Then you have to "break up" the avi file (which is huge) into two parts so that you can burn it to disc.
Then, you need to use a program called 'nero vision' (this will break up the avi files for you automatically) - then burn to disc. To burn, say, an average feature length film, you'll need 2 discs to do this. We haven't ripped/burned a film in ages - but from what I remember, the process took a good long time.
The site I'm about to recommend is a pirate site, but you can find a lot of burning/ripping programs to at least it'll get you started. To the best of my knowledge, there are not many (if at all) free programs for doing what you need to do. So here you go:
www.suprnova.com
I'm sure GLAKO will come on here and tell you "you shoulda gotta Mac!!" ;)

Meanwhile if anyone's got any direct links or reccos for stuff they know works for sure on win server 2003 or xp, please let me know. Am really desperate on this one.. Finally got my hands on the chems' 10 yrs of dvd, n don't have access to a dvd rom drive currently.. Paid a truckload for the dvd in my country, but can't see it.. :(
A friend's got the gear.. But it'd like to be able to have a vcd copy so I can play it my system at home? am dying to see those live parts.. N the interviews.. Just gotta see the videos.. Some of which I hadn't seen before? n they'r insane to see the least.. Out of control for example.. :)
Hope some more people respond with names of stuff that they know works for this purpose..

It's terrible when you actually buy a cd/dvd and can't even play it properly because the anti-copy encoding is so strict. Luckily it only affects me when i'm trying to create soundtracks on me ol' Xbox, but I know other people that can't even play them on their stereos!
Damn those pirates for forcing record companies to get even more evil.

Good luck trying to get around that EMI copy protection. :) You're lucky if the player even recognises the disc, let alone rip it.

^ we've got this new logo on the back sleeve of all new cd's being printed here in the United States. Even new pressings of older records. Do you guys over yonder have anything like this on the backs of your cd cases? It's more a threatening looking gov't logo than anything else, but I was just wondering.
I have a few copy controlled cd's that I'd like to make copies of so I can take them with me in the car. That way if the copied ones melt (which can happen out here in California) get scratched, get stolen, etc., there are no tears shed because my original copies are safely at home.
It would also be nice to copy songs from some of these cd's so I can make mixes.
<*snip* a bunch of pre-caffeinated ramblings about the current state of affairs regarding the record industry that nobody will read anyway>

I did a quick search on the net, and there are all sorts of tutorials out there for Jack to reference if he gets stuck. If I'm not mistaken, some mpeg formats actually lessen the quality of the picture - not too sure about avi. Good thing I'm not a techie! But I think if he got any dvd ripper, like nero vision, the conversion would be automatic - he probably could choose the mpeg option over avi, since all he wants to do with the vcd is watch it in his computer and not a dvd player.
And thanks, iggy. It's good to know someone reads all the crap I spout. I'm the first to admit I'm longwinded most the time!!

Also, Cooledit works great for recording live streaming
As has been said, there's nothing wrong with personal backups of music you've purchased!
