Next month I was going to do a sort of DJ sort of live electronic gig for a buddy of mine's art show exhibit thing (he wanted me to play with my band which I thought might be overkill). So I was going to put together about 90 - 120 minutes of stuff and run it through Ableton alongside some of my synths using other artist's songs. The best analogy I could come up with would be like if the Chemical Brothers (or more accurately SMD) did a live show of other artist's songs.
Anyways, I come to the end of the line for ideas at the moment of what to play for the set so I was wondering if you kind folks might have good ideas for songs/artists/or albums suitable for such an occasion? Basically, I want the music to not be too over the top in regards to being fast and loud, considering the context it'll be in, but at the same time I'm not going to play insipid hipster down-tempo, and being more easy going, as opposed to emotional and dark... So sort of finding the middle ground between.
Here's an idea of what I have thus far, hopefully this will guide ideas of where I'm going.
Massive Attack - Protection / Radiation Ruling the Nation (while I'll be playing with a 303 synth)

I think I'm in love (cb remix) -> Tomorrow Never Knows -> Sun (Caribou) -> Sport Brother (Animal Collective)

The first part of the set will be slower tempo and build on that, to the point of the list above.

Mucho thanks!

Hmmm. I agree a full fledged band might be a bit much for an art exhibit which tends to be a more intimate gathering. I'd think you would probably want to help create an atmosphere around the art, so you've got a good start I think. What type of art is it? Are there any pictures of the work available to give an idea of what type of art your music choices would be accompanying?

I'd go with:

Leftfield - Swords
Fatboy Slim - The Weekend Starts Here
Simian Mobile Disco - Believe
Groove Armada - Chicago
Radiohead - Backdrifts (off topic: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=aP8_hUXgK_U ) (Jesus Christ, great editing, and Ellen Page jailbait ftw)
Radiohead - Like Sardines in a Tin Can
Air - Surfing on a Rocket
Daft Punk - Fresh

Those are all tracks which came to mind when listening to the tracks you already have going. Hopefully they help.

Haha, I mix Backdrifts in with Protection in the middle of the song, glad we're on the same page.
His art is abstract, collage-like, really creative stuff, so the audience will be in our age bracket, certainly no Thomas Kincaid exhibit. Here's one he did for an album cover to get an idea.

So the music I have chosen so far has been more summer kind of stuff to considering the character of the art and the fact that the set will be done around then.

Well, here are few songs that come to mind:
EDIT: :x So, this has become way more songs than I meant to list--I hope it gets the ideas stirring, at the very least!

Something from the new Gorillaz (Plastic Beach or Empire Ants?)
Ratatat - Wildcat
Bentleys Rhythm Ace - Bentley's Gonna Sort You Out
A song from the new Goldfrapp album?
Any Fourtet song that might be fitting
Benga - B4 The Dual and/or Someone 20
Deadmau5 - Strobe or 16th Hour
Rodrigo y Gabriela - Hora Zero (Much more summery w/ acoustic guitars, but it has good beat!)
The Chemical Brothers - Surrender
Modeselektor - Let Your Love Grow
Santigold - You'll Find a Way (Switch and Sinden remix)
Cassius - Youth Speed Trouble Cigarettes (Maybe?)
Myagi - Staring at the Sun
Something by Orbital?
Ellen Alien & Apparat - Sleepless
M83 - Coulers or Skin Of The Night
Fischerspooner - Get Confused
The Prodigy - Stand Up
Hot Chip - We Have Love
Rex The Dog - I Look Into Midair
Does It Offend You Yeah? - We Are Rockstars
Ladytron - Burning Up or Runaway
Sansura - Radio Pamir

Nice, thanks for the suggestion. Funny thing is I actually have Empire Ants on the list as well of things I'm going to play.
But there are quite a few here that I don't think I've heard.

Jesus, I've sat here for a while trying to think of songs that could match the ones Biff already has in mind, and its tough. Those tracks are so well produced its hard not to pair them with anything but with other Chemical Brother tunes. For what it's worth here is a small list of tunes that put me in the same type of mood as the mentioned tracks:

Cornelius - 'Wataridori'
http://www.youtube.c...h?v=3zWSf7bIsrg

Asobi Seksu - 'Transparence'
http://www.youtube.c...h?v=XZUnLCM4R0Q

and for something a little old

Timebox - 'Gone Is The Sad Man'

Off the top of my head (and on the go) I was thinking that Kindness Swinging Party tune that mippio re-introduced us to would be nice. Also Atlas Sounds Walkabout is a nice tune, very summery feel. Throw in some old school Primal Scream, just about anything from Screamadelica will do ;)

I was going to use swinging party cause it's simple and synths could be added to it live.
I would put saturate after sport brother because the two mix well (

Glad, I at least started out on the same level that you were thinking. I can send you some of the tracks if it is difficult find them (eg. the Sansura track is pretty hard to find info on, etc.). I think you could do something really cool with the Rodrigo y Gabriela track by playing some synths alongside it! Like, that would kickass.

I suppose these might be considered somewhat oldies but goodies, but they just sprang to mind:

Stone Roses Fools Gold, and Underworld River of Bass

Well it isn't a great selection, but it's good enough to find common stuff. The tricky part is a lot of them if I want to extract segments via noise cancellation I have to get the CD's, which I'm all for, but just makes the hunt more difficult... They didn't have Kindness, so guess the internets better not do wrong.

i reckon you're thinking on the right lines, it def needs to be atmospheric and melodic rather than banging.

I like those tracks Mipps, especially Metro Area, that would be a really good one. The two things I am really looking for are mainly stuff that kinda blurs the area of indie rock / electronic (ie Caribou, Animal Collective, Hot Chip), considering my audience might not be into me playing acid house (though if I do another gig its gonna be oriented towards that), and also for the music to be easy for re-editing and adding synths to, which is why Metro Area is a good one for both.
