mippio, Screamadelica is one of my all time favorite records, too! I just love it - it's just one of those timeless pieces for me.
I finally got to see them play when they came to the States supporting XTRMNTR. They hadn't played the States in ages, so when they came to Los Angeles there was no way I was going to pass up a chance to see them do their thing live.
Plus, I never got to see the Stone Roses, nor My Bloody Valentine - and it was so cool seeing Mani and Kevin Sheilds on board! Like throwing one rock and hittin 3 birds!
Anyway, it was a nice small venue - the House of Blues and it was pretty much packed. Me and my crew got there nice and early and got a spot right up front, up against the stage. All was going well but the crowd was swelling and there was a mess of ugly jock/frat boys/whatever the fuck they were, slamming about the floor, knocking people around like some half assed punk show. Guess they thought they were onto Blink 182, not the Primals and I seriously doubt they even knew who the Primals were. Pissed me off. Anyway, I made it up til the end of Swastika Eyes and headed upstairs where I could at least enjoy the music without fearing for my life and without fear of my husband winding up behind bars for glassing the next punk that decided to slam into me.
I stood near a roped off area, the VIP section, and looked ahead and realized I was looking at the back of Rod Stewart's perfectly coiffed and frosted hair he's had since the mid 80's - but hey, he was with two stunning blondes who were young enough to be his daughters and he was playing air guitar and singing along, so it was all good. I looked over to my left and saw Billy Idol and his bored looking wife/girlfriend - and Billy Idol was totally enthralled. It made me happy, because I was around people who were digging the music.
They played mostly material from XTRMNTR, and only did one song from Screamadelica - Higher Than The Sun. And it was so brilliant but I guess that was the cue from the ignorant crowd to use the toilets. But that's OK, I loved every second of the song.
After the show, I went out to the patio to have a smoke and saw an old coworker who was a big Stone Roses fan and who loved the Primals too - and she was loving life because she was proudly wearing a backstage pass so she could finally meet her idols! :)
Once out front, we decided to kick it (and inhale more cancer sticks) in front of the venue because the parking lot was jammed and we wanted to wait a while for the crowd to die down. I talked to a couple of 20-something girls and asked them if they had a good time, and they said, "well, we really don't know who Primal Scream even are... I mean, like, we totally got our tickets for free and like, I don't know... I mean, like, it was an OK show, but like... I don't know, we're gonna go to the Roxbury and dance and stuff and listen to something good." Took me everything not to roll my eyes and chuck my cigarette butt at her feet, or at her plastic cleavage.
Well, it *was* Los Angeles, la la land of the unknowing and tasteless, but hey, if anything, that fruitless conversation was my cue to chat with the friendly young Astralwerks street rep who was enthusiastically loving her job and handing out fliers for Uberzone.
All in all a good night, a great show but I wished the crowd could've been more into it.
That's Los Angeles for you. Tough crowd for a good band like the Primals, to break.

ace story whirlygirl sounds like it was a good gig.
i cant believe its actually like that in LA - people there to be seen and not to listen to the music - i thought that only happened in london!! :)
actually i can well believe it, its just a shame that people that are really into the music cant get tickets to these events sometimes and the phoneys can.

Los Angeles is known for being the place to see and be seen. It goes both ways, good and bad. A lot of people rag on the LA scene because it's so hung up and driven by how you look and who you are and where it's "cool" to hang out that week. It really can be such a scene, and it can be frustrating because sometimes - like at a club or a show, you get the vibe that people aren't just letting go and being themselves. I mean, at a show or a club or whatever, what really drives it are the people. And if the people are just there to be seen...
I am reminded of Fatboy Slim, and the refrain, "they know what is what but they don't know what is what. They just strut, what the fuck..."
But it's not really all bad. I don't get up to Los Angeles for many nights out anymore - my life is a lot more mellow and a lot more settled nowadays! I've had some fantastic times... and I have some great memories from many a night out in Los Angeles where the people have been cool and the vibe has been great.
Meh, maybe I'm just gettin' old! ;)

^ Holy shit, that's a bummer, chem'd up. I wonder what the whole story is to telling that other band to fuck off - I wonder what brought him to that point, or was it just the come-down speaking?
I know it's here say and gossip, but if Bobby Gillespie is really like that, you know... that makes me sad if it's affected his life to the point where he doesn't feel comfortable in the outside world. I just don't like to hear of anyone who lives thier life like that, especially someone who is responsible for something that gives me joy.
You wouldn't believe how I would worry about Jay Pierce of Spiritualized. Seriously, I'm so goofy that way - I love the music but I know a lot of it wouldn't have been written if he didn't have his demons - but that doesn't mean I didn't worry that one day I'd read he's died because of those demons. But the good news is I heard he's cleaned up his act since becoming a father...
