This is one of the fears you have when you put on an event of this scale. I have put on events that have a few thousand (not millions) people show up and it is a scary thing to think what can go wrong. I was working an outdoor event last september when I thunderstorm blew out of no where. It caused damage to the stage and I cut my hand open on metal wire trying to hold down one of the wind screens as we put it into place. The musicans were in danger at one point along with some of the audience.

Now stampedes are a weird occurance. Sometimes caused by stupidity, sometimes just freak as you have too many people. One of the best pieces of advice I got from a instructor on event management. "When you enter a room, know where your exits are. Because if something goes wrong you you need people out fast and one door is not going to cut it"

If anyone wants a semi-interesting read go check out Chuck Klostermans "Killing yourself to live". He brings up the great white incident in Rhode Island in 2003.

My condolences.

But it was an obvious mousetrap. Thousands of people into sort of a tunnel...the weird (and good) thing is that only few people has died. The tragedy has been relatively small regarding to the massive scale of the event.

Aww, this is so sad. Thankfully it was not as bad as it could have been but it's still sad nonetheless.

Damn, my wish to visit the Love Parade at least once will never come true.
How the fuck did the organisers book a place for the festival which could sustain hardly 500.000 people and let 1.5 million people in!?
You're never too retarded to RAVE!!!

reminds me to Big Beach Boutique back in 2002 at Brighton Beach, expect 50,000 or so....end with close to a million..... (a little exagerated)

Actually the number of dead people is 20, 500 are still injured.

How can you be so stupid to let 1,5 million people into a place that only has space for 500.000 ?

organizers, administrations, politics and police are shifting the blame on each other.

I just now saw that BBC clip stardoktor posted. You can sort of get a sense of scale from the areal view but the eye-view footage in the clip gives you a much more chilling perspective of just how large this event is.

Amen. This is Lovefest. Previous years according to the DJ in the BBC clip have said this was an easy going festival... Nobody wanted this to happen but the blame has to be shouldered somewhere. It's irresponsible to hold an event that size in an area that small. Stampedes and mobs are terrifying, primal fight-or-flight type scenarios. God I can't imagine what it must've been like.

Apparently, some people died before the stampede...and that's what triggerred the stampede.
Roses are red
Violets are blue
And I will rape

Documentary

At the 2010 Loveparade in Duisburg, 21 people died, many more were injured.

Over the last few weeks, there has been much speculation about the events of that day.

This film shows what happened on 24 July 2010.
It is based on CCTV recordings, explanatory animations, documents, press reports and eyewitness accounts.
