It's something that has been bothering me...

I'm talking about concerts, parties, live sets, etc.

They just anounce who are going, their names, but nobody specifies which style are they going to be playing.

I think that it would be better if the ones that are in charge of that wrote which style they're in, next to their names.

That way people would be able to try and listen some new stuff, either because they like that style or because they just want to try it.

Does this sound strange?

yeah, doesn't sound weird. it would be a good chance for people getting to know some new bands and styles, they probably wouldn't join such a concert without any describtion. Would be also better for the bands themselves because if people know what kind of music they stand for, their sales maybe could increase much faster or higher. As for me, when i listen to some interesting interpret of any category i'm scanning the stores for more stuff of her/he and maybe to raise my cd collection. They should think aboout that. Ok , when Britney Spears and her fellows are performing we all know what to expect ---> yipping boob jumping wanna be chaste girlies X-D

On punk music flyers every band is always really well explained

But then where would that leave a band like the Chems? We know their overall style cannot be pigeonholed into one genre. They aren't really big beat (or at least aren't called big beat anymore, thankfully) and they aren't break beat, they aren't rock, they aren't indie and so on... you know what I mean. They have this insane gift of being able to tap into any style and put their fingerprints all over it. Plus their dj sets - what made them so unique it that they incorporated rock songs into a hip hop flow, then put on something big and dancey. When I've seen them dj, there was a definite variety of music and styles being presented in their set.

Like Pringled mentioned, on punk flyers he's seen there's always a detailed analysis of the band. But that's on punk flyers - though there are different types of punk, you're still dealing with one general style of music.

Overall, I think brief descriptions of a band's style on flyers or whatever is a nice concept, but it can get far fetched and overly wordy (like my posts, hehe ;) ) Like if you go to a festival and you hear of a band that's playing, you go check them out and if you like it, you like it. And if you don't, then oh well. Of course if I go to a club I don't want to get stuck listening to crappy trance, but flyers and blurbs on websites usually indicate what kind of music will be played out anyway - the dj's featured are obviously going to play whatever kind of music is being advertised.

Half the coolness of discovering something new has the element of surprise. Besides word of mouth, sometimes if I discovered something when I haven't gone looking for it, it turned out to be nice surprise. I think that happened with Ed when he saw the Magic Numbers for the first time.

I went to VHS or Beta the other day and the flyer said they were sounding like LCD soundsystem and Daft punk. So I checked it out,

The sounded alot like the (old)Cure or the Bravery. Great band but nothing similar to Daft Punk.

But yeah like Whirly said, most of the times it just fun to go and discover bands. That's an amazing way to listen to music.

So if you go to a festival don't go to the mainstage (unless the Chems or Prodigy are playing ;-) ) but go to the little stages and discover new bands.
