Here's the one from the Pitchfork crew:

Pitchfork Further review here

http://pitchfork.com.../14359-further/

See what you guys think, I've found the reviews they do critical but pay respect where its due. Its not a bad one, thought I'd throw in the mix with the others...

But like what everyone's said...make of it what you will with reviews, it is just someone's opinion, especially when the person reviewing any album doesnt know much about the artist and where they come from. But having said that, I find it interesting on other peoples takes if they do know the artist's history etc.
Come out from the cold and into the setting sun. It's where it all began for me (not in Afrika), like it was out of control. Then after that life was sweet. So dream on into the pioneer skies of the fourteenth century and rise from the sunshine underground.

Although it seems I nitpicked it unfairly, I actually found the Pitchfork review refreshingly positive! The review got it's own thread here: http://www.thechemic...n-80-out-of-10/

In my books, Further is their best album, followed by Surrender.

I personally think that Pitchfork normally has pretty great reviews. You have to remember that it's not about defining what music is best or ranking albums against each other in the absolute realm: this site is devoted to forming recommendations for people to buy music with which they are not familiar. The purpose is, in part, to bring attention to good new releases that are relevant according to some specific criteria.

Pitchfork gave WATN a 3.8/10. They obviously suck.

Their Further review is refreshing, though. I'm glad to see that they haven't totally closed themselves in and are open-minded. They could've been prejudiced and gone into the album focusing on only the negative, the author acutally took the time to understand the album and realize that, no, the Chems aren't dead, like the rest of the media seems to be convinced of. Good to see something like this appear in Pitchfork.

But I don't think any review can ever beat the one for Daft Punk's Daft Club: http://pitchfork.com...2135-daft-club/

PS:
Did anyone see this one?

One of the best reviews of Further I've seen.

Sorry Whirly, you've caught me out again! That pitchfork thread was before my time....

Like how that Culture Bully review ended "still creating music that is in a class all unto itself" ...so so true. Thats why they're still around, cause they stay true to themselves as artists and are not too concerned about whats going on out there in the industry. They have their own zeitgeist Mother F*ckers!

Plus, I dont think you can compare their albums too much because all of them are quite different in sound yet its still recognisable as the Chemical Brothers. I found WATN was their darkest in a way, like they were trying to fight their own demons off. You could tell with the lyrics of the songs and even with the style and mood and then when Further came out that was like another chapter again like the light at the end of the tunnel....

(Unless Im reading in to it too much and thats what my life was like :???: )

(On a random note: I love that sample in the Glint mix 'I can see the light')

No need to apologize at all! I just didn't want your post of the Pitchfork review to go unnoticed, since there was previous discussion from before.

I have to agree with you on We Are The Night which is amongst my favorite albums of all time, period. It's cool We Are The Night speaks for your life experience. Looking back at the big picture, I can see the journey started off with a twisted leap of faith that had me teetering on the edge of confusion, insanity, absurdity, stark realization, and sheer unadulterated bliss. And the end feels almost like the gentle embrace of melancholic yet self affirming relief from the rest of the album. I will never forget a blurb I read about We Are The Night when it first came out, where the reviewer said this album unfolds as it should like all great, classic albums do. Not sure if it's a self fulfilling prophecy based on what I read or something that just occurred through experience, but this album revealed itself to me in many ways over the course of time. It means something much different personally now than it did when it first came out - hindsight being 20/20 n'all. Not sure if the album reflected the Chems own personal demons since that's something that can be interpreted I suppose, but it most certainly represented mine in a lot of ways.

The mc marsh review of Further comes several weeks after the event as usual but here goes...

Snow
What a beautiful soaring intro this is, really patient, tantalising build up.

Escape Velocity
Very simple but complex at the same time, lots of different sounds going on. Immense build-ups here, the third (I think) with sounds only the Chems are capable of creating! Keyboard fiddling ending reminds me of the intro to Baba O' Reily by The Who (sorry if someone has made that observation before). I'm still not sure whether I like this whole 'flanged guitar' sound also used on Burst Generator but it's certainly unique, as is the rest of the track.

Another World
One of my favourites on the album...devastating change from the 'crashing' sections to the slick 4/4 bits. I think someone on here didn't like the whole vocal thing on this track but I love the vocals and seemingly 'yearning' voice. Great when the two sequences are combined towards the end, I like the "boom boom" drum on top of the kickdrum.

Dissolve
Nice track, not sure if I actually like it but so far don't dislike it either. Real psychedelic Beatles-esque feel with the sitars n' all.

Video probably my favourite on the DVD as it happens, I love the painted backgrounds with 'Further girl' avoiding all the early 1900s top-hatted men and street entertainers, brings a smile to the face.

Horse Power
Not quite the acid-soaked monster in the live set but not far off! Some really cool sounds on this one, I love the "smashing wood" beats and the chugging "dum du dum dum" bass used in one of the several buildups.

I find myself fascinated with the wooden horse on this vid, how did they make it?? (I haven't seen the DVD "making of") It's like one of the fantastic creations from the original Clash of the Titans film - the vulture or the mechanical owl.

Swoon
I stick with my original view on this track - beautiful emotional song. I really dig the build-up and bass and beats once the track kicks in. A track that does sounds a bit like the other tracks that were mentioned but for me, Swoon has been executed with so much emotion and feeling that the comparisons aren't important.

K+D+B
Akin for me to someone bounding excitably and without a care in the world over open meadows and through forests. I love this track, it has a really nice air to it.

Someone called the video a bit dull but I find the flock of birds quite soothing, a bit like gazing into the fish tank in the dentist's waiting room.

Wonders of the Deep
Nice end to the album, I can't think of anything else to say lol.

The album really is quite something, a real flowing album, up there with Layo & Bushwacka's Night Works, the Avalanches Since I Left You and erm...Surrender. Something for a music fan and even hardcore Chems fans to bend their ears round. Almost as though Tom and Ed have been wanting to do something like this for a while, maybe chart positions and radio play have taken second place behind creating something unique and I admire them for their boldness.

Some more listening to do for me I think and definitely a few more DVD viewings in order but a very well executed package from the brothers..."music in high definition" as Metro put it - indeed.

Marsh, I forgot to let you know I enjoyed reading your review. I too get the feeling that Tom and Ed have been wanting to do something like this for a while.
