I'm feeling scared by something :

I've always thought that the Chems did their mixes with vinyles. Now, they play Meat Beat Manifesto's "Cutman" in Live At The Social, as well as they play "Mars Needs Women" in Brothers Gonna Work It Out. Both tracks were released only on the CD edition of the album "Armed Audio Warfare", whereas the LP version doesn't include them.

LP version => http://www.discogs.c...e/release/59729

CD version => http://www.discogs.c.../release/230516

Did they succeed in finding those tracks in vinyle (if they did, I want to know where), or do they mix with...CDs ? :(

This isn't an existential question.

I also don't know the answer to the question.

They got some plastic and etched in the waveform of those songs by hand

I, also, do not know. Also, don't worry about if they used CD's. Worry if they start using this:

But Vinyle > CD !!!

I hear some scratches in Live At THe Social, so I think they used vinyules, but the first track (after introduction) doesn't exist in vinyle...

I want to know ! Every great DJ HAS to use vinyles !

"Mars Needs Women" can be found on the "GOD OD" single (see Ben's link above). Cutman however, was never released on vinyl. It was cut from the "Armed Audio Warefare" pressings to save on money and to fit the tracks in nice. This was because Jack was in the middle of a lawsuit with TVT Records for not receiving his money due. I saw that in an interview from 1996 a long time ago.

It wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that Jack had several copies of it on vinyl or that it was pressed on vinyl for a select few. A perfect example of that is MBM's "Eccentric Objects" EP. Although more commonly heard of because he made a big deal of it being a collectors item when it came out, Jack has lot's of small hidden gems.

Lol, on vynil, cd or in mp3 music is music...

When you hear the "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" mix or "Comfront Your Demon" it's an evidence that they are done with the help of computer... Maybe ProLogic.

Man, TVT screwed over Nine Inch Nails, too. Why don't we hear anything -good- about record labels?

For a non-live mix, it doesn't matter if theu yse a computer or not. But it would be a pity if they didn't use vinyles in their live mixes :(

We can also assume that CD Mixes were done on a computer, to have perfect transitions, good sound, etc

Plus, mixing with CDs is nothing to be ashamed of. CD turntables have great features and there are DJs such as Fake Blood or James Zabiela that have great skills with them.

As for the vinyles, back when there was no CD turntables, artists used dubplates to play unreleased stuff, bootlegs they did, etc.

It's much easier and cheaper now, because duplates costed money and were often bad quality vinyles, therefore couldn't be spinned forever

Yeah, that's what I meant, for a non-live mix (BGWIO...), we don't care if they used a computer but for a live one, th'at's better tu use vinyl ! :) Because of the legend it represents... (ok, a lot of talent is required for mixing with it, but the Chems do have so)

Anyway, I agree, using CD's isn't ashaming, besides, being able to mix well, whatever you use, is, in itself, something great.

But such big DJ's complete the myth they are by using vinyl ;) (Back to black ! Vinyl powaa ! Not dead ! ...).

mixing with vinyls today is a pain in the ass. Vinyls are expensive, hard to find, a pain in the ass to carry, they get used faster than digital supports, they're more fragile, they do not let you the freedom that digital formats offer... I really see no advantage today in using vinyls.

Actually, a lot of big DJs use CD decks -- some even exclusively.

Of course, certain DJs, especially those with a long history, such as the Chemical Brothers, will be using a lot of both due to the breadth of their record collections. I'm confident, however, that a lot of DJs would like to consolidate their music on CD if possible. In some contexts, nevertheless, vinyl arouses a distinct atmosphere and reaction.

Additionally, mixing with CDs provides to DJs with inclinations toward production a great avenue for testing how a track plays out or functions within the space of a club. (Or, you know, wherever)

Ah, the vinyl vs. cd vs. digital mixing argument.

Using vinyl is nice in the sense it produces these lovely warm tones when played. And there's the showmanship factor. It's impressive to see dj's kickin it old skool and using vinyl. But if the technology is there for the taking and new techniques are being explored, then I feel dj's embracing these aspects of expanding their dj'ing capabilities should be commended. Music evolves in all sorts of ways. I don't know jack shit about dj'ing or mixing or any of that so I probably don't know what I'm talking about. :P But these are just some surfacy observations of mine... If the end result sounds good, if you're dancing and having a good time, if the dj is getting off on what he's doing and seeing the crowd react - who cares?

As far as vinyl goes, I was listening to the radio the other day and there's apparently a surge in vinyl sales in Los Angeles which has resulted in some new record shops opening! After seeing my previous place of employment go down the shitter, I think this news is exciting and it's certainly a trend I can get behind! :)

Here's an article to back up what I heard on the radio, for what it's worth:
