When I saw 'em in SF on October 8th, 1999, I head 'em speak. I was up in the absolute front, against the barricade, dead center of the stage. Right in front of the mixing desk... During the quiet lull right before TPPR started to build, I could hear the two of them talking to each other as they hunched over the mixer. Then immediately after the show when they were walking around the stage looking all gracious, they were saying *something* to the audience, but I couldn't make any of it out. They had raped my ears with those delicious fuzz-fuck squelches they were using in the Setting Sun-Chemical Beats transition around that time...
Personally, I like the way they do things. Other electronic bands, like Underworld, who actually have vocalists/frontmen - well, it's downright proper that they should talk to the audience. And I think Karl's stage banter is downright masterful if occasionally creepy (that dude can give you some strange, strange looks if he wants to...) However, with the knob-twiddling duos of the likes of the Chems and Orbital, it's best to go with no talk. Paul and Phil just halting the concert to say "'ello!" was not a good move IMO. Keep those beats pounding and make me forget everything but the overwhelming sound and light spectacle...
