I had my opportunity to go to raves (in Manchester no less!) in 1990 but the friends I hung with at the time just weren't interested. My only regret in life, really. Not experiencing Madchester for myself. So we went to all sorts of "dodgy" clubs in London instead.
Going to raves changed my outlook on dance culture in general. I used to be into going to goth/industrial clubs, almost every weekend - but we started going to raves about a year and a half after we were married. I guess we just got tired of going to our old clubs - raves seemed more progressive, fresh, newer music and there was less attitude which meant more room to be yourself. Even if there were candy kids (which never bothered me all that much to be honest) at least they talked to you. Even if my husband and I looked like pasty Bauhaus listening death rockers. The clubs we went to in Los Angeles - so much attitude and I just don't care for it honestly.
Nowadays, I don't got to clubs much anymore at all. Hardly ever - maybe once every 2 blue moons. Maybe I'm old but it's just such a hassle dealing with LA and there just aren't any good clubs within cabbing distance of where I am - and I'm certainly not driving. Nocturnal Wonderland was the first rave I've been to in years, first concert in a long long time and it felt good to be a part of that. It took me baaaaaaaaack.
