him! Describing the experience he claimed, "It was like I was in a UFO being experimented on by aliens. Mad!"

To gain so much exposure from the world's most respected and influential DJ poll is an impressive achievement for Pioneer Pro-DJ products. It is a fitting sign that 10 years on, the brand and its products are now considered the industry standard by top professionals and looked upon as the undisputed leader in the field of DJ technology. "Game Over"!

I agree that you have more dj under you belt (and i respect you for that) but what I'm trying to say is that cd's are leading music down a tunnel. When music came out on tapes, you could do flanging and when a tape would get old you would get what is now called "Tape Echo", with Vinyl you got scratching.

With CD's there's no way you can physically manipulate the music. Do you understand what I'm saying?

I bet you can do some fantastic things with CDJ's but I would never want everyone to use 100% CDJ's, more like CDJ's as a last last last last last resort.

yo and sneaker, where can i listen to this mixes you have done?

second atempt at writing this. i see the phpBB : Critical Error have returned }:-@

i first read ebw reply first thing this morning thinking whats wrong with this kid!! but 12 hours later i understand what you are saying!!

basically your saying that with tape and vinyl you can touch the vinyl or the reel and alter the sound by the physics of altering the speed of the format, its real in the sence that what your doing creates a natural change in sound. where as with a cd its stuck in the middle of a box spinning around doing its own thing. and to alter that sound takes an indirect input that effects zeros and ones loaded in a memory buffer that is then processed by algorithms to produce a processed sound. but to me thats a romance thing, maybe the touchy feely realness is nice. but it doesn't mean the digital medium is wrong. no one ever complains about the chems using sampled beats rather than recording all their drums from a live performer.

i dont have a problem with that. the digital world is all about sampling a source, whether it be an image, sound or video. and no matter how great the resolution of the sampling it will never be as true as the real thing. but we all live in a digital age and have benifited from those advances. for me i love my digital camera, i prefer it over a film camera. and your argument could just as easily apply to a camera. but the benefits of a digital medium far outweighs analogue in most cases. i actually hate digital televison. i think the picture is far worse than analoge, but this is cos they try and cram as many channels through the bandwidth at the expense of compression.

thing is i have always loved my technology, i embrase the future. probably that why i love digital decks.

cant beat the old vinyl V cd debate!!

I think you'll find HDTV will exceed all your expectations. It's 6 times sharper than Digital TV. For some reason the Japs and US have it, but we haven't caught on yet.
