I realised this as soon as the PTB album came out, but have only got round to mentioning it on this forum until now....

The melody for Surface To Air is taken from 'A Modern Age' by The Strokes. Anyone else aware of this? because many people view this as one of the best Chemicals tracks ever, but its all thanks to those New Yorkers.

Well, those Nuw Yorkers didn't actually make Surface 2 air, so to say that S2A is amazing because of the strokes is not true.

TPPR is also amazing because of Tom and Ed and not because of the Beatles.

Par Example.

I didn't know this actually, where did u get this info from ?

Yeh i know Jeanie, i'm not saying The Strokes made Surface 2 Air, i just mean that the riff from The Modern Age is blatantly used in Surface To Air. Listen to both tracks and you will see what i mean.

If u listen to Surface to Air u can hear what riff i mean, very clearly from 2 mins 07 secs. And 13 secs into the Strokes track. Trust me. I'm not saying it was Tom n Ed's intention, maybe it was, but they're almost identical.

He is right it is The Strokes, but that's what the Chems are all about, taking a sample and giving it a new life in a totally different arrangment. We could spend all day talking about tracks they have sampled, but it's boring and I would rather just listen to the music they made from it.

P.S We could probably go through some of The Strokes tracks and find they have used riffs influenced by other bands. = P

Benjani and london_dust_explosion, you guys bring up a point that's caused some speculation and head scratching (along with head-nodding agreement) in the past about the Strokes connection. I remember there were a few conversations that mentioned the Strokes w/Surface To Air. Still haven't heard the Modern Age (yeah, I know) so I don't have much to add by way of an opinion.

Anyway. For the sake of reading - here's some threads from a while ago:
