Hello possums,

Since me and my BF are going to London to see Amon Tobin, we would love to hear whats hoing on in London town nowadays.

So, Londoners, do you have some recommendations for us in terms of clubs, drinks, bars, food, live music?

Thanks from Amsterdam!

Jeanie

Because you were attempting to follow journalistic/academic standards of capitalizing titles. ;-)

Depends on what type of events you'd like to go to...there's so much stuff to do in London that you just can't decide yourself out of recommendations. I keep receiving messages from the infolines of the organizers of the raves I went to last summer so they seem to be still doing that kind of stuff despite the winter, but if dancing all night long to psytrance while on acid isn't your genre then there's a lot of other things you can do !

I kind of agree with what Bloke said, the question is almost too big to answer.
'The Guide' booklet that comes free with the Guardian newspaper on a Saturday always has gig/film/club/theatre/exhibition listings and usually recommends things happening over the next seven days. They have good taste.
Time Out is now a free magazine handed out outside tube stations on a Tuesday morning (I think) so you may struggle to find that at newsagents now.

I don't know how well you know London Jeannie. If you have been and done the West End then you could go east. But maybe you've done East too...If not, the Shoreditch area has plenty of bars and some clubs too. I've had some fun "E" influenced nights in "333" Old Street although the place is quite basic (sometimes it's separate entry for upstairs & downstairs). I've been wanting to go to East Village for a while , I hear good things. Club Aquarium has a mini swimming pool...

If you've already done Camden Market (still fun) you could try Spitalfields Market next to Liverpool St tube/rail station. It was "done up" a while ago and has a roof which can be useful in the rain, but no walls so it still feels outdoorsy. Walk through the market and out the other side (Ten Bells pub) and you're nearly at Brick Lane. I quite enjoy being accosted by the guys outside the Indian restaurants trying to bribe you with better deals/free drinks than the next guy so that you'll eat there. And if you don't like spicy food they'll do some pretty mild curries for you. Don't forget to order a Peshawari Naan bread and some poppadoms.

Just off Brick lane you can find Rough Trade East - one of the best independent record shops in the world. They get plenty of decent free instore gigs there too. Radiohead tried to play a free 'instore' there once but the queue was so huge outside they had to move the gig to 93 Feet East nearby. Funnily enough I mentioned 93 Feet East recently on this board as the cops did a totally over the top drug bust on the venue (footage on Mixmags website/youtube). There are other venues in the Brick Lane area too: LINK
Pop Up restaurants have become a bit of a fad in the last year or two. They don't last too long but when they're good, the 'foodies' get excited about them. This can lead to large queues outside crappy temporary 'restaurants' (no booking policy!) so you can choose from a limited menu. LINK If that's your thing then I guess it's 'hot' in London.
Sadly the occasional Chems home of Turnmills is long gone. As indeed are all the clubs that used to nestle together in Kings Cross Goods Yard (The Key, The Cross, Canvas...). This makes me sad :-( . However EGG nightclub is alive and kicking and gets some 'name' dj's into it's various little rooms. Although it's near Kings Cross I wouldn't try to walk from the station, get a taxi.
The daddy of London clubs, Fabric is still going despite hitting some financial difficulties. It's large and a little impersonal but every clubber should go to Fabric at least once. Personally I prefer their Friday line-ups to their Saturdays. Get there by 11pm if you want to avoid a hugemongous queue.
In terms of live music, I love the Barfly in Camden. Live bands almost every night of the week upstairs (bar and occasional indie discos downstairs). I've seen the Gossip, Editors and British Sea Power play there to name but a few. You can often pay on the door rather than having to book in advance (for the not-yet famous names).
Ok this post is getting stupid-long now which i didn't intend when i started. I'm just going to abruptly stop now.:-)

Perfect timing for this thread. Im heading to London for holiday in mid May. (when its slightly warmer again). Was tempted to see the Bowie exhibition. But yeah in terms music and clubs where would start seriously.

Last time I was over in london I spent half the day in at Rough Trade East. So much stuff I wanted to buy. (that was when the internet hadnt yet taken over the music industry totally then maybe just starting to so a few years back now)
Come out from the cold and into the setting sun. It's where it all began for me (not in Afrika), like it was out of control. Then after that life was sweet. So dream on into the pioneer skies of the fourteenth century and rise from the sunshine underground.

Skyscraper, thanks so much!
I actually know London quite well; i used to live there about 6 years ago. But things in 'the big city' change so fast. I was there in Turnmills yes, i went there a couple of times for NYE, and i had great nights there, some of which i can hardly remember....those where the days ;-) hence why i am so curious about the clubscene in London, because the best club is no more!

i LOVE Camden for the shopping and the bars, nice to hear thats still a good place to go to. I didnt know about Spitalfields Market, will def check that out.

Club-wise; Fabric it will be. I´ve been several times but my BF has never, and he´s even more into techno than i am so it´s def a must.

Will check out the other recommendations you gave me, it´s much appreciated!

Love from Amsterdam,

Jeanie

Hope you well Jeanie!

Fabric deffo a good choice, trouble is these days its rammed with tourists who are not clued up about the music. Here's the best place to have a look at whats going on...

Village Underground is a wicked venue, as is the Loft Film Studios and Union Street Car Park. Been hitting the Krankbrother parties and Jaded as of late, worth decent promoters. Heard good things about Love Fever, Half Baked & Secret Sundaze. Would avoid Fuse and Brick Lane.

Hey Rich!

Good to see you round here again.
Will never forget our clubbingtimes @ the end. Good days!

Thnx for the recommendations; we'll probably go to fabric as it's a good line up and my bf has never been, but the places your talking about seem worth checking out.

Nice one!
