hehehe.

It's been a while since I listened to Push The Button from start to finish. But when I have shuffle going and a song from this album comes on, I get a warm and fuzzy feeling. 2005 was a great year for me personally, I met a lot of fantastic people from here, life was pretty sweet in general. This album reminds me of only the good times.

I also listened to PTB recently, still a good listen. Its interesting how some songs get better with time and Hold Tight London is very much one of those for me.

Hold Tight London reminds me of Whirly, I think because when we met she described how it felt and the relevence of it to her trip.

I think PTB gets a bad rap sometimes as being their "pop" album, what with Galvanize and Believe and all the hip hop tracks... personally I think it's divided evenly between that material (which is pretty excellent by the way) and some of their most emotionally intense work. It's easy to forget sometimes that this was also the album that brought us tracks like Hold Tight London, Close Your Eyes and Surface To Air.

Tomorrow, I listen to Push the Button. I will say it is, as of now, my least favorite album. But that's like saying I had a really bad orgasm... Am I right? Am I right?

I usually deal with the same kinda wrap from people because honestly, I fucking love We Are the Night, and sometimes I entertain myself by going around reading all of the shite reviews of that album and thinking to myself, "man, what a bunch of pompous pricks". Pitchfork kept talking about how it was a formula that had been done too many times by the brothers. Build up, guest vocal track, and then closing banger. Okay, fine... you can have that, but did you even listen to the songs? Did you even stop and let "The Pills Won't Help You Now" wash over you? One of my absolute favorite tracks by the way. Did you stop and relax and listen to the psychedelic subtleties of Das Spiegel, or the build of Burst Generator? Did you put on a pair of headphones and let the Klaxons and the Brothers grind you into an Adrenaline filled fury that led you to randomly pumping your first on the train platform at rush hour? Or shall I even bring up the funky explosiveness of Saturate, or the eruption of happiness that fills the entire room when We Are the Night is playing? It is of my humbled and musically educated and open minded opinion, that if you can listen to those tracks and still have the balls to debate the musical prowess of the Brothers, you don't deserve a job in the industry.

My point is, is that We Are the Night and Push the Button came under similar scrutiny, but We Are the Night is engraved into my psyche and was the beginning of a new era for the Brothers for me. I was living on the West Coast and I was an Adult, and was finally able to see the Brothers live. After 14 years of wondering what the hell a show would be like. That album was when I started being able to tell people, "yeah, it's an obsession. Sorry that none of your favorite artists have been able to stay together your entire life. You should come to this show with me before you miss your opportunity".

That shit was deep for me, as I'm sure Push the Button is for some of you. I will have to listen to it at work tomorrow to celebrate this chat. Now if only I could find a nug to sneak in the office with me.

Yeah, I remember both Push The Button and We Are The Night came under a lot of scrutiny out there in interwebland. Push The Button, I think more so. Some of it was very hard to read. It was hard not to get defensive. But in the end it's just opinions. The Chems couldn't have gotten to where they are now without paving their own way first. There's a lot to be said for that and their endurance.

As time goes on it becomes harder and harder to pick a favorite album. Picking and choosing songs is one thing but whole bodies of work is another. It's been fascinating hearing this evolution and each album is special for me. Time is Perspective's game-player and game-changer. I'd have to say We Are The Night ranks up there. Way up there. It's intensely personal, it has been very cathartic to me and is the one album out of their whole catalog that means many different things now than it did during the first year it was out.

Whirly, that shit is deep. Faaaaacebook status update! (said in excitedly flamboyant voice)

I may even tweet it. Maybe Tom will vocal it on "Even Further", their next album. Or maybe they'll save it for, "Further than you thought was possible". Or maybe, that's the connection they wanted us to draw when they titled their last album, "Further".

Anyways, well said.
