*shocked* What kind of parents are you, letting your son playing restricted games ? :o

Are you being serious Ben_j? I mean, I could see how some videogames with really blatant sexual content (full dick shot in GTA4 DLC, anyone?), but Red Dead is pretty tame. Sure, there are old-timey prostitutes in the game that make passes at you, but as model husband he declines, even against the will of the player. Otherwise, you're ONLY killing tons of virtual people and animals.

My cousin ( he's only 10 and almost a smaller version of me) has both PS3 and 360 and has only those kid friendly games. So I always rent those other games for him!

As of this day, the parents still don't know!

I'm only half serious. People always blame violent videogames for giving children ideas and all. They don't seem to know that just like movies, violent video games are restricted to a certain age. The only reason children are playing violent games is because parents let them, and the shops never refuse to sell a game, even if an 8 years old buys an 18+ game.
If you play GTA, you can see equaly violent/shocking images on the news. The world is a bit hypocrite about that.

Now, I played this kind of games when I was younger (Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, GTA 3...), just like I watched porn when I was a teenager, or watched violent movies that I was not supposed to watch.

PS: I don't remember that dick shot in GTA DLC. When is it ?

The biggest hypocrisy is that in the USA you are not supposed to play to Call of duty before you are 18 but you can join the army at the age of 16.

I think games can shape the young mind, much like pornography does which we have seen in the news. Children of 10 are said to be watching these graphic films online, and kids playtimes now are probably much different to what we used to do as our minds were innocent and pure.

Before I was a parent, I had a laundry list of do's and don't's I swore I'd force my kid to abide by. That all went out the window the minute I became a parent. Not because I'm lazy, but because I feel I know what my son's boundaries are and what he is and isn't capable of. As parents we do restrict his game play. We have to. Or else he wouldn't be the stellar student he is in school. :P I'm not saying my son is special and perfect more than the next kid. However, he's an incredibly sensitive and sensible young man who has always had a keen moral sense, and even though he is shy he maintains healthy relationships with people and knows his boundaries. He'll be 13 in a couple of months. If my son didn't have a long term goal of being a video game developer, and wasn't interested much in gaming story lines (he's a fantastic writer if I must say so myself), and didn't have the mental capacity to distinguish right and wrong - then I'd be hesitant to let him have any gaming privileges at all.

@whirlygirl, I think most parents rip up that list once the realities of parenthood comes along. You obviously did a great job raising your son.

[serious shit]
Far from a perfect parent myself, but I was pretty strict with my children. They have grown up and are having children themselves now. In my opinion 0 to 5 are the most important years. Possibly even younger than 5. If you do a good job of shaping their morals and beliefs in those years, then you will have a lot less problems later. Doesn't mean that they won't still dabble in drugs, play violent games or watch porn, but they will be less likely to be changed by those experiences.
[/serious shit]

sorry about that.

I played a lot of violent and gore games when i was young, and it never had any effect on me, the proof is that I never get angry.

Parents can shelter their kids from the truth all they want, but they're going to find out about the violence and hypocrisy someday. The people who like to troll take the game seriously and represent it even more realistic than they do in real life. Kids aren't entirely effected by the violence and such, and it shouldn't be their fault for committing inpersonations if the source of the problem was from the unclear thought of a parent buying them those overage games.

When you spend all your time and money raising your children, and they get to their teens and turn around and say "fuck off dad, I'll do what I fucking want" that is that moment when you know you did OK. The sweetest reward :-P

I think the most hypocrite video game ever must be The Sims.

Really, who would believe that real life is made of meeting people, having a family and all that shit ? This game is nonsense !

So now my killing machine son and I are settling down to play Sonic 4.

Most annoying stuck-in-your-head-for-hours-on-end music ever.

*edit* The years have had a serious impact on my one nimble motor skills that allowed me to play a half decent game.

hahaha see, this is exactly what I mean. I was a right cunt (I still am if i'm honest) and if I had a kid like me I would have murdered him with a chainsaw in the bath tub.

Just completed Modern Warfare, I should have played it when it came out really cos with all the other copies of MW out there that I have played, it's tainted it so i'm a bit of the style now. I cannot wait till a new Rainbow Six game comes out, that is a real FPS, not like all you fuckers are playing these days - lobbing grenades, spraying bullets and jumping around like baboons.

No, I think it is just that your brain is tricking you to think that this sonic should be as responsive as the old ones. The game has sloppy controls, that is all....or I am losing my motor skills as well. That would explain why I can't win a single match in Street Fighter II anymore.
