I know what he did.
What he did was allow hundreds of thousands, if not millions, to die of AIDs because he forbade his missionaries to teach condom use in Africa.
He helped keep women subservient and indentured to men.
He allowed his minions to shuffle child-fucking priests from one parish to another, and allowed them to destroy the records of their actions so they'd never be brought to justice.
The Vatican bank STILL has gold that the nazi's took from dead jews, and they hid it from those peoples survivors.
I could go on, but I won't.

Becky, I don't mean to come off as harsh or anything. But imagine if someone came to this board when Yassir Arafat died and said "look at all the great things he's done in his lifetime god bless him yada yada" then said, "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all." Me being Jewish you'd better believe I would've had something to say, not all of it nice.
Like every other human being who has died, I hope the Pope has found some peace through his passing. Really, I do. There are so many things that the Pope did that collided with my beliefs and opinions, and for that I have to say I agree with how my husband feels on the points he brought up including one other thing 'stash left out: the Pope's stance on "culture of death" in regards to homosexuals.
On the other hand, I would be a fool to say the Pope didn't do any good in his lifetime... I think perhaps the numbers in St. Peter's square and in the Pope's homeland can attest to that.
And that's all I'm going to say on this matter.

i know it is rather fashionable on this site to be completely dismissive of religion but if there was ever a religous figure worthy of admiration it is Pope John Paul II.
this is a man who chose to stay in his country after the nazis invaded where he studied for the priesthood during the day in secret and then fought with the underground during the night. he openly defied the communists and his success in forcing that governemnt to construct a church in his archdiocese is seen as a turning point in the battle against tyranny there.
as a pope he was able to make changes more far reaching and powerful than any number of popes before him. he is criticised for not allowing women priests but it is forgotten he paved the way for women to take part in almost every other aspect of the mass - an important first step for a change that will be very difficult for the institution. neither was he shy about usuing his election to the papacy as a tool to help his country free itself from soviet domination.
he also didnt back down from a fight. peru was in the midst of a bloody internal war between the government and marxist terrorists when he visited in 1988. the insurgents completely controlled the teeming and dirt poor cities that surrounded lima. weeks before he arrived they murdered a mayor of a city for opposing them and dynamited her body in front of her family as a warning. john paul II went to that city and performed a very public mass anyway.
he is criticised for being unreceptive to the pedophilia scandal under his watch but it is forgotten that his papacy allowed the opening of many long closed church records allowing the investigations to proceed. an action that led to the true size of the crisis to be understood.
more than any other modern pope, john paul II saw far beyond the walls of the vatican and opened the way for dialouge with other faiths. his efforts to build ties with anglicans, muslems, jews and orthodox catholics were unprecidented and simply unthinkable under another pope.
and through his efforts to visit the world's most downtrodden and forgotten peoples, he brought an awareness of the injustice and suffering in the world we most often like to ignore. by simply going these places, he made that impossible.
and while you may not share his personal and theological convictions you must admire his strength is standing by them. a great example is the war in iraq. while dozens of world leaders were being cowed by George W. Bush's strident efforts to go forward with the conflict, JPII had no problem calling him out during an official visit - in public and very plainly.
it is very clear the world is much worse off with the loss of this man today.

That article was obviously written by a catholic, or it might have mentioned that almost all of the 'downtrodden and suffering' parts of the world are that way today because of the Catholic church.

I'm catholic by birth. I don't really know what I am at the moment... I guess I'm agnostic (that's the one where you grab what you like from other religeons yeah?). I don't agree with alot of what the pope has done, but I'd only heard of the negatives of his work and I'm sure alot of other people had as well. That's why I thought I'd post the other side, because it opened my eyes up to who really was a remarkable human being.
The catholic church is still for the most part fucked up, but it has the power to be a helluva lot more fucked up than it is. The fact that this pope managed to change the church that far into being an acceptable organisation is testament to him as a person. I hope the next pope can continue to change the church into an organisation that helps more people than it hinders. Because they have a long way to go.
