My brother has an ipod (first generation), an ipod Mini (which he might give to me hopefully) and his coworkers just bought him the new U2 ipod - Which totally tickled my fancy btw.
Last weekend I was playing around with his U2 ipod and I've come to the decision that an ipod is something I would like. It would come in handy when I ever get off my duff for bike riding, . It is so easy to use, I like the look and feel, they are durable (provided you keep the protective skin on)... and I may be tempted by the power of the dark side here, but damn it's kind of cool to have all those songs in the palm of your hand, it's all in there. Plus those Chemical Brothers iskins are oh-so-cute.
I asked my brother about his first generation ipod and the battery life claims, and he said it was true, the batteries did pose problems. I guess Apple sent emails to registered ipod users saying they could get a credit for a new battery (or something along those lines). On that note, he said the later generation ipods were superior to the older ones...

Well, the iRiver H320 is an alternative to the Sony and the iPod. It's the sound quality that makes iRiver a winner for me... OGG support! There's also the FM tuner, the ability to play videos, the ability to record from any sound source and the cool feature to download firmware upgrades from the iRiver site.
Around 270 will get you:
20GB of internal storage
Equalizer: 5 Preset EQ(Normal, Rock, Jazz, Classic, Ultra Bass) & 1 User EQ, SRS WOW
2.0" inch TFT-LCD Display, 220x176
Ultra-fast USB 2.0 transfers
Supports secure transfers from Windows Media Player
Rechargeable battery lasts up to 16hrs
View JPEG or BMP images
Built-in FM tuner
Integrated voice recorder
Record music from any audio source(no PC required)
Supports MP3, WMA, ASF and OGG music files
Store or transfer files of any type
Enhanced 3D audio
Some shops even seem to throw in a pair of Sennheiser MX300 earphones.
It is heavier than those other players though - Weight: 183g (Including Battery)
Dimensions: 103 x 62.1 x 22.5 mm

the thing that swung it in favour of the phillips for me is there are volume buttons on it, on the ipod if you are browsing your music and want to change the volume you have to go back into the song that you are playing. quite annoying.
i like the iriver though, the color screen is nice...
