We saw the Transformers a couple of weeks ago and I disliked it so much I didn't want to bother mentioning that I saw it in this thread. It does absolutely nobody any good to type a scathing review so I'll just say that all this time later, I still want my money back but that's what I get for throwing good money at Michael freakin Bay.

But last night I saw an poignant and beautiful film called Into The Wild. It's a colorfully told journey of a young man who gives up everything - his family, his possessions, his money - to live out in the Alaskan woods alone. The film is beautiful to look at too. Character-wise, the physical, mental and spiritual trek to Alaska is what makes the film. The people he meets on his quest aren't extravagant people living extraordinary lives, but they are interesting nonetheless in that they are otherwise simple folks simply living their lives the way they want to. It's a fairly long film but secrets and truths are revealed along the way, and the ending is a sad and painful exercise of finally realizing what was known deep down inside all along.

Into the Wild had me crying 5 hours, i still cried when i was in bed. Offcourse my life as a model was different but when it comes to traveling, i can kind off relate to feelings he has. Beautiful film!

So I watched the movie 'Sunshine' by Danny Boyle on Blu Ray. Wow, such glorious eye candy and rather interesting idea for a movie. Could have gone without the slasher twist which brought the movie down. I felt it would have done fine on its own as a science fiction drama. Has a few copied science fiction scenarios which seems typical in this day of age. Also, Kinda felt like the movie was a little too quick. With such an interesting plot line it would have been nice to seen it stretch into a longer sophisticated film. Minus all my nitpicking, It's still a good watch for science fiction fans.

A film I just re-watched, 'Assassination of Jesse James'. Casey Affleck is just incredible in this film. Such beautiful cinematography.

I want to see 'Moon'. I'm a big Sam Rockwell fan and Science Fiction fan. So this movie is gotta be right up my alley.

Inglorious Basterds

I love that movie, it's great one, although i think it is not a real Tarantino. I miss some classic "tarantino"-dialogs in that movie.

Inglorious Basterds ^ ^ That looks like a good movie. I'm thinking about checking that one out. Which says a lot because I don't usually go to a movie. I waight for it to come out on DVD. I like any movie that has guns, drugs, music or comedy. ( NO sports ) ( NO spy fi ). Except stargate realated stuff and if its a sport where the sport involves a gun or weapon than thats fine.

IB reminded me when I saw 'Jackie Brown' !

Good dialogue that really builds the tension for the most part, especially the beginning and the bar scene. I didn't see the reason for subtitles, and some parts kind of dragged but im impatient I guess.

Kudos for the Mike Myers scene btw!

3 1/2 stars out of 5!

I personally thought it was a waste of time. I love Tarrantino and felt like it was a great let down.

Watched a few on a flight the other night.

First was Largo Winch - hadn't heard of it before, Euro-film. Adopted son's super-rich dad is murdered, he inherits it all, corporate intrigue, global chase, etc etc. Not too bad, easy watch, and a lot of it's filmed in Hong Kong, which I found interesting as I spend a lot of time here. Makes a great backdrop. And has Kristin Scott-Thomas in it, which works for me - is that wrong?

Second was Two Days in Paris. Again, hadn't heard of it, but was very funny. Reminded me of a Woody Allen film, good script and a lot of cynicism, paranoia and great characters, particularly the parents - the dad's an eccentric old Parisian artist, the mum's had a thing with Jim Morrison.

Interesting to read about the mixed views on IB - from the reviews and interviews with QT it sounded like it would be a typical QT film. I'll reserve judgement until I get the chance.

I have been reading about this Inglourious Basterds for a few years now - it was in the works for a really long time so I am excited to see the movie (I love dirty rotten good guys killing bad guys, heh) whenever time permits. But I don't want to get too hyped up and set myself up for disappointment.

The majority of what I've read (online) and through friends has been mainly positive except for the odd negative review here and there. I've heard it was too gory, not gory enough, not like a typical Tarantino film and heard criticisms about the pacing and there were parts that dragged on. I hope to view it with an open mind rather than expect another Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill 1. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. :)

I did catch District 9 a week and a half back. It was really quite good. The special effects were great and there was something about the film quality - that grainy 80's film quality combined with the modern use and modern technical aspects of handling the special effects that looked and felt so perfectly streamlined and integrated. There were some scenes that were a bit gory but the film wasn't necessarily a bloodbath - it was more the context in which the scene was taking place that made me uncomfortable. I loved that the film took place in Johannesburg during the 1980's. Time and place added more dimension to the sci-fi film in my opinion, in terms of underhanded social commentary.

District 9 was great.

And it was shot on a RED ONE digital cinema camera. [This is extemely cool, FTR]

He put on a turn-down collar, a black bow, and wore his Sunday tail-coat. As such, he looked spruce, and what his clothes would not do, his instinct for making the most of his good looks would.

Interesting. Not to thread-jack but out of curiosity... in layman's terms, what is a red one digital camera? I did a quick search online and all the techy mumbo jumbo is confusing to this old lady. :P

Is this type of camera part of the reason why the special effects in District 9 looked so realistic and, well, so perfectly imbedded with the live action? I wish I could see the movie again on the big screen. The more I think about it the more impressive it becomes.

:)

The Red Digital Cinema company just suddenly appeared a couple years ago and announced this fabulous digital camera that can capture what is, essentially, beyond the quality of 35 mm film; however, given that it is digital, manipulation and workflows become much simpler. This isn't particularly groundbreaking or incredible stuff. What they've done is a twofold achievement: they have built a camera that is better than a large part of the competition, with stronger and more efficient post-production workflow options; and the camera they have built is positioned in the market at a price of $17 500 per unit (body). The closest competitor was priced at over $200 000 before this; some cameras were only available on a rental basis.

So, in short:

- great camera that shoots beautiful images

- approachable and highly functional workflow

- no film costs

- allows indie filmmakers to produce films of the highest technical excellence

- also just very cool because the company came out of nowhere and has much style

Yeah, I enjoyed District 9 a lot too. I hadn't seen the previews for the film before viewing, only small commercial ad's that were kinda misleading for me. Coming into the movie I had though it was gonna be some epic action packed Independence Day like film. But, boy, was I wrong.

***Spoiler***

I Was shocked to see the aliens/prawns right at the beginning of the film. Again, I didn't really realize what the film was about till viewing, so I was kinda surprised that the movie took such a risk at showing what I presumed to be the antagonist so early in the film. So from that point I realized I wasn't watching some slopped together hollywood Sci-Fi Cash Cow.

I thought the biological and social angle was great and refreshing, especially for a Sci-Fi film. Not to say there wasn't any action, because the action scenes were not only appropriate, but executed very well.

It was amazing how incredibly uncomfortable this film made me (in the good way). At first it was how repulsive the prawns made me feel seeing the way they lived and what not. And then my thoughts do a total 180 and feel bad for the prawns and how socially dysfunctional we are as humans.

As mentioned before, Johannesburg was a great place for location. Want to also add, I love that I knew none of the actors/actress. Was great never being distracted by big hollywood names.

Only bad thing I can say about the film is they left it open for a sequel, or i've even heard prequel. But my take is that all the unanswered questions should be left to the imagination. That being said, if there should be a sequel or prequel, I'll be seeing it.

*******

How about that Zombieland preview. "Zombie Kill of the week" I LOLed hard. :)
