So I'm sitting in the garage changing the oil on my motorcycle with my dad. A song is playing on the radio. My dad loves him some classic rock and has a pretty good ear. He likes Led Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd, Creedence Clearwater... can't stand hair metal... Blah blah.

Anyways, a song is on the radio and he says, "These clown asses say the same thing over and over again for 5 minutes and made millions. Who am I to judge, but I don't think they were making the money because of the music."

"Who is this Dad?" I ask.

"Kiss" he replies.

I already discussed this in a blog I posted a month and some change ago, but it was beautiful to have it happen in real time. My dad had Kiss, and I have Daft Punk. "Get Lucky" is arrogant and obnoxious, just like "Lick it up".

Clown makeup and leather in muted black and silver colors doesn't look too far off from black leather jackets or sequined suit jackets and robot masks.

At least they made Homework and Discovery and put on a hell of a live show.

I only enjoyed 2.5 songs, Give Life Back to Music, Doin' it Right and a 50% of Georgio By Moroder. What a disappointment...

Well, this is something new. Some funky moments in there but overall I don't like it.

Contact, Doin it right and get lucky are okay tracks.

LOL. I think he might mean... Accessible music to please people who still want to be cool and who have money to burn perhaps?

Or People who have money to burn with no taste.
Come out from the cold and into the setting sun. It's where it all began for me (not in Afrika), like it was out of control. Then after that life was sweet. So dream on into the pioneer skies of the fourteenth century and rise from the sunshine underground.

Its so frustrating to listen to. There are genuine moments of greatness with all the sound effects going on in parts (my favourite parts of the songs) but then it gets all cheese. Its like listening to your least favourite Air album. Or an Air cover band.

just listened it

it's definitely NOT an electronic music album

I'd put it on experimental funk

fans of Homework and Humand After All will be disapointed

fans of Discovery will be...well,they will think "where is the drum machine?"

as for me I am used to also listen to Frank Zappa,so Random Access Memories is not suprising, not revolutionnary,
perhaps a bit lazy for a duo that gave us Da Funk,Alive...etc...

BUT it is nevertheless interesting

I just prefer the radio edit of Get Lucky,
the rest of the album must be listened many times I think
to either appreciate it or completely reject it

a strange Daft Punk Funk album

I couldn't make it through the whole album. I gave up after the Julian Casablancas song.

My thoughts are this:

The music doesn't sound bad, but it's something I don't want to listen to.

This is a weird situation for Daft. It sounds like they are making music that makes them happy, but I would say they're leaving their fans at a crossroad with an album like this.

They peaked in 1997 with 'Homework'. The only thing that would be better in my mind is the 'Alive 1997' recording.

Hopefully, this will silent some of the Daft Punk fandom.

Okay--I read everything everyone was writing/saying about the album and it made me skeptical. My contrarian nature was aroused, and I was prepared to give the music more deference, maybe even find something in it that everyone else didn't and wrap my arms around it.

But I was largely unmoved***.

Daft Punk made an album today that should have come out in the 70s. Would have sounded amazing then.

And yeah, I get it--EDM is dead, yadda yadda yadda, whatever. That's an easy one--typical French response to the mainstream. That's fine, and it can be summed up in a sentence. I just did. Sort of.

I respect the fact that they made a true artist album, but it's not an album that I'll be listening to. Weird that I keep going back to Homework and Discovery--hopefully one day there will be a DP album that I'll listen to in full alongside those two.

I'll give it a few more listens, see if I can't still try to find something in it that's worthwhile. But right now, there are a bunch of old musicians nodding their heads in their music studios listening to this album on vinyl talking about how there are two French kids out there that finally did it right.

***There is one exception: Contact. That track is amazing. Way to go DP.
