I saw The Curious Case of Benjamin Button last month. It was a very well made film, and I found it moving. I noticed right away, however, striking similarities to Forrest Gump, and I'd have to say that it didn't leave me with quite the lasting impression that I had anticipated. On the other hand, the film definitely makes a mark in its own right to be considered away from previous films.

The production and process of filmmaking approached perfection in this case: the makeup was great, acting superb, and cinematography was excellent. The writing had a few problems, I'd say, but overall it was a great story. And in the end, once again, I'm really glad I saw it and I'd agree with any nomination to any category for an Oscar. I think, though, there are better films which were put out last year which deserve best picture.

Hmmm. I want to see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - I've read good things about it, pretty much what was said by Pooter.

I saw a movie called Choke over the weekend. Stash saw it and said, "Oh man, you have to watch this film! It starts out funny and just goes completely fucked up! You'll laugh your ass off."

So, I saw it. And I stopped laughing about 20 minutes in. And I pretty much wanted to die after I was done watching it. If I say too much it will give the film away but it taps the root of why the movie's protagonist is a fucked up sex addict who chokes on food in public places to get attention. The film was good - really good - and done in a sort of series of flashbacks but it wasn't hard to follow at all. The acting was great and once you reach the end, it's psychologically twisted and disturbing.

But honestly, this film has been on my mind for a couple of days now as it bothered me (not in a good way, yet not in a bad way either). It was just... fucked up.

Then again maybe I'm not in the mood for black humor these days.

I know the kind of thing you mean, I still get uneasy when I think back to Running Scared with it's two total seperate story lines which didn't work together, felt mashed together for the sake of shock. Benjamin Button is a good film, watch this if you've seen it http://www.funnyordi...mp-from-fgump44

One of the best films I saw of last year would have to be Outpost, a low budget (but you'd never know it) British film. Watch it people!

@Whirls: I read Choke a number of years ago when I was going through my "I love Chuck Palahniuk" phase. I still do very much appreciate Palahniuk's work, but I'd say I'm saturated at this point.

Choke is a fucked up novel, and I'll probably end up renting the DVD at some point with the understanding that I'll probably be disappointed. This is one of the few instances in which I read the book before seeing the movie, and I have my own record of events in my head of the story. I was impressed with the darkness of the story, so much so that I created a final project in sound class doing a reading of the second chapter while tweaking a whole bunch of different shit into it.

Hilariously, I was able to use that final project for another class, and when I did the presentation for it I played the recording while my professor's 9 year-old son was in the room. Her husband rushed him out--I didn't even notice.

Slumdog Millionaire was a good one, indeed. The production values were superb.

Yeah I liked Slumdog. What annoyed me was the host who couldn't pronouce the word "millionaire".

Target had all 'Superman' movies on 2 discs for $9.99! Saw the first three, skipped the last!

Superman 2 was a great sequel that upped the original, plus had the balls to put on a 'Love' plot between Clark and Lois and still pulled it off.

"It's impossible, Lois could never have Superman's baby. Do you think her fallopian tubes could handle the sperm? I gurantee you he blows a load like a shotgun right through her back. What about her womb? Do you think it's strong enough to carry her child?"

Slumdog Millionaire was excellent and one of the best films I've seen in a long time. Visually stunning, great acting, fantastic and engaging story of continuous triumphs over what seems like endless and merciless adversities. I even liked the way the subtitles were handled. The score was fantastic as well. It managed to be touching without going all schmaltzy. Slumdog Millionaire deserves all the accolades it's currently getting. Well done, Danny Boyle.

I also saw Zack and Miri Make A Porno. There were some scenes that were amusing (some were even laugh out loud funny) but then it went the romantic comedy route and wound up going all soft-brie-cheesy. Jason Mewes sure is funny, though. I dig that guy.

ha yeah totally agree about Zack & Miri Whirly, the romantic shit stopped the film from being as good as it could have been.

I want to see that movie "Choke". I'm kind of a fan of Sam Rockwell after I saw that movie "Box of Moonlight" with John Turturro and him.

I saw "Yes Man" for the 3rd time today. Different groups of friends keep inviting me to go. It's a pretty decent movie. I'm a fav of Jim Carrie so that is also a good add. I was thinking (and i'm sure many others have thought this too) of trying it in real life. I have no job so I should try something radical.

OK, at great risk of being flamed by Benjamin Button fans... Here goes.

I saw part of this over the weekend. I really, really really wanted to like it.

The cinematography was good, so no issues there. For all intents and purposes, I should have liked the film: good cast, good acting, nice to look at because Fincher is an awesome director. But it just seemed... I don't know... it just seemed like there was no 'there' there.

The whole premise of the film, while sounding good in theory, bugged me. It was a bit too creepy and off kilter for my liking on film. I did like the pearls of wisdom coming from the old folks at the rest home - these parts I found endearing. But as soon as Benjamin started to become 'of age', I felt the movie just dragged on and on and on. We turned it off (or maybe I fell asleep, which seems to be par for the course when I become disengaged from what's happening on the screen) around the time Benjamin came back from his sea-faring expedition (which seemed overly dramatic and highly improbable anyway).

I don't even know how much longer the film lasts but it seemed like it dragged on for an eternity. I don't dislike long films but this was really way too long. It seemed too earnest a film, too sincere as if it tried too hard, Brad Pitt's southern accent annoyed me, and there's that whole "there's no 'there' there" thing that just left me feeling blah and underwhelmed. Maybe I'll go back and see how it ends, but at this point I couldn't care less.

To quote Family Guy: "It insists upon itself"

About summed it up for me. :(

It certainly did feel like a looooooong film but a good one. Although, I'm not likely to watch it again.

So I saw The Watchmen this evening (on the IMAX).

Not too bad, there were so aspects that I liked such as the characterization, direction and special effects. There's so really good fight sequences as well. I may have liked the movie better if I hadn't read the book (I'm actually not quite done with the book, shamefully enough). READ THE BOOK! I will say right now that the book is 1000x better than the film.

I won't be a spoiler and say too much about the movie since this one is rather highly anticipated. At least not until some more people here have seen it and feel like discussing.

I saw it earlier at the cinema, and left to go to the bathroom at a crucial part of the film *twat* It wasn't bad, but I wouldn't buy it on DVD. 300 was a better film by Snyder imo.
