LEFTFIELD TO RELEASE BEST OF COMPILATION
LEFTFIELD are to release a best of compilation to coincide with the tenth anniversary of their debut album.
?A Final Hit? is out on October 3, and comes ten years after the release of their debut album ?Leftism?.
?A Final Hit? will feature their early hard-to-find 12? releases ?Not Forgotten? and ?More Than I Know? alongside their hits, including Open Up? which features John Lydon.
A limited edition version of the album comes with a bonus DVD and includes videos for ?Open Up?, ?Original?, ?Afro Left?, ?Release The Pressure?, ?Afrika Shox?, ?Dusted? and ?Swords?.
Bandmember Neil Barnes said: ?I had never sat down and listened to the music that spanned our career in this way before. The essence of Leftfield was to simply make exciting music, push back some boundaries, and to take creative steps forward. We had some great fun on the way.?
The tracklisting runs:
* ?Release The Pressure?
* ?Afro-Left?
* ?Song Of Life?
* ?Original?
* ?Storm 3000?
* ?Open Up?
* ?Dusted?
* ?Phat Planet?
* ?Afrika Shox?
* ?Not Forgotten?
* ?A Final Hit?
* ?Swords?
* ?Shallow Grave?
* ?Snakeblood?
* ?More Than I Know?
Leftfield formed in 1990 and their 1995 debut album 'Leftism' is widely regarded as a landmark album in dance music. The follow-up, 'Rhythm And Stealth', was released in 2000.
The group also became renowned as remixers, working with the likes of Roots Manuva and David Bowie.

Its a good album, shame 'Original' is a radio edit though. The bonus tracks (like Not forgotten) are ok, but I've only listened to them a couple of times.
The DVD is disappointing imo, just contains the videos for the singles, some of them a litte dull. Some live footage would have been (like gig they performed where bits started peeling from the ceiling }:-)) and maybe some interviews. Still, nice to see Leftfield in the charts again, hopefully they can teach the masses that Bodyrockers and Inaya Day are not the best thing around in dance music.

I personally think the album is a travesty. Here's my full review of it...
First up, I have to say I'm pretty disappointed by the track selection on this CD and am curious as to just how much input Neil and Paul actually had in the choice as I suspect it was non-existent. Let's take it track by track:
1. Release The Pressure
Good first track - this is the single version from 1996 featuring Cheshire Cat and, considering it's long deleted, a welcome re-issue.
2. Afro-Left
The album version from "Leftism". Personally, I'd have gone with the radio edit as it doesn't lose too much and it would have left more space for other stuff...
3. Song Of Life
Uh oh. The album version. Maybe I'm in a minority here but I've never actually rated this version of the song and have always preferred the "single" version from 1992. Pity it seems to have been airbrushed from history . Also, this seems to have been lifted directly from the "Leftism" CD and so has a rather jarring opening...
4. Original
The radio edit. I hate this version as it's just a bit TOO hacked up.
5. Storm 3000
Odd choice of track as it was never a single but still a classic. The one thing however that I am extreeeemely unhappy about is the very end of it. On "Leftism" it segues beautifully into "Open Up", On this album it fades out just a bit too late so that you hear a spilt second of the "Open Up" coming in. Then you get...
6. Open Up
Which is the radio edit which has a completely different beginning. It jars - badly! Pity that they couldn't have gone for the superior 12" version or, at the very least, the slightly edited version that was only on the triple LP version of "Leftism".
7. Dusted
8. Phat Planet
These seem to have just been lifted directly from the "Rhythm And Stealth" CD so "Dusted" doesn't even get to finish properly like the single version does...
9. Afrika Shox
The longer album version. Again, why not go with the single version? It's a good edit and it would have left more space for some better tracks above...
10. Not Forgotten
This is the legendary "Hard Hands" mix - uncut too. They got something right at last.
11. A Final Hit
A fantastic track that, quite rightly, should be on album bearing Leftfield's name, rather than being buried away on an obscure soundtrack to a film that no one's heard of *cough*. Pity they couldn't have gone for the full uncut version that's on the second "Trainspotting" soundtrack.
12. Swords
Ok, this is just taking the piss now. Again, this has just been lifted directly from the "Rhythm And Stealth" CD so it starts with the end of previous track "Dub Gussett" rattling away!!??? There is a "clean" version of "Swords" that was released on the 10" version of the album. Why, for pity's sake, couldn't they have used this or just left it alone and gone with the single version?????
13. Shallow Grave
Another classic track rescued from a soundtrack and it's good to hear a decently mastered version at last that's had the voume turned up -- the original pressing was of shocking quality! Pity the ending's been chopped off though.
14. Snakeblood
Officially the last track that Leftfield recorded and it's good to see that it has actually been left completely intact.
15. More Than I Know
A very rare track on CD - and with good reason! Neil and Paul have both gone on record disowning this track so it's inclusion seems a bit strange as it's a pretty rubbish track and a terrible one to end this album with. Bah.
So, that's it. An album that is not a fitting tribute to Leftfield at all and that smacks of yet another contractual-obligation compilation knocked up by a record company that doesn't give a stuff about the content. History is littered with many similar "best ofs" that have had, to me, incomprehensible track selections. I made my own Leftfield compilation last year - I like to think it's better than this!

Good review mate, I think it does spoil a compilation when some of the tracks included are edits just to save space.
Release the pressure: I can't get enough of the intro to the Leftism, I really dig the mysterious atmosphere and the anthemic vocals of Earl Sixteen. Its nice to hear a different version though, never heard this one before. I have faint memories of seeing the video back in 1995 and I remember more vocals in it, this must be the one I heard.
Song of life: I've never heard the original but I love the Leftism version, the part where the pads come in and the 4/4 beats come in send shivers down my spine. Have to agree about the intro, the same was done with the track on the Tomb Raider Soundtrack and this sounded crap!
Original: the edit's just not the same!! :(
Afrika shox: I'm undecided on this one, as I like the intro to the Rythmn and Stealth version with its slow tribal beat merging into the scary robot voice and pads. However it wouldn't be too much of a loss as the fan can always play the album.
I think you're right djdust, the album looks to have been hastily put together by the record company without venturing properly into Leftfield's discography. I've only listened to the album a couple of times and its unlikely I'll come back to it very often.

This was the single version that was released in January 1996. I love it.

Hell yes, this one of the best intro's ever. When i was watching "Money Runner" (is it the right title?) i was looking like this 8O and needed to know the artist! Then i sorted it out and was screaming "Yeah i've got it, YEAAHH!!!!!!!!!!"
