my tuppence worth -

if u pitch a record up or down by more than 8% generally it sounds shite, lets face it. unless your playing hard house, where part of the joy is pitching everything up to 'squeak' effect.

some house tunes u can get away with at 7% ish, only if they got no vocals and not much going on in them.

why would u need a quartz lock? i never understood that. its just one more thing to fuck up when your mixing - 'why isnt this tune staying in time even though im pitching it? oh look ive left the pointless quartz lock on when i could have just moved the pitch back to the center before'

deck reverse is a gimmick.

the new technics have sorted out the little groove at the 0% problem now so thers no sudeen jump when u move it from the lock position.

at the end of the day, if your playing out 99% of clubs will have technics, so by all means learn on other decks, and then watch as u have to adapt when u actually start playing in front of a crowd.

next!

Surely any one deck will be similar to another? I mean, as long as their direct drive, does it matter that much? Turntables are pretty basic things, you know

Agreed. A record player, for all its bells and whistles (or lack of them), is still just a record player - a very old piece of technology.

I ultimately agree with Sneakerbeater, that CD decks are superior. Especially now that people can download practically any track their hearts desire. In my opinion, any DJ with a grain of ambition should use CD decks these days. I don't want to see vinyl disappear forever as I believe it still has a place, but CD decks and computer software allow far more creativity.

no way, not at all - even different technics feel different to each other - youve got age to consider, how tight the pitches are, how theyve been set up, plus any one of numerous analogue differentials that can occur. these are mechanical devices remember, not digital like cd decks.

and as for the differences between technics and other decks, im telling u they're massive. even something as basic as a difference in torque makes a world of difference, as does the ratio of the pitches. they just have a totally different feel, and if your not quick enough to respond to these it can ruin your set.

as for CD i reckon at least 50% of pausebutton stuff is mixed off cd now. i dont really have any preference for CD or vinyl djing anymore, theyre both just tools to get the job done. i certainly wouldnt say cd decks are superior, just different. ok, youve got looping function, which is cool, but as for FX any decent mixer will have some good quality onboard ones. or u can go old skool and use guitar pedals on your vinyl ;)

pausebuttonaudio are combining decks, cd decks and ableton for live remixing at the moment, and its going really well. should have some mixes to post up in the near future ;)

Whatever, but I sure as hell don't feel like paying more money to limit myself for the simple reason that I'll be limited in the future. 8% doesnt cut it when mixing between techno, acid house and dnb. As for the high pitch change screwing things up arguement, thats what the key lock is for (Just so I'm being clear this keep the tune at its original pitch while being sped up, it doesn't make it so you can't change the speed). So I'll be proud of my T.80s and not be ashamed that they don't limit me enough (If I need to I'll drag em up to a club).

Oh, and yes, reverse is one of the most useless features I've ever seen.
