I feel totally out of the loop since I stopped working at the record store. It's good because sometimes ignorance is bliss, I heard a lot of shit and often felt like wtf. It's bad because I don't have as much exposure to music, I don't have the option of finding those gem promos in the throwaway bins that nobody bothers looking through. Or being around people who were always listening and recommending and just shooting the shit about music.
Sometimes being around all the music got to be a bit much because I felt inundated, like there was a pressure to keep up so I could help people find stuff and recommend albums. There just weren't enough hours in the day and I never felt like I could ever know enough. Working in that environment was an ever humbling experience because there's just some things you don't know. Or don't have time to know yet.
You are right Jeanie, sometimes the music has to find you. It's one thing to ramdomly stumble on a great band - that's not a bad thing at all - but it's another to have the music search you out, speak to you and represent what you're going through at that time in your life.
be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle
