Unofficial Music Video

I am an experimental video artist based in Istanbul. I am currently working on creating music videos and recently made a unofficial clip for the track "Left Right"...
What I wanted to learn is if I need a permission from Brothers to upload it on web. I have a vimeo account : vimeo.com/erdalinci and a blog: erdalinci.tumblr.com (this has featured on several art blogs and press like theHuffingtonPost)...
Thanks in advance!

Hey Erdal! If you want to ensure that your video won't get taken down, then you *should* get a license to use the Chemical Brothers music.
However, it is likely that the label that owns the music won't bother you about it. I've seen this unofficial video of Come Inside up on the Internet for ages--four years on YouTube now, apparently--and nothing has come of it. If it gets taken down, you can always ask for permission later.

Not too fast. I've uploaded a mashup-video of Smell Like Teen Spirit / Never Gonna Give You Up on Youtube. Sony or whoever didn't find this funny and let youtube lock the video. Youtube now thinks i'm a bad person and says it is not done with deleting the video by myself (it is still there but nobody can see it) - i also cannot upload any video anymore. I still can use my account to like videos or write comments, but i'm not allowed to upload videos anymore.

That's ridiculous. When I was doing the Live Chemicals Countdown for Don't Think, youtube blocked the Hey Boy Hey Girl/The Test video in about 22 countries including my own. I did some mild legal research, and apparently discovered that a record label has no copyright claims over bootlegged live recorded material, and they are perfectly legal to distribute as long as the band has not relinquished their consent to be recorded. Youtube merely autoblocks stuff based on the title and tags, not the nature of the video.

That really sucks to hear that YouTube is enforcing strict standards with users uploading copyrighted music for "first time offenders," so to speak. I can understand an individual being prohibited from uploading after repeat "offenses," (once again, I hesitate to use that word because I think the over-enforcement of copyright is bullshit) but to be prohibited from uploading anything else simply because one of your uploads contained infringing content is rather outrageous.

You're correct. Copyrights extend to the compositions of songs and the sound recordings of songs. Interestingly, whoever the bootlegger is actually owns the copyright to the recording of the bootleg, though it's unlikely that it will receive very strong copyright protection. I've taken an entire semester long class on Copyright in law school. If you'd like to know more, feel free to ask.

Yes, that's the whole show. We get to see stuff for free and the ad companies pay YouTube to put ads on the content. YouTube will talk to the copyright holders to receive a license allowing them to keep the content accessible, and prohibit anyone from being sued because of said uploaded content.
