Okay so New Years Eve has come and gone again, the years seem to race by these days. For the last 2 years I have spent NYE down the pub with my mates DJing. This year we decided go out clubbing again rather than go to a place we frequent most weeks. Of course satisfying everyone?s musical taste on a night out is a pain in the arse. Going to Turnmills was a bit of a late decision, but the best decision as far as I was concerned.
This has got to be the first NYE I have not had a proper drink in years. I decided I would drive up to London cos getting home is a real nightmare on the train, plus I have spent the rest of the week in a drunken mess on some big nights out. Tonight was going to be about clarity!!
Unfortunately that clarity did not extend to thinking which bits of London were going to be closed off. I had intentionally left late to so I could just hook up with my mates who were not coming out and just say happy New Year. It would be nice to all be together but it's simply not possible to please everyone. London town was traffic hell. Cars just randomly going places cos know one knew where they were going with the road closures. I though I was going was gonna be at turnmills for just after eleven but the last 10 minutes of the journey took well over an hour. We spent midnight somewhere in Southwark and popping party poppers out of my car window. I couldn?t even see the fireworks they left of on the south bank even though I could hear them. Probably the most anti-climax start to a year I have ever had. The other thing pissing me of I knew the chems were taking to the decks at midnight.
So we finally got into turnmills just after quarter past midnight and by the time we sorted out coats and drink we didn?t get into the main room till half past. I was hoping they were not going to play a 2 hour set cos then I had missed a big chunk of it. the main room was heaving, worse than being on a tube train in rush hour. But we spent the first hour or so just just away from the booth, just under one of the speakers. Turnmills has a filthy dirty bass booming sound system. I have heard better sound systems, but turnmills does seem to favour the bottom end of the sound. That?s cool with some of the chems tunes. We all secretly enjoy our internal organs being rearranged by the sonic attack of the chemical brothers.
When we were down the front the chems were throwing the most full on acid throbbing tunes they had in their armoury. And the whole place was just going off. Turnmills is just on of those place where you know the atmosphere is gonna be excellent. I have only had one shit night there in 6 years plus of going regularly. After a while we moved to T3 room cos the main room was just getting a bit too much. Normally the sound is piped in at full quality, but tonight you only got the bass sound from the main room and upper frequencies were missing in action. It a shame, cos like some other on this forum say T3 can be the best place to enjoy the music when its busy.
On the tune front the only new tune of the album they played were ?surface to air? at midnight, which I missed. And ?believe? which sounded fantastic in the club, the bass utilizing everything the sound system had to offer. I don?t know if they played other dance floor tunes on the album like ?galvanize? or ?come inside?, if they did it was while I was not their or at the bar. Other tunes of theirs they played were ?acid children?, ?electronic battle weapon 6?, ?HIA?, ?under the influence?, ?it doesn?t matter?, ?nude night?, ?star guitar? and ?open up? remix. Also they played a few of their booties, hbhg/srg pepper, dj milo/impulsion, freestyle/metro la, losing control/mother earth/mars needs women and liaisons dangerous/spine bassline. All in all 3 hours of chemical magic!! I do wonder if there is a promo mix coming out, I haven?t heard anything in the last couple of dj sets that sounds like a chemical bootleg. No bootlegs, no promo mix I think unfortunately. But I could be wrong
After the chems we had Justin Robertson next. Alway impressed how quick dj can turn up to a club. i know Justin had been playing Club Class in Maidstone for midnight. I love that club, my best mate had a residency there for a couple of years and for a small club outside London they certainly have something good going on there!! I haven?t heard Justin play in years. It was a pleasure to enjoy a dj that has influenced the chemical brothers. And he didn?t shy away from the acid music we had enjoyed earlier. Having Justin come on after the chemicals was a natural progression in sound. he also was keen on dropping some chems tunes. He played the abe duque remix of ?galvanize? which I would like to get my hands on. He also played ?acid children? with ed in the booth playing with the EQ?s!!! and later on he played ?believe? which once again tore the dance floor up. It certainly was got me dancing on the floor like a bell end!!! It was also nice to see that Ed also enjoys the dance floor as much making the dance floor move. I cant ever remember seeing a dj dancing on the floor and appreciating another dj?s talent. I did get to chat with Ed for a bit, he was keen to find out my thoughts on push the button!! He is a proper gent to speak to, I only wish I had a copy of my ?respect your brothers? mix cd?s to give to them. I love them to hear my perspective on their music.
If your not that familiar with Justin Robertson you can hear a mix hear of his set at last years together new years eve. Again featuring 3 chems tunes in the mix. Check it out!!http://www.turnmills.co.uk/together/musicplayer_content.html
I could go on more with my waffle on Lottie and Graeme Park, but then we?d never get to the end of this review.
I do think, well at least for me that 2004 was a classic year in the history of the chemical brothers. I got to see them 5 times this year, a record for me and there a plenty of memories I have taken away. Tim Burgess singing ?life is sweet? at wolves civic on their live return. Hearing FC/Kahuna drop ?acid children? at Creamfields. Going to Sankey Soaps to see the chems play at that excellent club in their spiritual home that started their music. And all this in a year where there hasn?t been a mainstream release!! For those who have heard the album you know 2005 will be just as exciting. I cant wait to get back to Brixton to see the chemical brothers playing push the button live!!!!

sneaker, as always - a great review and a pleasure to read!! You da man. Sounds like you had a great New Year's Eve despite the London traffic. Turnmills looks like wicked fun! And it's good to read Ed was gettin down to Justin Robertson, really enjoying himself and wanting to know your thoughts on Push the Button! How cool is that!

turnmills does not look that exciting that week
friday : Gallery, Pete Tong, Tall Paul, Judge Jules, Greg Downey, Momento, T2 Presents Joy, Steve Lee, Alex Anderson, Claudio Basile (Vertigo), Glen Scott
saturday : Extreme Euphoria, Anne Savage, BK, Jay Pidgeon, Matt Gardener, Gonzalo, Pagano, Hugh Stevenson
seems to be a bit of a hardhouse weekend, all the day-glo kids with their mitsubishi logos. friday should be the better of the 2 days, tall paul and pete hong should be alright. and if steve lee is one out of lee cabrera then he should play some decent house. turnmills is a great club, you shouldn't miss it out on your trip. seeing is believe, hearing is receiving
still theres another night that friday, a small little club called makoosa. i heard the djs a quite rockin there!

Nice review Sneaker, i really wish i had of gone, only been 2 a Glint once and it was wicked, hopefully there play there again this year. How was subliminal sessions last nitw, missed that 2 which i really wanted to know 2, saying that herd rumors erick is gonna have a uk resisdency again.
didn't make it to subliminal sessions, not going into why but i was dissapointed not to go }:-@
yeah i think we will be seeing more of erick this year. subliminal have about 4 clubs they hold sessions at up and down (not that far down though) the country. i know erick has been looking for a residencey in london for 2005. i think if new years day worked out well, and ministry want to payout for morillo (cos he dont come cheap), then we will see morillo play the box a few times. morillo isn't back to the uk until april, so maybe put april in your diary for possible ministry action.
oh and glad you'll like my review.

catching a train from tamworth at 12 o'clock i got to london for about 12:30, after being melested by a child throwing his toys at me. i got given simple instructions on how to find turnmills which was left at hueston station pass kings cross, pentenville street, 100 yards right. wow how wrong that was. i spent a good hour/hour an a half searching for that bastard. i finally found it and went inside to pick my ticket up. the kind people there told me i was on the list so i just needed to say my name as i walked in, which was nice but i would of liked a ticket slip as proof of my going to turnmills. so upon this information i preceeded to london city centre for a browse. i returned to turnmills at 19:30.
we weren't allowed in till about 20:15 which was ok but i was a bit cold. what struck me about turnmills when i first walked in was the magic of the place, with its decorations and the like. the second thing that struck me was that literaly every staff there was foriegn, from the european area. which dosen't bother me but when you go to the bar and all you get is 1 coin change for the note your've just given her, it's a bit surreal.
as i went by myself i felt a bit like a prat waiting for the place to fill up. unfortunately non of my friends really like the chems (and i still call 'em friends!!) or wanted to leave tamworth for new years, saddo's. after 21:30/22:00 the floor started to fill up so i made my way strutting on just happening to be at the front of the stage. come 11:30 the brothers come on the the floor goes wild. at this point i notice that i'm right up against the front of the stage and i'll be there for the duration. the set kicked of beatifully and continued along this callabar. tye lighting was something with "the black velvets" writing on my shirt illuminating to the strobe lighting (anybody think they recognise me yet), which was pretty cool as it was white writting on black t-shirt which gave it a floating feel to it.
i happened to be right next to this girl that had the mini-ist mini-skirt and looked like an extra from the cheecky girls (no joke), she was a night mare. the engineers had a wright go at her for putting drinks on the ledge of the booth and for trying to mess about with the switches on the decks. she had made a wright prat of her self. at one point i was on the bass box and she decided to come up as well. the girl was quite lteraly rubbing up and down on me whilst her boyfriend was away which was fine but not when your crapped against the wall with condensed electrical wires on top of your head. i soon got down. it didn't end there,oh no. the bitch then spilt her drink all down my right arm. alcohol fruit drenched sticky arm, fucking perfect.
my highlights was writting acid children on my phone up to tom with him sticking his thumbs up and saying of course.
shacking hands with both tom and ed which is always an honour
having my arm almost ripped of by a cool engineer after he decided to shake and dance with my arm at the same time.
dancing with justin robertson and ed
speaking withing ed for a bit
oh and only having to wait till 8 o'clock for the first train back to tamworth.
this is the end of my stoty, hope i didn't bore you to much.
if you're still reading after this point well done to you.
happy new year

I like your story chemical_si. Its so nice at turnmills how it is really well decorated. It maybe weird but i really like the walls at turnmills and the way thet are tectured simular to the bits by the bar that remind me of darleks. Its also really nice how you can get so close 2 the dj booth, when i went 2 Glint and Boutique it was cool being able 2 shake the chems and fbs hands and talk to them. I did a simular thing that you did giving Tom my phone with 'out of control written on it' he showed Ed and then said they would play it later.
