What Tom thinks about those synths :

Quote

@ChemBros I'm about to buy my first analog synth, what do you think of these 3 toys: Doepfer Dark Energy, Vermona Mono Lancet, Mopho?

Quote

@dontlistenwhile not tried those..i would hunt down an old roland juno106.dcos but has analogue filter.used on all our albums, most versatile

The mopho (tabletop version) sounds great but I'm affraid it won't meet my needs since there are very few knobs which is not user friendly at all as you mentioned Ben_J. Plus, I would like to avoid using a software to edit the sound.

The Doepfer looks amazingly good, though it might not be complex enough!

Do you still own a juno106 Ben_J? What do you think of it? I've heard it is quite pricey when it comes to maintaining it in good condition.

Here I am, on phone, no studio pics. You should consider getting a synth that is pretty up front in work flow. Juno 106 is good, dark energy is good, spectral audio Neptune is rad but costs a lil more but has the specs of a grungy minimoog. Also, Arturia Minibrute is coming out and looks amazing for the price. The problem with synths like microkorg or mopho is while they're great, you should have a deep understanding of the flow of synths (osc/filters/lfo/etc) before you dive into screens & sunscreens. Just my humble $.02

The tetra sounds pretty great as well! Plus it's a polyphonic synth.

the link is fucked. I guess it's the MiniBrute. It looks really great, and its sound seems pretty unique

well i've only tried a poly, not a mono, but was just going off what I'd read
meant to be similar design, just more voices
I believe they came out at the same time, and often refered to as 'sister synths' etc

anyway, aside from all that, the Poly-Six is lovely

The design is not the same at all, the Mono/Poly is much more versatile than the polysix. Two lfos, sync, cross modulation, etc...

The link should work fine now!

It sounds great, but it's still a damn monophonic synth. The most annoying thing is that you can't save you presets :(
The knobs and faders don't send any midi signal as well...

Polyphonic analog synths are really expensive. You will find old affordable ones, like the Juno or event the Polysix, but old synth also means unpredictable and sometimes unreliable synth.
If you want a new polyphonic analog synth then I think the best way to go is the Tetra. Any other recent poly synth will cost more than 1500€, and most old "legendary" polyphonic synth will cost more than 5000€.

As for me, the Minibrute could well be my next synth :)

It just sounds marvelous

You don't have to choose between a synth and your wife

Good to see Arturia making the step from software to hardware!

Next sunday I will probably be the proud owner of a MC 808 groovebox. I loved fooling around in ableton but it would be better for my productivity/creativity to be away from the pc as far as possible. :)

Don't you get wedding presents? Why not open a whishlist? Write: "In case you plan on buying me a technical device, please, get me a synth instead of a toaster!"

Well a toaster is not worth 500€

So I have been looking at the minibrute and the mopho keyboard for quite a long time now.

It seems like the mopho is much more versatile and complete than the minibrute.
On the other hand it has fewer knobs and faders than the minibrute. What do you think?

Just a random demo of the mopho's abilities : http://www.youtube.c...h?v=f3yFj9pKGoQ

The Mopho is really complete (on the paper anyway), with lots and lots of modulations everywhere. The Minibrute on the other hand puts his money on original features (brute factor, ultrasaw, ...) that gives it a unique sound. It's up to you, but I would say get the Minibrute because it doesn't have anything in hidden menus, and that's a good thing for a first synth, it's a good way of learning your way around how those synth work

Well, the minibrute costs 500€ which is about the price of a second hand mopho =/
I use Reason whose "layout" is mostly based on analog gear. Eventhough I have never put my hands on a real analog synth I think it won't be such a big deal to get used to the mopho!

I've just bought a second hand mopho keyboard! It feels so great to tweak some analog sounds :) I am off to practice my synthesis skills haha!
