Okay--I read everything everyone was writing/saying about the album and it made me skeptical. My contrarian nature was aroused, and I was prepared to give the music more deference, maybe even find something in it that everyone else didn't and wrap my arms around it.
But I was largely unmoved***.
Daft Punk made an album today that should have come out in the 70s. Would have sounded amazing then.
And yeah, I get it--EDM is dead, yadda yadda yadda, whatever. That's an easy one--typical French response to the mainstream. That's fine, and it can be summed up in a sentence. I just did. Sort of.
I respect the fact that they made a true artist album, but it's not an album that I'll be listening to. Weird that I keep going back to Homework and Discovery--hopefully one day there will be a DP album that I'll listen to in full alongside those two.
I'll give it a few more listens, see if I can't still try to find something in it that's worthwhile. But right now, there are a bunch of old musicians nodding their heads in their music studios listening to this album on vinyl talking about how there are two French kids out there that finally did it right.
***There is one exception: Contact. That track is amazing. Way to go DP.
