Early 90s This could get even worse, can anyone upload the videos for Haddaway, 2 Unlimited or the great Dr Alban!

HAHA nice topic Jeanie. When I work at the coffee shop and have to open the place, my co-worker and I usually put on a 90's hit radio station and I feel like this track was on there.

here's some math for you:

Black Man Rapping w/Attitude + Bright Piano Samples + Tambourine Samples + 12-bit Bullet Sample noise + pseudo-Aretha Franklin Vocals + Bad String Pads + MORE ELECTRIC SNARE DRUM= Early 90's Dance Music

...don't bug me until dance music get's sirens.

hahaha, I knew a mention of Pop Will Eat Itself would eventually lure sneakerbeater into the thread.

Don't forget EMF, kids. It's Unbelievable!

Holy shit!

i can't believe i use to listen to this stuff. Of course at the time, I pretty much had these on cassette. Jesus Jones, KLF, etc. I think my fave back then was 'Toms Diner' and 'The Power'

Cool 90's stuff, but now Bargain bin clearances!

Oh well. . . What the Hell!

^ I love that Snap song!

OK, here's some more. I liked these songs then and I still like them today... and now... Deeeeeeeeeelite!!!! Lady Miss Kier has such a cool voice. And the song Groove Is In The Heart reminds me of my first trip to NYC:

http://www.youtube.com/v/mKTCW4oxS6I

Since I'm feeling groovy, here's one by The Farm:

http://www.youtube.com/v/7_ws0FPoEKE

And this song, 'Fabulous' by Happyhead . This is fun. Personal anecdote - This was me n'stash's theme song during the brief (but fabulous) dating days prior to marrige, haha:

Anyone remember the band James? Man, they were good. Here's a great song called Sit Down:

Now for a bit of cheese.

Jesus Jones. This guy's hat in the video is thrilling. This song's definitely lost something over the years...

Soup Dragons, the one hit wonders!! And yeah, I still own this CD:

And for the young whipper snappers who might not know, the above song was a cover of the Stones:

Utah Saints! Aw man, *memories* of those danky loud industrial clubs...

http://www.youtube.com/v/rwDNxrjWFH4&feature=related

And this next song by this old techno band called Messiah... I couldn't find a link to the song they sampled This Mortal Coil's Song To The Siren from, but this one will do. It's called 20,000 Hardcore Members and it's rad! (20,000 hardcore members... That's gonna be you guys at Olympia)

James - are fantastic, and still going strong, just released a new album - wearejames.com. Heard them in session at the weekend, sounded great - some new stuff, as well as Laid - it's at www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/dermot/

And Utah Saints re-released Something Good (the one with the Kate Bush sample) recently as well!

Dang, just goes to show how out of touch I am. How embarrassing... I didn't know James were still at it! That's good! It's a shame they never broke big here in the States. Laid was their biggest album here and they sort of faded off the airwaves as time went on. So many great memories I have of that album and this thread prompted me to pull it off the shelf and bring it to work with me (I'm listening right now, haha) They also had that song beforehand, Born Of Frustration, which was used in a television ad a number of years ago. I didn't know who'd done that song when it first came out, but I heard it on the radio and the dj never said "And that was James "Born Of Frustration". I ended up calling the radio station over that one in search of who'd done it, and I ended up singing the song to the dj. Talk about embarrassing, hahaha.

FAO Jeanie: If you haven't heard James' "Laid", you need to drop what you're doing now and take a listen. I have a feeling you'd really like this album.

A song that will get stuck in your head for hours. HOURS!! It's a great song, though. I really liked Suzanne Vega's album 99.9 F Degrees. The song Blood Makes Noise is really good.

Speaking of early 90's chick appeal, anyone remember Liz Phair? Exile in Guyville... such a naughty explicit album. Check the song Flower. It unfolds in more ways than melody, heh. Enjoy:

Damn Whirly! Thanks for the nostalgia! Surprisingly, all these bands or groups have faded away but very few are around!

I remember in the early 90's, there was this radio station called MARS FM 103.1 and it played the very first rave, early acid, techno, as well as noticables as KLF, LA Style, etc! Swedish Egil

was in charge of the format and this started the electronic scene in small areas in L.A. The station only lasted around a year but I have tons of cassettes from the station with the earliest forms of this music. I'm going to see if I can convert them to CD.

another KLF cheese slice:

non-electronic 90's faves:

Veruca Salt - Seether

Belly - Feed The Tree

cant forget this one . . Radiohead - Creep

Whirls, you given us too much at once! it's like an overload of great cheese of our childhoods and adolescence and well just growing up 90s.

anywho, I just want to comment on Dee-Lite and groove is in the heart. I saw Towa Tei (the main producer) spin at fuji rock 05 and he played a great funk-house set througout....then he dropped groove is in the hert and it just went killer. 90s dance club moment on my part that night. Check out his youtube set vids for some funk house madness

Thanks for the linky Ryno, will check it out. I love this thread. I could sit here all day and post stuff and talk about stuff. Thank god for the rest of you, there aren't enough hours in my day to pull a stunt like that. ;)

And dude, inchemwetrust - MARSfm was fuckin' awesome!! I loved that station!! It was where I first heard The Orb and Orbital and a whole bunch of other stuff (some of which I already posted here already). Ahh... Little Fluffy Clouds... It was so refreshing because at the time that station was on the air, KROQ - which was *the* station I grew up with - slid into grunge territory and that just wasn't really my thing. Come to think of it, I think grunge was the downfall of MARSfm. Anyway - if you can convert all those tapes you have to CD, please pretty please let me know. I'd be forever grateful if you'd be willing to share!!

whirly!

I just found out that my brother has my tapes in a storage(he took care of my stuff when I moved years ago)but i'll let you know ASAP when I get them, probably over the weekend.

lets see . . MARS --> JAZZ -->GROOVE-->INDIE!

I think that's how the station went through the formats over the years. could be wrong on some some parts but yeah, MARS was music that was beyond anything I heard of. I can think of one name that might have killed the station: NIRVANA!

I could be here all day Whirls! Of all the people in the world, you out of a zillion would remember MARS . . and be a Chem fan :)
