Hi guys, Im a massive Chem Bros fan and pride myself on having every single, b-side, vinyl and rarity going. BUT...

Ive only just heard a track called "Trance and Roll" on a live set rip from Glastonbury which I believe was 2002.

I cant believe I have not heard this, even more so suprised that I can find very little reference to it at all! Does anyone know where I can find it?

It does seem to have "It Doesnt Matter" vocal samples in about 2/3 way through, which either means it could be a remix of It Doesnt Matter or that the Chems are cueing up It Doesnt Matter for the next track.

Any help would be great! Please reply or email me at ihutchinson AT ntlworld DOT com

it was a lame title for "Three Little Birdies Down Beats" that a bootlegger put on there from a 1997 live set

Thanks for your help Biff, I have Three Little Birdies Down Beats but for some reason this supposed "Trance & Roll" sounds different, there a lot of squelchy acid synth in? Any ideas? Would you be kind enough to have a go at IDing it for me if I could send a sample over?

i probably have it...that acid stuff is live stuff they added in. it's not on any album materials. that's just how they played it live, give it that crazy noise.

well you got, three little birdies, open up remix, then a very twisted version of it doesn't matter. i just think it is it doesn't matter with a major reworking. as for the title 'trance & roll' probably something made up by someone, like the track titles on the dusted decks bootleg.

I'm a fuckin doughnut

that's about right, i got that track many years ago recalling it was a renamed version of 3 birdies and mixing into it doesn't matter, think it's a juno with a distortion pedal that's making the sounds, maybe an sh-101 since it does have a near-303 sound

I got my version of this exact sample from the bootleg "Surveillance" ... sounds like they're just really tweakin' out Three Birdies into It Doesn't Matter... just as sneaker mentioned...

In case somebody finds this page via google or the search forum wanting to know the same thing in years to come; here is Biff's brilliant explanation!

Ok here's a sort of 5th grade science class dissection of the track....

Beginning - Beats from 3 Birdies w/synth noise from same track and Open Up (Remix).

0:52 - This noise is from the remix they did of Leftfield called "open up" which sounds very similar to 3 birdies, essentially the same thing. They sort of alter this sound though the mixing board with echo. Why it is making such a crazy noise at 2:20 is probably because the chems use a synth called the kawaii k4 that has really good filters for rough distortion.

3:00 This noise, which is friggin great, is something they only did live. There is no album versions of this sound. A lot of the chems shows is additions to studio stuff, UnderTheInfluence/ItDoesn'tMatter from this tour right now uses a similar, but not as cool noise. Don't know what synth they are using, it might be a sample of one of their bigger synths they don't take on tour.

Hope this has been moderately helpful. Definitely check out other live shows from 1997 (soulseek is good application) for more stuff like this. There is a show from Atlanta in 1997 that has recently circulated widespread that is a soundboard quality live show with many tracks that have crazy sounds and drums like this one, that was what made the 1997 tour unique.

Best Regards,

Biff

4:00 Claps are from Roland TR-909 drum machine - also a live only addition.
