I need help converting a dvd to vcd. I got a dvd rom drive, and have tried many of the converters randomly, but they fail. Can someone give me names of some which actually work, and are available free online?

Would be really thankful.. This is really urgent!

Cheers n thx!

OK, just asked my husband (who's in the bath, no less - what a good man for helping me out!) He said that first you have to rip the dvd into an avi file.

Then you have to "break up" the avi file (which is huge) into two parts so that you can burn it to disc.

Then, you need to use a program called 'nero vision' (this will break up the avi files for you automatically) - then burn to disc. To burn, say, an average feature length film, you'll need 2 discs to do this. We haven't ripped/burned a film in ages - but from what I remember, the process took a good long time.

The site I'm about to recommend is a pirate site, but you can find a lot of burning/ripping programs to at least it'll get you started. To the best of my knowledge, there are not many (if at all) free programs for doing what you need to do. So here you go:

I'm sure GLAKO will come on here and tell you "you shoulda gotta Mac!!" ;)

Good luck trying to get around that EMI copy protection. :) You're lucky if the player even recognises the disc, let alone rip it.

It's terrible when you actually buy a cd/dvd and can't even play it properly because the anti-copy encoding is so strict. Luckily it only affects me when i'm trying to create soundtracks on me ol' Xbox, but I know other people that can't even play them on their stereos!

Damn those pirates for forcing record companies to get even more evil.

Mx chemical is lying Jack, he auditioned for the part, but they said he was to fat and he turned up to the set naked with burrito sauce dripping off his chin.

^ we've got this new logo on the back sleeve of all new cd's being printed here in the United States. Even new pressings of older records. Do you guys over yonder have anything like this on the backs of your cd cases? It's more a threatening looking gov't logo than anything else, but I was just wondering.

I have a few copy controlled cd's that I'd like to make copies of so I can take them with me in the car. That way if the copied ones melt (which can happen out here in California) get scratched, get stolen, etc., there are no tears shed because my original copies are safely at home.

It would also be nice to copy songs from some of these cd's so I can make mixes.

You're probably right, EBW. It's been ages since my hubby ripped a dvd. Me, even longer - back when I did, I was pretty much just looking over the shoulder anyway. ;)

I did a quick search on the net, and there are all sorts of tutorials out there for Jack to reference if he gets stuck. If I'm not mistaken, some mpeg formats actually lessen the quality of the picture - not too sure about avi. Good thing I'm not a techie! But I think if he got any dvd ripper, like nero vision, the conversion would be automatic - he probably could choose the mpeg option over avi, since all he wants to do with the vcd is watch it in his computer and not a dvd player.

And thanks, iggy. It's good to know someone reads all the crap I spout. I'm the first to admit I'm longwinded most the time!!

We got the same copy protected label the punk mentioned, here in this country.. but u can copy all those cds too using any of the regular softwares. Just nero n a few others fail sometimes. I have backup copies of most of my most played originals.. n i can tell u whirly it IS a good idea.

I wouldn't actually mind ripping it to avi also.. but then i'd have to play it on my pc. I want to play it my vcd player plugged into my tv.. so gonna try mpeg first. Lesse.. will try n do anythin n everythin possible over the weekend.. will keep ya guys updated.. big thx for the help all.. :)

You chem bros n sis' rock! ;)

I guess it is there to stop the average moron copying it and sharing it to other people around the world. People with an intermediate knowledge of software can rip them easily.

Exactly, if all else fails, you can just play a cd and record the actual sound through the audio out to audio in on a PC. Or just play the cd on your PC and record the sound in Cooledit or some other software.

Also, Cooledit works great for recording live streaming

As has been said, there's nothing wrong with personal backups of music you've purchased!
