Hi,

I've searched this forum, and in fact the whole damn Internet, and I seem to be the only person in the world with a protected "Come With Us" CD that won't play on my XP laptop or my Dad's XP PC. It plays fine on normal hi-fis.

I love the Chems but this makes me damn angry as there's no warning on the back of the CD - I paid for it and I should be able to listen to it on my laptop.

My pathetic protest if I can't get it to play is going to be to bin the album, as I have no idea where I bought it so can't complain - does anyone have any advice before I do that?

Thanks for your help!

There's a checkbox in Windows Media Player that says something along the lines of "allow play of protected media" - you need that checked, and anything else that mentions copyright.

Thanks for your help :)

I had a good look though, and the only settings I could find are already allowed (acquire licenses automatically, etc.)

I'm quite PC savvy so I'm pretty sure it's not just a setting in Windows Media Player...

Is there a player you can install that's on the CD? Also have you tried other multimedia players?

The PC acts as if the drive in empty, no matter what program you're using, so changing player doesn't help. I would have assumed it was something up with my PC, if it wasn't that it does it on my Dad's as well!

What country are you in? What country was the CD designed for?

It could be similar to DVD regioning

Hi... I'm in England, and as far as I know it's a normal English version of the CD.

Having said that I've had it a long time, so I have no memory of how I came by it - I've just noticed it says "Not for re-sale in the E.U." on it - so maybe it's a preview copy? Not sure how I would have got that though!!

btw, good job there darkie! i hope u can make it finally.

i was never into smokin tobacco, i did get hooked onto it for an yr or so, thanks to my chainsmokin girl, but now she's gone n i've successfully kicked it over the last one month. i am proud. :)

it does feel good. i have nothing against other people smoking, but i know for me it was just a bad habit i got sucked into since i was trying to quit s'kin pot all the time, n it did help me give up being a pot addict. now i'm a totally clean man. :)

i wish i can give alcohol. i wish i can rob a bank n go to the himalyas for the rest of my life. or even kodaikanal.

does the cd have the 'compact disc' logo on it? if it does then it will have no copy protection on it. protected cds, like copy control don't conform to the red book standard so therefore are not allowed to cary the compact disc logo.

i have come across old produced cds that that dont play on windows media player. i might be worth trying to play the disc in analogue mode instead of digital. try going into options > derices tab > select the cd drive you want to play the disc in > properties and then select the analogue settings.
I'm a fuckin doughnut

EMI sucks with their cover ruining copy-control bullshit, which takes up 1/3 of the (cover)space and doesn't work as anybody can still rip the damn thing with ease!

It's fucking hilarious: the good honest people who actually buy the cd get fucked in the ass by EMI and can not even play their cd's right in their car or computer because of their mofo guerilla copy protection methods.

Fuck you EMI!!! (I hope they read this)

For the first time I agree with you in every word you just say.
