By Benjamin Franklin (1785)
?There is a tradition that in the planting of New England, the first settlers met with many difficulties and hardships, as is generally the case when a civiliz?d people attempt to establish themselves in a wilderness country. Being so piously dispos?d, they sought relief from heaven by laying their wants and distresses before the Lord in frequent set days of fasting and prayer. Constant meditation and discourse on these subjects kept their minds gloomy and discontented, and like the children of Israel there were many dispos?d to return to the Egypt which persecution had induc?d them to abandon.
?At length, when it was proposed in the Assembly to proclaim another fast, a farmer of plain sense rose and remark?d that the inconveniences they suffer?d, and concerning which they had so often weary?d heaven with their complaints, were not so great as they might have expected, and were diminishing every day as the colony strengthen?d; that the earth began to reward their labour and furnish liberally for their subsistence; that their seas and rivers were full of fish, the air sweet, the climate healthy, and above all, they were in the full enjoyment of liberty, civil and religious.
?He therefore thought that reflecting and conversing on these subjects would be more comfortable and lead more to make them contented with their situation; and that it would be more becoming the gratitude they ow?d to the divine being, if instead of a fast they should proclaim a thanksgiving. His advice was taken, and from that day to this, they have in every year observ?d circumstances of public felicity sufficient to furnish employment for a Thanksgiving Day, which is therefore constantly ordered and religiously observed.?

Well , not mainly because of thanksgiving but it's a reason.
Anyway HAPPY THANKSGIVING to ya'll out there who celebrate it!
We don't do it - we have something much cooler Dec 5 8)
Sint Nicolaas it's called ( Sinterklaas ) as we say it.
Sinterklaas comes with the Zwarte Pieten ( His helpers ) around a month before Dec 5 to Holland with the Steamboat. From this day to dec 5 little kids put there shoe in front of the heather and they sing songs. The next morning they will find a little surprise in their shoe : A choclate or whatever. On dec 5 it's " Gifts night " , and Sinterklaas gives a bang on your door and leaves a big bag full of gifts !!!
And than comes the moment when you're mom tells u Sinterklaas doesn't excist , and it was her who put chocolate in my shoe , and it was Uncle Joop who would bang on the door and leave the bag of gifts.
It was painfull :'( But it's so cute to see those little kids getting all excited!

This is the real Santa Claus (Sinterklaas) story. It's the pre-celebration of St. Nicholas' Day, which is actually December 6. Somehow most of the Western world attached it to Christmas and Jesus' birth instead. Which is ironic since Christians attached Jesus' birth to the Roman festival Saturnalia. Can't wait to see what the Scientologists will eventually do.....
December 6 is the one day of the year when the Samichlaus (ie. Santa Claus) beer, the world's strongest lager, is brewed. It then is aged for one year and released the following St. Nicholas' Day at an alcohol by volume of 14-16%. It tastes like chocolate-covered cherries dissolved in ethanol. Oh how I miss my Christmas beer!
