yes i agree.
they'r going back to roots in some way but as million times better producers and sound innovators. it's magic how they keep reinventing the same fuckin wheel.

Usually the spambots can be stopped by PMing them as soon as you see one online. But it's a pretty big problem we have here.

After NYE, I'm going to have to opt for 8. When I heard them both on Tong's show for the first time I was more inclined towards nine because it 's so raw and tribal but 8 is just...
It's one of those tunes that brings you up and up, like Temptation freewheeling into Star Guitar during the live sets. You're nearly trying to jump for the roof to grab the song as it climbs and let it haul you up even further. I hope they put this into to the new live shows, it just seems to be made for it.

That is such a nice desciption of how the song brings you up to a peak and I really dig the correlation you made between Temptation/Star Guitar and EBW 8. How I wish I could hear this on a massive soundsystem... right now!!
I wonder if we will get a re-worked or slightly tweaked version of EBW 8 (and or 9 for that matter) on the new album... hmmm...

ive still go the bleepy melody swirling round my head :D
I cannot wait until that vinyl arrives in my mailbox in the next week or so. Fucking amazing even on my shitty computer speakers, I can't even fathom what it would sound like in Turnmills or Fabric or at Coachella.

You know what I really dig? It's those silences just after the bass riff. I dunno why, but those silences speak volumes to me. I just feel that they add to it, like it needs a break. Hard to explain. :-//
I think that's one of the things that has really become a weapon in the Chems' production arsenal the last couple of years: space and time. Not to slight the earlier work in the least, but it is very busy, very everything-but-the-kitchen-sink and it is still stunning. But the more recent work just seems to utilise space and time more efficiently and more touchingly, I find.
Every other band I've ever really fallen for musically I eventually tire of their newer work and stop buying it or wish that I would. I am still so very excited about new Chems work long after I've stopped buying stuff from Corgan, Reznor, Primal Scream, etc.
Bring on Chemical 6.

hmmmm... thinky thinky!! That's a really great observation, both Consumer and Darkstar. The booming bass and those deep silences add a lot of atmosphere. Sort of like a calm before a storm... You are right Tim in that their previous works are very busy, very textured - lots of swirling sound coming together to create these gorgeous lush soundscapes. Their newer work I feel is very textured as well but those layers are more subtle so the high instensity peaks are more prominent especially when the song plunges into those intense, quiet depths. I think that approach was noticably tapped on Come With Us which I consider to be a sort of musical crossroads. The approach has been called "less is more" on here before, but I'm not quite sure if that's the right phrase because there's still loads going on texture-wise in the music. But it's the utilization of space and time that shows how much they have grown (and continue to grow) as musicians and producers. It's a lot for them to be proud of, I think.
As far as other bands go - there is only one other band U2 that has captured my attention for so long. And while I will always love that other band and the music I loved so much then will always have a special place in my heart, that band's more recent offerings of the past... god, 10 years almost... no longer excites me or holds my interest for any length of time. I don't feel this is a fault of the band, I can respect that they are still going strong all these years - but I think we've parted ways is all. When I dig a band, I'm in it for the long haul. I think what's really special about the Chems is that they always seem to be growing and trying new things without ever losing their musical indentity which makes them distinctively Chemical. They can still rock a dancefloor, they can write an epic piece that takes you to another place, they can change your mood at will, and they can still write a gorgeous song that makes you ache. The fact they've done this then and can do this now while paving new ground, challenging themselves and their captive audience (not to forget mentioning they consistantly generate the kind of excitement they do album after album) is impressive if you stop to think. That's a feat not easily accomplished in the musical realm by very many artists.
