( Sorry Whirly for stealing the name ;))

What songs meant something to you in 2005 and why ?! It doesn't have to be songs that were released this year - just songs that have a special meaning to you...

I'll start. In no particulair order :

1) Surface to Air - This song got me trough a very difficult time in my life. I Remember , it came out when i was in NY. Walking trough the snow storms in the freezing cold while being messed up in my head. This song , somehow , kinda got me trough. And that moment in Brixton when they played it , i will never forget it.

2) Like Eating Glass from Bloc Party - Same reason as above. The lyrics and me music just made so much sense to me. The whole song just said exactly how i felt , musically and text wise.

3) Hold Tight London - This was my favorite song when PTB just came out. This song , more than anything else , represents for me the time i spend in NY. I still feel the awesome things i had there , but even more i still feel how sad i was.

4) Warning sign from Coldplay - This song always ment a lot to me , so it also did this year. It's Coldplay's most beautifull song imo , and it's the song that me and my ex bf always used to listen to.

5) The Good People from Jack Johnson - I bought this album when i just lived in my old own house. It was late summer , every moring during breakfast with the windows open i used to play this song...everytime i hear it i think of my old house.

6) Ramblin Man from Lemon Jelly - Well what can i say ? I just love Lemon Jelly , and i listened to it in the plane once when i travelled SO much i had a huge jetlag , i was in like 3 countries in one day - I remember i felt as if this song was written for me hahaha !!

7) Breathe me from Sia - Just one of the most beautifull songs i've heard in a while

8) Comptine d'un autre ete : L'appres Midi from Amelie soundtrack - Same reason as Sia

9) Stronger by the Sugarbabes - I know i know i , can see ya'll thinking. But the lyrics ment a lot to me. Plus it's a beatifull song !!

10 ) The Prodigy - Voodoo People ( Pendulum Remix ) - Well....i'm a big DnB lover and this year has been my utlimate DnB Party year !!! I can't count the times where i was off me face dancing my ass off to wicked evil DnB , AND I LOVE IT !!!!

11) Tresspasers William - Lie in the sound. The first song i heard from TW ( Thnx Jos! ) and now i played their cd's like a million times. Their music has the power to make me cry and make me think about things.

12) Ullrich Schnaus - Clear day ( Thnx Bri! ) I remember being on a shoot in South of France , driving in this hot car in 35 degrees to the location , in an amazing landscape. The song was perfect for the moment. Now everytime i listen to it i pciture sizzling hot summer days - it kind of is the song of summer to me.

So , now it's you're turn kiddo's. Hope to read some intresting storie's for the songs that were special to you in 2005 !!

Love ya'll !

1) Walk Away - Franz Ferdinand

First heard this song during a period where things weren't going so well with my girlfriend and the bittersweet chorus still just gets me every time. "I love the sound of you walking away, you walking away." Beautiful vocal melody and delivery. Smashing.

2) Surface to Air - Chemical Brothers

I don't really need to say anymore, do I? First time I heard this was during a perfect sunset and it was love at first listen.

3) Close Your Eyes - Chemical Brothers

First time I REALLY got this song was at sunrise on the way to work. It changed me, internally. Really. Something special here.

4) Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees

Another one of those failed love songs that just seems to rip me apart every time I listen to it. "If I could be... what you wanted.... all the time...." My heart breaks thinking of it. Been there, done that.

5) Music: Response - Chemical Brothers

My girl's fave Chems song. We bonded over this. She loves the bleeps and bloops. Figured I needed a happy song in here somewhere.

I'll add more later, maybe, but this is a good start.

Well, there's a few.

But the most loved song this year is Hold Tight London. Aside from it being a most incredible and unique piece of music - it's pulled out a lot of memories that came long before the song ever did. Sure I can think of songs that remind me of things or bring back memories that are a reflection of the time when the song came out or when I first heard it... but for a new song to pull old memories out of my brain the way Hold Tight London does? I can't think of any tune that's ever managed to do something like that. It's amazing...

In no particular order:

Leftfield - Release the pressure [taken from a post of mine on "Leftfield" topic:] I can't get enough of the intro to the Leftism, I really dig the mysterious atmosphere and the anthemic vocals of Earl Sixteen There's been times this year where I've listened to the track every day.

Royksopp - Only this moment

Very intriguing lyrics, only fully understood them recently though after reading them on the 12" album cover. "Stay or forever go / play or you'll never know" also "I know I might lose it by taking the chance / but love without pain isn't really romance". Superb, favourite song of the year for me.

Chemical Brothers - The Big jump

Possibly the funkiest song of they year! Awesome squealing guitars and "fragments of bass" as sneaker put it. I can't sit down when listening to it!

Gorillaz - Dare

Another insanely funky record, yes overplayed by radio/tv but I still love the rythmn and keyboard hooks.

New Order - Blue Monday

The old classic, put this one onto minidisc along with a load of other 80s songs. Listened to this a lot more this year, still sounds great (but you didn't need me to say it! ;-) )

The Flaming lips - Ego tripping at the gates of hell

I'll try not to be negative here, but the first lines to the record seem to sum up life sometimes. Theres been a few times this year when I've hoped that a certain event would happen, like meeting up with mates I don't see very often but either circumstances change or it just doesn't happen.

Juliet - Avalon (Jacques le Cont versus remix)

Worth a mention for its unique, subterrainean atmosphere, its like walking along a long dark passage, thats pretty much what happens in the video actually...

Renegade Soundwave - Renegade soundwave (Leftfield remix)

Very very dark acid stomper from Leftfield (only the lyrics link it to the original track, so its almost like Leftfield's own creation). Highlight has to be the breakdown where the sequence is distorted when the beats are taken away...then storm in again...if you've heard the remix you will know what I mean.

Tracks I've had brief fascinations for this year (random list):

U2 - Still haven't found what I'm looking for / With or without you / Pride (in the name of love)

Coldplay - Don't panic

The Bravery - Honest mistake

Visage - Fade to grey

Gary Numan - Cars

Paul McCartney & Wings - Silly love songs

Jan Hammer - Crockett's theme

Blancmange - Living on the ceiling

The Stone Roses - I wanna be adored

Only two items for me, Push the Button, because that's the reason we went to London and Primal Scream's Screamadelica, because I had the most intense trip of my life listening to that fricken album.

I could be wrong, but I think Jeanie was trying to elicit replies with songs that MEANT something and had special significance, not just songs that kicked a lot of ass. I've dug most of the tracks everyone has listed, but I'm not sure they're what was being looked for (although if y'all really felt that strongly about the track, never mind me! :D ).

Apologies if I misunderstood, Jeanie!

A few more that GOT me this year:

6) Coldplay - The Scientist

Chris Martin might be a bit of a wanker and Coldplay might not be rewriting the rules of music, but I'm sorry, they know how to write a pretty tune and this one hits all the hard places. Sums up struggling relationships and trying to make amends perfectly. Pulls me and pulls me.

7) Primal Scream - Keep Your Dreams

Really started listening to this one early in 2005 and it just knocks me over every time. As dense and hard an album as XTRMTR is, this song is an oasis of beauty in the wasteland (like Coachella is to Indio!!!). Bobby G. still can't write a coherent set of lyrics but he fakes it well. Sentiment is spot on.

8) Radiohead - There, There

See 'Fake Plastic Trees', 'Walk Away', etc. The breakup song. It's probably unhealthy, but these tunes hit me somewhere vulnerable.

9) Faithless - No Roots (album)

Even though I bought it in 2004, this album took a life of its own for me this past year. For a while I couldn't listen to anything else. 'Mass Destruction', 'I Want More', 'Miss U Less, See U More' and 'What About Love' provide the sentiment, and the music provides the groove. Take me away.

10) New Order - True Faith

I don't think I even need to say anything, do I?

We'll save a few for a third installment, I think.

i will just go ahead and skip the chemical songs...i liked them all and I don't have time to post my thoughts! : )

i can tell you that one of the best moments for me in 2005 was hearing Luke Fair drop Believe followed by a remix of Holdtight at Space in Miami during WMC.

onto the songs....I know after I post this, I will thnk of many others that blew my mind this year, but these will be the ones that pop up of the top of my soup-head.

LCD Soundsystem - "Tribulations(Tiga and Jesper Dahlback mix)" - track just sounded so right when I heard it for the fist time. The vocals rose above me and I had a spirtual moment.

DFA 1979 - "Little Girl"

yes yes yes.....some creative, yet simple punk rock with really good vocals. i loved it

DFA 1979 - "Romantic Rights(Jesper Dahlback mix)"

holy fuck.....the best of punk and electroish dance rolled into one and it doesn't sound like that shittly electroclash shit from last year

Tiga - "Move My Body(only for Erol mix)"

bestest shroomy tune I have ever heard....hands down...sorry, just doesn't get any better for veggie eating.

Beach Boys - "Feel Flows"

wow.......how was this year the first time I had ever heard this song? How is this not a mainstream classic. it is fucking beautiful.

Bloc Party - "Like Eating Glass"

i really like all their tracks and it is hard to just pick one, but I must have listened to this one more than any of the other this year. The more I listened, the better it got.

Jack Johnson - "Do You Remember"

a really pretty little short song that my wife and I love. the lyrics have some really strange refrences to our relationship and it is track 13 on the album. i don't need to go all into it though. it is just kinda creepy how much of this song is about us....it is like he knows us.

Thomas Schumaker - "Tiger"

rrrooooooooaaaarrrr .......now dance it up, bitch

Pier Bucci - "The R-8 Mooger"

also kinda hard to pick a fave, but I think this would be the one. Guy has the cleanest productions. Great for that 4:30 am buzz.

Out Hud - "Dear Mr. Bush, There Are Over 100 Words For Shit and Only 1 For Music. Fuck You, Out Hud"

i think the name says it all.........another track for the 4:30 am slot

Strokes - "You Only Live Once"

loved on the first listen......probably my favorite Strokes track.

Depeche Mode - "John The Revelator"

they just keep doing it......keep evolving...this is some dirty shit and I love it. I want more

shit....there are many more tracks that really got me good this year....maybe I will come back and add part 2 to this post.

later!

Man I've heard so many remixes I liked this year, I'll get back on you on that. As for favourite tracks hmmmm too many to mention I think.

Let me give some live tracks I heard this year that absolutely blowed my mind:

Prodigy - Back to School

This is a track made for live performance. I think may people know it know from the Their law album. It was Berlin in april where I heard it the first time in its new form, and again in november, Amsterdam. Rocking!!

Chemical Brothers - Surface to air

This track is love to me. Live it gives me the same feeling as love does. For sure!! It was Amsterdam and Cologne, february when I first got it and it was Belgium, july after a horrible downpoar where it got me!!

Magic Numbers - Hymn for her

It's one of my favourite bands from this year. This track has a little xylophone break in the middle. Live it's both girls again only on xylophone. So fragile, so lovely amazing

Audioslave - Chosise

Again one from the Werchter festival, Belgium, july. only one word to discribe this: ROCK!!!!! oh yeah and: JUMPING

that are the ones that popped to mind

Close Your Eyes....

its my favorite song of all time right now. theres so much emotion in this track and as someone who is very emotionally numb....well this track is just like a pure injection of emotion right into the blood stream. I love it.

I like this song a lot, the singer has a nice accent that remind me to my old colleague from up north.

What are you to me - Unkle

Always my fav. when i am listening to this album, and this year came back a lot on my ears.

Bad Timing - dEUS

Great song who used to wake me up as alarm in the morning on my last days at work on the old job. such a nice countdown!!

Two Months Off - Underworld

Other way round! Always on, everymorning on my way to the new job!

they are great!

The Ideal Crash - dEUS

The best love song for me. Even this year, could not stop to think about her , .. you bitch.

Surface To Air - The Chemical Brothers

Cause is reminds me the first time i heard it live in Sao Paolo. brilliant!
