Imagine how it would be, to be at the top making cash money. to travel all round the world and tell stories about all the young girls.

Problems with the Prodigy:

1) they set an exceptional bench mark with jilted generation. it became more than just an album really its an icon of it's time. trying to compete with that has got to be a headfuck for liam.

2) they def lost their focus after that - liam couldnt decide if he wanted to be dance or punk - or he wanted to mix the 2 and just didnt really deliver a satisfying whole

3) the whole image thing - i think sneaks hit it right on the head, so i wont pontificate any further

4) liams kind of lost touch with the underground - i think you can hear that in the new album. to me it doesnt sound exciting or fresh - just a bit - - hmm, stale.

all only opinions of course, but to me thats a fair summation.

see, i think the chems grew a bit more organically which has helped their enduring appeal - no sudden changes, big bold brash statements, just them creating really good music. and therin lies the difference.

mip 'plato' pio ;) :)

well actually i think i can :P ;-)

yes the chems are ace. yes they kick the prodigy's arse.

BUT they both got 'big' at about the same time. they both released albums very close to each other (didnt FOTL and DYOH come out the same wek or something???) and they both come from a dance background. it's interesting to compare how the 2 developed. well i think it is anyway. :)

Mip 'Plato' pio said "When the music of a society changes, the whole society will change." Aristotle, a contemporary of Mip' Plato' pio said "When music changes, there should be laws to govern the nature and the character of that music." Lenin said "The best and the quickest way to undermine a society is through it's music."

i think fotl and dyoh came out a week of each other. i vividly remember sneaking outta work to get my copy of dyoh the day it came out. i first heard it on a listening post in our local virgin store!!! ah back in the day!!!!

anyway i remeber when the chems were always considered the understudy of the prodigy, hell the chems were there support band a few times. there were the prod spearheading the wave of electronica music (i hate that american term!!). and the chems were tied under the same banner as them.

now look at things. who things have changed.

If prodge hadn't released TFOTL when DYOH came out, the Chems were going to be the biggest electronica band at that time. What would have happened with them at that point?? That's a nice thing to think about.

Anyhow, I think Whirly gave the best comment. If a band, especialy you're favourite band, gives you a head fuck, they have made a great album.

I also think Consumer made a good comment. AONO is made for headphones 8)

I know out here in the States, Firestarter got loads and loads of airplay - it felt like months beforehand. (probably because when I went to London in late 1996, there were Prodigy posters all over the tube stops and it seemed like every store I went into, Firestarter was being played.) I was also working at the record store, and WEA (the label) was really scambling to hype Fat of the Land because it was going to be the next big thing to put dance music on the map.

I also remember Madonna having something to do with the Prodigy... I'll have to look that up...

Anyway, there was hardly any hype or major promoting going on for Dig Your Own Hole that I can remember. I was in charge of visuals for my store and I hardly got any materials (maybe a bumper sticker and a poster flat) to use in promoting the new Chemical Brothers. Sure Block Rockin' Beats got some airplay but it was not a lot when you stacked it up next to the massive amounts of hype granted to the Prodigy.

I think a lot of people here really hit it on the head when they say that the Prodigy became very image conscious, like they were marketed to be the freaky bad guys of dance music. I also think that image did a lot to drag the music down as well - it was like, "look at us, we're bad ass, look at my freaky green hair and metal shit in my face, we're freaky and we can play that funky shit and smack your bitch up" and you have to wonder if this image was contrived by Liam's muppets so they wouldn't have to get a day job, or if it was all label marketing... Then there was the whole controversy surrounding the Smack My Bitch Up video which got a lot of press. I don't know, I think Fat of the Land was just overplayed and overhyped and after the songs were used in movie and game soundtracks ad nauseum, the television commercials, the "background" music in mtv news segments, etc. etc. - you could feel the burnout just hovering on the horizon. No doubt this took a toll on the band who had to live up to that hype. No wonder there was a 7 year hiatus - talk about getting your bearings! When you try to live up to that hype, that image, I think it would hinder your growth as a musician, don't you? I mean afterall, if you grow as a musician who wants to share their tunes which in turn connects with people, it's got to come from deep inside you.

And then there's the Chemical Brothers, just 2 normal looking guys who have very humble, passive stage personas in comparison to an act like Prodigy. I think the reason why they were able to grow as musicians (besides not taking a 7 year siesta) has a lot to do with their friendship and their overall love of music and wanting to do something that's self gratifying. Creating something without some manufactured image getting in the way of the thing that matters most.

Sorry, but did you mean not made for headphones? Sorry to confuse ppl but I actually meant it sounds better (to me) without headphones :). Only because the stuff that was annoying me seemed to be in the foreground on headphones, but through the speakers on my stereo they are in the background.

For me the Prodigy sound has always been (and still is): "these are the beats, this is the bass, here's the melody, now rock your head off".

mie....you are pretty close there from what i recall

okay guys...going from memory alone...no dates

in the US

I recall getting the BlockRockinBeats single early in my freshman year of college or sometime towards the begining. I then remember getting DYOH not so long after that. This was all in 96 i believe. I then remember getting FatOTL a good bit later an dit becoming a big thing in th US. This was in my second year of higher education. It seems to me that in the US, FOTL came out at least a half of a year if not a full year later than DYOH.

Madonna bought the lable that had signed the Prodigy if I am not mistaken...I am probaly mistaken though. I also recall her trying to get liam to produce one of her albums....maybe the one orbit produced? geezz...I am up on too much beer.......later

nailed it 100%

the prodigy has NEVER has a headphone alubm. Liam is not a composer of sound color. He is a composser of sound structure. His formulas are nver complex, only good. The sounds structures neve manage to create thrid dimensions, they just rock.

It's worth purchasing for Spitfire, girls, memphis bells and the track with the MJ sample. I'll wait till i've listened to it more to decide if this a decent album. I'm gutted there's no BGAT type of song on there :'(

Madonna was the boss of the label Maverick who signed Prodigy after Mute ditched them. Later Madonna asked Liam to produce her album "Music" which he (thank god!!!!!!!) refused. Liam said she might be a big star and she took them on her label but no way he was going to produce her album. Most of the album got produced by unknown french guy Mirwais.
