Woah! In my book, saying "The Private Psychdelic Reel" is "boring" is like some sort of sick oxymoron!!
The "Private Psychdelic Reel" and "boring" should not be uttered in the same breath!
Oh well, I guess there has to be one...

Point...
TPPR can simply not be described as boring. All of the subtle harmonic changes, and those which are not so subtle, the complex rhythmic crescendos, the brilliantly timed atmospheric sounds and clarinet excursions, and, of course, the decidedly clever use of filters and tweaking from the breakdown to the final chimes weave an intricate web which strikes and stimulates the mind.
Now, while it is quite clearly in poor taste to dislike these factors (although it is technically allowed... ;)), it is plainly sad to call it boring. Such a statement only displays a lack of intelligence, or thorough consideration, or honed listening skills.

Flash forward to about a year. I conduct this weird experiment of lucid dreaming in conjuction to outside media and how it alters dreamscapes. Meaning if I were to take the sounds of people having sex and make a tape of it, behind a few songs from the Beach Boys Pet Sounds album, then some that night I would be waiting for the day to fuck the shit out of you! I'm being serious here. My favorite stuff to do this with was Richard Pryor records and Chemical Brothers songs. So I leave Dig Your Own Hole on the winamp with exercpts from Richard Pryor's Wanted album. You know the one where he talks about having the heart attack and ending up in the wrong heaven. Well right at that moment I start hearing the opening salvo of TPPR. And in my convoluted dreamstate, I finally got it. Whatever it was, I got.
Do you have to develop an asinine experiment just to get the clarinet sounds and the weird touch tone phone on steroids ending? No, but TPPR is quite the challenging track. And one that I can see people not understanding after the first few times of spinning. Hell, I felt that the first time I played Surrender. (I have a funny story about that one, too!) But I bet that if you heard it live, it would be the "A-Ha!" moment for you. I haven't seen Tom and Ed live, but I want to see them play just to hear that one. I know that it's there end-of-show track, but after hearing it on Live in Paris, I just have to hear it live.
So to sum it all up, it's like the joke in "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" where the neighbor's kid saves Rick Moranis's daughter with open mouth resusitation and the nerdy kid asks where he learned that from and says "French Class!" and the nerdy kid doesn't get it.
Because he was French Kissing her X-D "I get it! French Class!"
You'll have to excuse me, I just quit smoking. :(

Quit smoking... I feel your discomfort!!
I have to say, that's a crazy ass experiment! Seriously... was this an experiment tried and true and documented by other people or did you make up the experiment by yourself?
I get what you mean about the "Ah-ha" moment. Especially in the live context. It happened to me when I heard Star Guitar live. I just wasn't feeling the song before, then not only heard it live, I literally "felt" it - and it was a mind blowing experience that changed my entire perspective of the tune.
As for Private Psychdelic Reel I got it right away but all the textures and melodies were sensory overload the first couple times. Not overload in a bad way, but it all didn't sink in at first. With every listen, I heard new things and noticed the different arrangements of all the textured melodies. It's always been one of those songs that is multi-dimensional to me...

its really long and really boring! i love all chems tracks except this one, its sooo uninteresting. Turn it off.
I agree with You! This track has in title PSYCHEDELIC word, but in fact this is no psychedlia in this! This is hard to explain, hmmm. It's has no good climate building. It's like they sit at the console and turnin on the channels one by one adding another track. this is just some sitar guitar with some brakbeat (maybe this poor breakbeat rhythm is to weak, and make it non psychedelic?). For me psychedelic tracks are: Dig Your Own Hole, Elektrobank, It Doesn't Matter, Don't Stop the Rock, Get Up On It Like This. I don't know what about this is, but good rhythm is the basic to be psychedelic but the other sounds must also be built up on the track in the special way.

Equinoxe and JUNKIE listen up............
One thing you have to consider is when this song is played live it really comes together as a mind blowing psychedelic track.
The first time i saw the chems i was so shocked at how good this track is live compared to the album. I love it when u thing the show is over then the kickstart this track again. The visuals for this tune are alot quality with the winking eyes and the picture of christ.

Err, what?
Eastern flutes and sitars are the STAPLE sounds of psycheldelia (2 words...The Beatles), and TPPR is loaded with them.
It Doesn't Matter = psychedelia?? Don't make me laugh!!

you lost all credibility for articulating psychedelic.
granted you may not like the track, but if you don't know what psychedelic is, then you can't say whether a track is psychedelic or not. Go listen to some 13th Floor Elevators to understand what actual psychedelic music is like.
