Jean Michel Jarre has just released a DVD of Oxygene being performed live in its entirety (complete with new sections) using only the original analogue synths. If you like your live knob twiddling then this is pure fetish material. In all seriousness its an incredible performance. There's no audience, its just Jarre and a 4 other musicians and about a zillion £'s worth of vintage analogue gear performing Oxygene in a temperature controlled studio (to help keep all the old keyboards in tune) The DVD also has a great little documentary with Jarre going round all the Moog's, ARP's, mellotron's, theramins and all the other old gear explaining how it all works and how he used it to create the album back in the 70's. If you like analogue synth stuff its a must buy.

Here's the trailer http://fr.youtube.co...feature=related

The actual movie is in 3D, its pretty weird watching it.

It's a shame I can't enjoy Oxygen as an adult because it is ruined by the memories of childhood drama classes where I was told to act like a tree.

Ben

Jarre says in the DVD's documentary he needs multiple gear because very little kit in those days had any inbuilt memory. If you wanted to get back to a certain sound you liked you had to re-wire and tweak everything to the way you had at the time. The huge ARP 2500 is the most awesome bit of kit though. Jarre says there are now less than 30 working models in existance (one of which is the British science museum apparently) I remember reading an interview with the Chems and Tom said its the holy grail of analogue synths and that he desperately wanted one but they're far to expensive even when they rarely come of the market. Not surprisingly if there's only 30 of them.

Yeah I know that Toby. The AKS/VCS are rare and expensive. So having 4 of them... That seems unfair :P

I'm going to the RAH gig.I'll be sitting upstairs at the back so I'd better buy some binoculars!

This is your best bet for current JMJ info:

What's the deal with the 3D DVD? I understand it's a 3D glasses affair (like Trafalgar?) - does it have the 2D normal version too?

sounds painful?

He put on a turn-down collar, a black bow, and wore his Sunday tail-coat. As such, he looked spruce, and what his clothes would not do, his instinct for making the most of his good looks would.

You get two pairs of 3D specs with the DVD. The 3D effect is pretty good as long as you have the lighting in your room turned off and watch the performance on a flat screen TV.

You do however get the whole thing in standard 2D which is a lot easier to watch.

Got tickets for the Glasgow gig today (£50 each!!!!!) I've seen Jarre live twice. Once in Paris in 1990 infront of about 2 million people and once at the Glasgow SECC in 97 (which wasn't nearly as full as it is for Chems gig I must say) and the Glasgow gig was way, way better. Jarre's music actually suits a more intimate atmosphere surprisingly well and the Glasgow Concert Hall only has a capacity of 1500. Should be good. I wonder if Tom and Ed will go to any of the shows.
