on the whole i hate cover versions. i think my hate has come from the pop world. making talentest groups sing old cover versions cos it cheaper and safer than an original production. i'm looking at the likes of westlife and steps who have made a career out of being telentless wanker who dug up old crap tunes and up dated them to make them more... modern crap tunes!! my current hate is no doubt's cover of talk talk's 'it's my life'. the original was a fine tune. but no doubt have made a carbon copy of it, even using 80's sounding synth lines. whats the point of making this??

it's not always like this. some people, usually the ones who actually have some talent can take a tune and totally rework it, add their spin or take it somewhere else. thus justifying doing the cover. i suppose the greatest cover version in my collection for me is the happy mondays 'step on' a rework of john kongos 'he's gonna step on you again'

now on to my point. the chemical brothers have never recorded a cover version to the best of my knowledge. i know they borrow new order's temptation synth lines for the live show circa come with us tour. but it was not a full on cover version. so i throw down the gauntlet for a little bit of fun. suggest a track that the chems should cover, if it needs a vocalist suggest some one.

so here goes my suggestion. new order - blue monday vocals bobbie gillespie. it might be a bit of an obvious choice. but its got that beat that i know the chems could take to another level. bobbie would be the obvious choice for vocal, i'm probably biased after the vocal of bobbie and bernard in out of control.

wolfhsim-in time

fatboyslim wepon of choice

I think chems re-doing wepon of choice or mabey adding to it would be super ideal sorry I dont have much knowledge or say in chems "music" Like how it should be done etc.. but I say my say ( make sence or no) ? Whirlygirl said it better once.. :?

I do agree that some cover versions fall flat on their face. But for every flop there are certainly hits. I think Pet Shop Boys 'You were always on my mind' cover is extremely good, with a nice pop-electro melody sweeping other the slightly vocoded vocals. I think in terms of dance music, remixes are the cover versions. In a sense, when the Chems do a remix, they pull the original to pieces and really inject their sound, thus they can be justified as cover versions.

Maybe Coldplay's Clocks would be a good cover, (already officially remixed by the amazing Ryksopp), I could see/hear the Chems distorting that piano sample :D . Maybe Burgess or Orton for vocals :-? 8) . I only really suggest Clocks 'cos it's a strong record.

Blue Monday shouldn't be touched.

I reckon they shouldn't cover anything at all, ever! What happened to being original! I guess being original doesn't make money.

you say that i-punk, but surely that conflicts with what you have said in the asleep from day remix thread!! then again maybe that should go for me too!!!

i know we talked about blue monday last week. but new order have kept releasing (poor) remixes of that track. only a few bands could ever better that tune. i think the chems are one of those bands who could do it!!

as i said though. this tread is just a bit of fun. there is no way i could see the chems covering this. they probably see this tune as sacred

Yeah, I realised that I was contradicting myself as I was composing my post. I guess I see some tracks as perfection, and an attempt to remix it would be a sin. So what I am saying now, after thinking about it is that you are right on what you said about Asleep from day.

This is a bit of fun, i'll come back to this thread once i've collected all my thoughts.

Ah yes, the subject of cover songs. I've said my piece about them before and I agree with everyone who says that covers can be good so long as the passion of the cover artist flows through in the song they're covering, without compromising the integrity of the original.

No Doubt's cover of It's My Life falls way short - sorry, but it seriously lacks. Never been much a fan of Gwen Stefani's voice, it works well with No Doubt material but it sounds so out of place on the cover. It just does not work.

A good cover I was thinking of the other day was Cowboy Junkies Blue Moon and Sweet Jane. I love the woman's voice, if you listen to Cowboy Junkies "Trinity Sessions" you get a feel of where Hope Sandoval might have gotten her inspiration.

But anywho - back to real topic at hand... and speaking of Lou Reed.

I think it would be interesting if the Chems covered Street Hassle by Lou Reed. Simple Minds did a great cover of this song in the 80's, lots of reverant vocals with the reverb turned up, and that's what turned me on to Lou Reed. It's a great song but it's about a prostitute who happens to be named Matilda. I don't think Tom would go for that. ;) I think it would be interesting to have the words turned around a bit, and have a woman singing. Beth Orton could really pull this off, I think it would be cool.

There's a U2 song I really like, off the record October. It's called "Rejoice" and it's a very simple song, no frills, but a simple rat-ta-tat drum pattern and echoing guitar line that reminds me of rain twinkling down. The vocals are just the word "rejoice" sung at intervals. Since the song is simple, that means there could be room for an altered electronic goodies a la the Spiritualized/Chems remix of IThinkI'mInLove. Just a few things here and there. I do NOT think the die hard U2 fans who hold everything U2 to be sacred would go for that, though. It would cause an outrage.

Hmm. The tune House of the Rising Sun (another one they say that has to do with prostitutes - there's that porn connection again, are you listening Biff?!) but it's so cool, very dark. The Animals made it popular, and Bob Dylan did too. Great song, the organs add a psychadelic warm feel and a new version could work if it's done well.

Now that I got some song ideas, I don't know who could do the vocals!

I think there has beem to much reliance in the music industry to rely on cover versions to boost a artists profile and sales and not contribute anything new to the song at all, such examples of this have been louises cover of the steelers wheel classic stuck in the middle with you.Howeverthere have been very good cover versions such as the david arnold project with the james bond theme tunes as the cover versions enhanced some of the songs greatly such as ohmss by the propellerheads.the music industry should wake up and realise that these songs should be done by people that respect the songs and not to give these songs to bland pop acts who ruin songs with their ineptitude.

Dare I suggest it...

The Model by Kraftwerk. I have always felt this song can be developed further, Kraftwerk seem reluctant to do this (fair enough, its a classic). I think the chems could take the track to the 'next level'.

The model was allready covered by Zoot Woman.

Stuart Price a.k.a. Jacques lu Cont a.k.a. Les Rythmes Digitales is 1/3 of Zoot Woman.

So maybe a other kraftwerk track would be more original to cover.

I'd like to hear them do a version of Rob D: Clubbed to Death. This song is already perfect, and I don't think it's possible to improve on it. A hair raising tune.
