Massive Attack - Special Cases
Listening to 100th Window, an album I've always liked but always felt was FAR beneath all of their previous efforts. I think I'm really beginning to appreciate it properly now. The lyrics of 'Special Cases' in particular resonates with me right now, as I hadn't listened to the song in months.
This would definetly make the tracklisting if I'd compiled a breakup CD to give to her. (I hate how bitter I sound, because I'm really not. I just enjoy being mockingly spiteful.) Anyways, great song.
don't tell your man what he don't do right
nor tell him all the things that make you cry
but check yourself for your own shit
and don't be making out like it's all his
take a look around the world
you see such bad things happening
there are many good men
ask yourself is he one of them
the deadliest of sin is pride
make you feel like you're always right
but there are always two sides
it takes two to make love
two to make a life
take a look around the world
you see such mad things happening
there are few good men
thank your lucky stars
that he's one of them

100th window always feels a little more intentional than blue lines and protection and a little less rough than mezzanine.
I like it though, it's very mood-setting. It's great for doing things. Like anything, it makes it more emotional.

He put on a turn-down collar, a black bow, and wore his Sunday tail-coat. As such, he looked spruce, and what his clothes would not do, his instinct for making the most of his good looks would.

I think you can really feel the gradual loss of the black soul element of the group when you look at the chronology between Blue Lines and 100th window.
Blue Lines was hip-hop and soul and living on the edges of life, but still living.
By 100th Window, there is no soul. Heart has been destroyed. Existing on the edges of life, but living? I'm not sure that more than remnants remain.
For me, it's a very black and white (literally) divide in the group's career. And an interesting trajectory to follow.
I appreciate 100th Window a lot more now that I'm a bit older, I think. Some of my recent life experiences have hardened me that bit that I needed to GET where Del Naja was coming from.
