Maybe I've been oblivious in the past, but I wanna say that advertisers have done a damn good job in picking some very enticing tunes as of late. Many artists I've never even heard of...

Yeah that song used in the Lincoln commercial made me remember my old Peter Schilling CD gathering dust on my shelf - the cover is good and I like it (the commercial came out a couple of years ago). My brother has worked in advertising for several years and he's had to oversee a ton of music that's used in ads. Before the days of mp3's when he'd be out in California on business he'd take me music shopping but it wasn't to buy me stuff or beef up his music collection. There was this place called Hear Music in Santa Monica where you could listen before you buy. That was a revolutionary concept at the time. Talking with shop employees and even customers on what they thought was good, and figuring out how that music applies to the product's target - a bit of marketing research and all that. Anyway, the right music is as big a deal as writing the story board or scripting an ad. There's a lot of criticism over the ad industry- people don't like to be sold shit. And there's criticism over music used in commercials especially at people's favorite artists' music being reduced to product selling jingles. But there's no denying how effective its impact is. If music doesn't sell product then the cleverly edited jingled aspect of the song will sell the artist. (I'd never buy NFL tickets or anything NFL related, but I might head on over to iTunes and download the song as soon as I'm done posting and buy that song because it's super awesome). Anyway a bit of an early morning tangent for me but lately advertising has been a bit more than a passing interest.

Anyone remember this? ;)

And for those of you wondering, no - this song was written for Nike and there's no plans of it being released.

I'm loving this thread. I totally agree that some of the music in TV adverts can be unique and brilliant. One of my favourite compilations ever is:

The only trouble is that it can ruin a song, as we all experienced with Moby's Play. It takes the images you've created in your head, and replaces them with a Zanussi washing machine.

Remember this one? From a Nokia advert:

Yes, what happened to Moby's Play was really unfortunate! Here you have a brilliant and beautiful album, and it was pimped to death in television ads, radio ads, even some songs used as themes for crappy sitcoms. I understand Moby and the label wanted that album heard but I think they went way overboard with allowing every song to be used ad nauseum in commercials. It's sad. That's a big thing Moby has to carry around, everyone knows what happened with Play! After being inundated with Moby every time I turned on my television, I eventually was turned off of Play. It was a long time before I could listen to that album again and not have the mental theater of accompanying Nordstroms television commercials.

Speaking of Nordstroms (they are a US department store for those of you outside of the US). Nordies was, at the time Play was released, the largest fur retailer in the States. No other department store sold as many furs as Nordstroms at that time. So although Moby's music wasn't used in a fur advertisement, I thought it was kind of funny that this little vegan man's music was being used to push such a large fur retailer.

I was lucky with Moby's Play — when I finally heard Play, I was like "Oh, this has a bunch of songs I vaguely remember hearing in commercials when I was still young." So, luckily it was pretty fresh for me.

Thanks for bringing back some good memories! I had this once on a CD when I started developing my taste in music and burned all those new discoveries to cds. Haven't listened to it for quite some years.

There were some songs in the Verizon Rule The Air commericals that were excellent. This is the only one I can find:

They were all original compostions unfortunately, so no release there.

Ok, that one might be a little cheesy in the sense of this thread here but I think my company did a great job on both the video and chosing the star wars theme/ music for this commercial. I just love the old movies and their score.

Yeah, that's a good one. ^ Volkswagen has had amazingly consistent and well done ads since the Beetle was introduced to the US.

I shouldn't laugh. But I am, because I remember when that happened! Now I know who the culprit is!

Some days ago i heard the part of a song "Block rockin' beats" in the video of a belarussian lottery (I can provide a link to this video).

I want to ask, if not violated in this case copyrights Chemical brothers? If violated, I am ready to assist in their defense, because I am a lawyer and also a fan of The Chemical brothers.

Thanks.

I used to visit http://www.commercia...sandbeats.co.uk for finding that tune on an advert but I just went on there to find this message:

Quote

Commercial Breaks and Beats

The entire Commercial Breaks and Beats site was arbitrarily deleted in its entirety by EasyCGI on November 29th 2008, without any authorisation or action from the site owner, thereby erasing almost 6 years of hard work, both from the site's editor, and the loyal and collaborative users.

At this stage, I'm still deciding what to do, as EasyCGI are being obstructive and unapologetic. The site's database is safe and backed up, but the messageboard, which has flourished over recent years, has gone along with the large userbase. I hope that this may be the time to move the site away from EasyCGI to a company that treats their long-term customers with more care.

I apologise for any inconvenience caused.

This is hilarious, Andrey, you are going to end up in prison if you step up against the Belarussian lottery authorities.
However, I do believe they pretty much have paid some money to use the sample. Not even in Belarus it might happen that such a sample is used by public authorities without permission.
love is all.
