there was a simian mobile disco post about the artist, and i just thought it would be nice for everybody to talk about other artists, but it looks like it's annoying to you...

I thought this was constructive. You know, have people talk to each other about a legendary artist? Maybe?

No, it's that we have a problem with a bunch of similar threads cluttering the forums. Making a single thread to discuss any artist would have been more constructive and probably would've drawn less fire from everyone. NOT that I'm suggesting you go do that right now, but if you do want to make another opinion thread, make it open to any artist. That way you won't have to create a thread for every band you'd like to talk about, and we won't get as pissed at you.

When you start a thread, it's advisable to provide some springboard into discussion. Maybe talk about a song you like or a song you don't like, how their music influenced the Chems, do you like pre-Revolver or are you a post-Revolver fan, what do you think of that song Hello Goodbye and is it better than Tomorrow Never Knows...
It's the Beatles here. The sky is the limit!
Also take into consideration that sometimes a thread will get sidetracked and veer off topic. This is very very annoying a.) to people like to keep the discussion linear and b.) to people that are used to forums and messageboards that are moderated in such a way to keep threads on track. Sometimes the conversation will get back on track and other times it won't.
Unless you're in school or on the debate team, I see no such need for such strict moderating tactics over people conversing. That's not how natural conversation flows. That said, this isn't an open invitation to hijack threads or open individual topics to try and box conversations in. That's a bit annoying and it does clutter up the forums.

They're a legendary artist, but really, i don't know why. I've never listened to many of their songs, nor have they gotten me into tune. But, i don't want to seem out of the crowd so i go along with other people's opinions about the beatles, mostly positive at best.

The changing point for me was seeing Paul McCartney in the early 90's, and hearing how the Beatles' music impacted so many people simultaneously on such a grand scale. And the older I got and the more music I explored, the more I realized just how much of an impact the Beatles were and still are, on a lot of musicians. They were exploring and doing things back then that were revolutionary, and pushing that envelope into critical and commercial success. Doing that opened doors of inspiration to other musicians. The fact that the Beatles are still relevant and that their entire catalog resonates into the 21st century (even if it's on a basic "yeah I like them, even if they are overrated" level) speaks volumes.

i see their art in context of time. beatles representing the big bang of modern rock music (or pop); or beatles are modern rock music made in the 70's. they are in one line with mozart if you ask me. one of the most important bands ever.
in comparison to the beatles i think the gallaghers are a bit overrated. lennon and mccarthney will rule the rock olymp in heaven when they are together again.
